From the very start of the film--which literally begins with Susan sprinting away from an event she was attending with Brown--it seems as if Susan is trying to get Brown to get rid of her, whatever that means.

Leo Diamond (Cornel Wilde) is a righteous man who's frustrated that his efforts are failing to bring down a notorious crime boss, Mr Brown (Richard Conte).
