Beyond the Hills

Beyond The Hills [Dupa dealuri] (2012) - Cristian Mungiu -

Romanian drama about two former young lesbian lovers that are reunited after parting but whilst one wants to rekindle their relationship the other has since found God to fill the void their parting created.

This is a very slow moving film that probably won't find a very large audience which is a shame as imo it is actually very much worth a view as long as you don't mind a film that just lobs along at it's own sweet pace. Considering the lack of experience in most of the cast the acting is remarkably solid, the two young leads Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur really belying the fact that this is a first cinematic outing for both. Proceedings do dip a little around the halfway point but it's not for long and not only did the film manage to draw me in successfully it also managed to keep me invested in proceedings.

I've always given Four Months, Three Weeks & Two Days by the same director a wide berth despite reasonable ratings because of the subject matter but after watching this I'll surely give it a try should the opportunity arise.
