Verhoeven keeps a keen eye on elumanating classical hollywood, but with a more over the top erotic manner. In a sense he's being contradictory of himself. Seeing as Classical Hollywood filmmaking showed very little but were able to create sexual charage atmosphere. While Verhoeven shows all and leaves little to nothing to be imagened. That show all attitude works beautifully though for creating a vunrability in the naked-ness therefore in leave little to be imagened he is able to make suspence out of sensual sequences and images.

Vehoeven can be very satirical in his films since moving to America. This time the contsruction of a genre is were the satire can be found. For one Verhoeven seems set on confusing the protagonist , the plot and the audience. Giving info to you and not to Douglas or vis-virsa. The rules of the detetive genre are therefore broken and what's even more vivid and weird is that Veroeven chooses to stay away from most point of view shots which takes you even more away from the detective genre. What I think is that Verhoeven is going against better judgement, but essentially in doing so he made one of the greatest erotic pulp nior's and what might be the first full blood American gialio.

He's also less concerned with genre cliches (which is a good thing) and genre rules or situations and seems to be inflatuated on the appeal of the genre. Think for example of Vertigo or Laura. The way they use the lead actresses. They become almost the main character of the piece even though you are almost always with the main characters Jimmy Stewart and Dana Andrews.

Verhoeven is working extra hard to get your guard down at all times. He's almost saying look Stone's the killer shes the killer but in strengthing this he makes you think that it's almost to simple for her to be the killer in this murder mystery. That's why the plotline is always working on a very simple and certain line create distractions, pauses and to get your guard down so that the ending will have a punch to it. I'm not so certain Verhoeven succeeds in this. Same thing goes with the fact that it's a highly rich murder mystery really without the who done it. That is part of the satire. The way Verhoeven wants you to say who else could it be ? and why ? , it simpley has to be her. Starting off it works as a murder mystery but it fastly becomes a film more about creating a mood and tones and playing with a genre.
