it was Rashomon style in a trial.
the whole movie the squad was angry at the leader for convincing them to parachute from the plane because they couldn't clear the mountain pass. they thought he did it to lighten the plane load
later the leader and one other guy were able to fly the plane to safety and avoid the grueling hike out of the wilderness.
the twist was the leader did it to save the last squad member who had a phobia and couldn't jump
