Iconic is probably right for that list above. But they're not the best..No gangster film list is complete without some Japanese 60s Yakuza films like:

Branded to Kill
Youth of the Beast
Tokyo Drifter
A Colt is my Passport

Also Melville's films have elements of gangster in them. Le Samourai is one of the coolest films ever made

Definitely need some Hong Kong gangster movies represented, how about Election?
