Ways into Film Producing

Tools

Recently ive been thinking a lot about producing my own movie based on a experience of a family in Kansas (Drug Related, but so much more than that). However I wouldn't know how to begin or develop this idea.

Ive taken a lot of inspiration from masterpieces such as trainspotting, Requiem for a dream, Goodfellas, Reservoir dogs and would love to incorporate these directors shots into my own film and change them to make my own.

So i guess im asking if anyone has any good ways to start making a headway into the world of Film producing. And any creative ideas on how to present this film idea which i have would be much appreciated

Thanks

The overwhelming opinion I hear from everyone in the industry at all, offered to everyone who asks something like this, is simply: make movies. Even if they're bad at first. Just starting making things and make sure you get better each time.

I know of some that have gained more notoriety than success that were shot with available lighting, actors wearing their own clothes and such. I've wanted to shoot my own movie(s) for a very long time, what's stopped me though, was resources. Money. As an artist, I love the fact that movies involve every discipline in art that you can think of. And when you're going alone as a maverick filmmaker, and you don't have the money, you have to go "artsy" with it, I often find, especially with short films. There's a guy named Michael Bilinski, who also lives in Philadelphia, and he's made Amateur Porn Star Killer , among other movies that have gained a lot of notoriety and I've met him a couple of times and we've had some exchanges, in the past. Very enthusiastic about entertainment in general, but his focus has been increasingly geared towards his music label, Pagan Music, I believe they're called. I forget, right now, but I understand he's got a lot of talent signed on.

When it comes to making movies, Mike and company own their own cameras, for one thing, which is a big help. It's been a while since we talked, but he did invite me, knowing me to be an artist, to help his Art Director for some zombie movie he did and my schedule just wouldn't allow for it, unfortunately. But they made use of talent from the Adult Film Industry, who wanted a chance to do straight movies. Unfortunately, as I understood it, these actors don't want pages, they ad-lib their lines and it's just not my idea of shooting movies, anyway. Then again, Mike's producing movies and I'm ... not ... so. I also would not be comfortable without at least renting proper lighting, which I'm sure they don't use. I don't know why, but I've kept the dream alive of making movies of my own and maybe someday I'll get to. I just can't see how I can get around to it without good resources, unless I'm doing documentaries.

There's an Independent Filmmaker site, by Jason Brubaker called Filmmaking Stuff. I'm too new here to be able to post a link, yet. I've given it a once over, it seems fairly straightforward. But he has a checklist, for example, that might provide some Food for Thought ... a starting point, perhaps.
