Well just went ahead and sent my list in. So don't be surprised if Harry's next post in here is an announcement that he's cancelling the tournament because he's so dismayed by some of my picks! :D
Some of the films that just missed out - The Fugitive, Total Recall, In the Line of Fire, Tremors, Heavenly Creatures, Being John Malkovich etc plus some great films that may make it in the future but that I've only seen once so decided not to include them such as LA Confidential, Unforgiven and True Romance.

Just realised a massive omission from my list. Or two actually. Toy Story 1 + 2. Just I used my current top 100 list and just picked out the 90s films to compile my list. However I have Toy Story 3 on at the moment representing the whole trilogy and forgot to account for the first two.
Didn't include LA Confidential myself as I've only seen it the once and not sure how much of a real favourite it is yet. However it's a tremendous film and should be top 15 at least I would say, and deservedly so

Is it time to start naming and shaming people who haven't submitted their lists yet?
Mr Minio
07-01-13, 05:13 PM
The thing is that most English speakers are lazy and don't even find any need to take a step further and watch some films and pass the language barrier. I can't understand the grumbling about the need of reading subtitles. 98% films I watch have subtitles. Be it English language film with English or Polish subs, or another language film with English subs. I even watch some Polish films with English subtitles, because in some of them sound mixing is pretty lousy and dialogs are hardly audible. Argument saying you can't focus on what's going on the screen, because you have to read is ridiculous. Sadly, that problem also applies to Polish people, who mainly either tend to watch Polish films with (obviously) no subtitles or English films with lector. I know there's a plenty of English language MoFos right here that watch and enjoy foreign films, but it's the mainstream audience I am talking about in this post.
And there's nothing wrong with not having any foreign language films in your top lists. What's wrong is limiting yourself only to one-language flicks ignoring the vast amount of masterpieces from all over the world. Not necessary obscure arthouse.

I saw Holy Motors a couple months ago and I really liked it. It's not that I don't expect to like foreign films, and I think it's possible that I would like foreign films as a whole better than I would ever like American films, but American films are more accessible to me right now, and there are several mainstream ones that I still need to see (look at my movie lists to see how few movies I've seen relative to most of you). Holy Motors was the only foreign film that I specifically had a great desire to see, because I had heard a lot of great things about it, especially for a foreign film. I understandably hear more about American films here in America, so that creates more of a desire to see specific American films before I branch into foreign films.

There is nothing wrong with having foreign language films on your list. I was pointing out the fact that people are comparing their "superiority" by having more "high-class" films because they watch stuff that is not in English.

Like TUS points out, what is annoying is these people that act as if they are some how superior or more intelligent by having a more refined taste or one that goes against the norm - Mr Minio is cool, but I think other posters come across a bit like this and happen to rub some people the wrong way because of it.

People should watch whatever interests them and like whatever appeals to them. If that includes foreign language films, cool. If not, that's cool too.
For me, one of the biggest things that affects how much I enjoy a film is how well I connect with the characters and I simply find that easier when a movie is in my own language and easier still when the setting is close to home.

I think in certain cases this is true. With subtitles I think a lot gets lost in translation often. In a lot of films the development of characters is more reliant on how they say something rather than what they say, and paying attention to subtitles can often cause you to miss the body language/voice of the person, especially when there's a couple of lines of subtitles and you're not exactly sure what matches up. I can imagine comedy is much more effective in your own language too in certain cases.

Indeed. I was raised on subtitles but most people here are not used to subtitles so I guess it might be strange for them to read subtitles. Given the huge size of the US entertainment industry and the cost of reading subtitles most Americans rarely have any contact with the entertainment produced on the rest of the planet.
Argument saying you can't focus on what's going on the screen, because you have to read is ridiculous.
Indeed. It's like saying that paying attention to the spoken dialogue makes it hard to focus what's going on the screen.
Miss Vicky
07-01-13, 08:04 PM
Indeed. It's like saying that paying attention to the spoken dialogue makes it hard to focus what's going on the screen.
That's a BS analogy.
I shouldn't even have to explain why, but here goes anyway. When watching a film in your own language, you can watch the action on the screen with your eyes and listen to the dialogue with your ears, all the while being able to pick up on nuance, inflection, tone and facial expressions simultaneously. Whereas watching the action and reading the subtitles at the same time requires your eyes to multi-task. It also means that you may very well be missing out on facial expression, nuance, tone and inflection - all key elements to communication. And that's all assuming that the subtitles are providing you with an accurate translation.
What Vicky's saying isn't just right--it's obvious. I wouldn't say it's hard to focus on the screen, but it's certainly harder, because all attention is finite. This has nothing to do with one's level of sophistication; it's a simple cognitive reality.
Loads of BS floating around lately.

I usually watch a good foreign film twice because of subtitles; naturally, there are things I miss during the first viewing because I'm looking at the subtitles.

Never mind subtitles, dubbing is what gets on my nerves. At least with subtitles on, you can still hear the original voice of the actor and the original line of the script. Dubbing is like a crime.
Can you imagine, for instance, Samuel L. Jackson's character from Pulp Fiction shouting "English motherf*cker, do you speak it" in another language? One should simply not be allowed to erase Sam Jackson's voice. Or any other actor's. They should just stop doing it, honestly.

Sometimes for a bigger budget foreign film they will use the actual actors to voice the dubbing. Recently watched "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and I'm sure they used some if not all the actual actors. Definitely Michelle Yoah and Chow Yun Phat. Probably not for all the minor characters though.
Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan dubbed their own films too I think.

Oh I agree. I absolutely will not watch a non-English language film that has been dubbed in English. I find that whole sounds-not-matching- movements thing immensely distracting. I've had that problem too when trying to watch streamed films or films on television where the voice track is out of sync with what's going on on the screen. I end up just turning it off entirely.

Also, I think it takes to much time to make these threads as well. A total of over 5 months to get the list and it will take at least another month for Harry Lime to post the compilation.
Harry Lime
07-02-13, 03:32 AM
This is how we do things around here. It's also going to take a lot longer than a month to post the entire list. This isn't some quick, random tournament; it's our list representing the community and its film tastes and will be added to the Lists section when it's all done.
Sure we could probably go through a whole bunch of these in the same time frame, but that would diminish the appeal and not allow people the proper time to watch and rewatch and contemplate the movies they may want to add. These lists value focus and patience, something I believe is in short supply these days. I hope that whomever does the next one follows the same protocol.
Harry Lime
07-02-13, 03:34 AM
Oh, and with less than 30 minutes to go it's safe to say we got 53 lists in total, Deadite adding the final one. Great stuff. Mind you if someone does get one submitted in the next half hour it will still count.

I strongly second that. I don't want to fly through this list just to get to an 80's list that is rushed and hurried as well. I like the anticipation of having one movie posted a day or two posted every other day. It gives me something to look forward to on the forum.
Plus, I would find it incredibly frustrating wanting to talk about movie #77 but everyone's already talking about movie #55 because the list is going up so fast.

Bored of 'foreign' films vs. 'American' films nonsense. Don't forget about British, Irish, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and multi-national films. (And any other non-American English-speaking country I've just offended by leaving off that list...)
I'm keen to see the countdown but I don't think it should be rushed out for the sake of moving on to the next thing. People have taken the time to consider their lists, they should also get the chance to discuss the films and watch the ones they might not have seen. Anyone really impatient to know what the top ten will be can just ask SC. Or Psychic Isaac.

It's Lime's call, but I think it's reasonable for it to take over a month. You could still do 3-4 a day for the first 90 and 2 a day for the top ten and it'd be over in a month and a half.

Wouldn't having more diverse lists mean it will be easier to reach 100 films? At 54 lists it won't be a problem hitting 100, there's way more than that (I think) but I'll give a total number of movies voted for at the end.

What I like about the 90s is the fact that the oscars got it pretty decently for the most part. At least 8 of the 10 best picture winners are shoo-ins.
Yeah. I mean, I could quibble with 1994, but they were in an untenable position there.

With Gump, Shawshank, and Pulp Fiction it was a tough call. Though I don't like Pulp, that was pretty much everyone's favorite.

I saw a clip of the cat scene and it made me sick. I know the director claims that the cat wasn't injured and that he adopted it afterward, but I don't care. The cat was clearly frightened and stressed from being thrashed about. I'm not watching the rest.

The cat was clearly frightened and stressed from being thrashed about. I'm not watching the rest. Many actors get frightened or stressed on the stage. Don't watch movies with them, then! Just a little tip for you, if you're sensitive for animal cruelty, don't watch Cannibal Holocaust, because if this scene in Satantango made you sick, CH would make you, well... even sicker.

Actors are there by choice, animals are not.
Exactly. Actors have a choice. Actors also have some understanding of what is going on and why it's happening. Animals do not.
And I'm well aware of the atrocious cruelty suffered by animals in the name of entertainment for Cannibal Holocaust which is why I have not watched it and never will. But just because the cruelty in CH is far worse than that in Satantango does not make it excusable in either.
ETA: I should also add that just because there was no visible physical injury to the cat, does not mean that it did not suffer pain while being thrashed around.
Mr Minio

Call me a bastard, but if such a mild animal cruelty as seen in Satantango would help a director to create a masterpiece such as this movie, he has my yes. I didn't care for animals in HC neither. I am a terrible person, I know.
EDIT: Oh, and don't even start the "but this scene was meaningless and without it the movie wouldn't be significally worse" talk. You don't know director's view and intentions and if he said the cat didn't get hurt I believe him.

I haven't seen Satantango yet, but I will comment on Cannibal Holocaust. It's still a good movie. I don't guess it was needed, but it doesn't hurt the quality of the movie in my eyes.

You said it, not me.

Since it's the contest of popularity and quantity and not quality, I'd say Satantango won't even be in the first 100.
Indeed. I haven't included it into my top 25 of the 1990's since I only watched it recently.

Well, in one of your favorite films ever, Gladiator, there have been some minor animal cruelty accidents too, I guess. These horses and tigers must have been stressed and frightened of Russell Crowe and his big muscles!

Cite your sources. Also an accident is quite different from deliberate abuse.

Anyway, Vicky would certainly hate Satantango, with or without animal cruelty.

I saw a clip of the cat scene and it made me sick.
Then explain your third favorite movie

Even though he's smiling. He isn't happy.
I heard director Brad Bird adopted him too when Peter O'Toole wouldn't.

Apocalypse Now features the slaughter of a water buffalo. Does that make it scandalous?
I consider myself an animal lover. I've known cats and dogs all my life and they've been in my family for as long as I can remember and I always had a very good relationships with all the pets.
I personally don't mind that kind of scenes. It's just part of reality. Animals can handle a lot by the way. That scene in Satantango won't hurt the cat emotionally at all, trust me. I think you're going a little too far here in saying that this is abuse. It's not, in my opinion.
It's another thing when a police officer is killing a perfectly healthy domestic dog for no reason, of course...
Then again I have to say I'm pretty ambiguous in my principles. Strangely enough, I don't really mind certain asian cultures eating dogs, for instance. I consider it part of a very long tradition. I am a huge carnivore myself and love all kind of meats! I never really think about the animals in that kind of situations.
I'm just not a guy with very firm and consistent morals, I guess. At least, not when it comes down to animals. Maybe these morals will grow on me as time goes by or maybe they won't...
