I'm sure this topic has been done before, but it is such a comprehensive study that it should be brought back to the top every so often. Besides, I haven't engaged in it yet.
1) Billy Bob Thornton (never overstated, and always becomes a genuinely different character with each film-- which cannot be said for any other big name actor)
2) Al Pacino (his distinguished voice and mannerisms perfectly compliment his uncanny ability. Portrays as real a character as has ever existed)
3) Martin Landau (flawless)
4) Edward Norton (best of the younger generation-- by far. Particularly exceeds in those dual roles.)
5) Judi Dench (the female equivalent of Landau)
6) Anthony Hopkins (his great ability has recently been obscured by his indiscriminate acting roles)
7) Robert De Niro (see above)
8) Christopher Guest (don't laugh. He is the single greatest underrated talent in the industry-- by far. That includes acting
and directing.
9) William Macy (good, very good)
10) Willem Defoe (has played everyone from Jesus Christ to the Green Goblin)
