14th-century Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his young novice arrive at a conference to find that several monks have been murdered under mysterious circumstances. I must confess to having never read Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, but I'd imagine it sneaks in a little more theology than this adaptation does - take away this movie's fascinating setting (a 14th century Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy) and it would conform to any number of mystery films ....
