Initially, I thought it was going to be primarily about the bonding process between Utah and Pappas, but the story eventually turns out to be a cat and mouse between Utah and Bodhi where the mouse gets the upper hand.

And like most great action films, these scenes manage to layer the action with character development.

Other characters tend to fall by the wayside as a result, whether it's Busey's appropriately bug-eyed fed or Petty's sharp-tongued love interest, but the film wouldn't be what it is without them.

I'm not sure how many more times in the future I'd care to watch a montage of Keanu Reeves learning how to surf thanks to Lori Petty's teaching, though.

Point Break is a film that really does come across as goofy and corny at points, but I think it's done very much on purpose.
