Team America: World Police

Team America: World Police (2004) - Trey Parker -

Animated comedy that also incorporates musical numbers which satirises America's self-assigned role as protector of the Western world.

The satire is quite cutting and pretty much on the mark when concerning the actions of America in foreign locations and the sometimes seeming lack of concern or regard for any aftermath of those actions. It also presents a rather humourous, albeit stereotypical in some regards, portrayal of former Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Sadly though the film also then branches out and satirises the Hollywood Actors Guild and for me that just felt cheap and uninspired.

The musical numbers really didn't do much for me and the humour was extremely hit and miss, but then I'm really not a fan of the base style of humour where profanities or obscenities often replace wit and guile. That's not to say there aren't moments that brought a smile to my face just that they were too few and far between. Some of the humour felt laboured too, what may be somewhat amusing the first time isn't necessarily so on repetition.

I give this credit for actually being brave enough to present America in the light it does and I have to say the puppetry was quite exceptional in places and good overall. Sadly though it's a film that stands or falls primarily on it's humour and though for me it started well and tried hard it ultimately ended up down on one knee, unable to push itself back upright.
