Best Ensemble Cast

Hi all.

I was watching the new JFK DVD that will hit shelves in a couple of weeks and I was amazed, as I always am, about the group of talent that came together for that film. So, it made me think of other films with great ensemble casts like Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You and even Magnolia.

I was also watching Outbreak for the first time in ages. Look at this cast and count the Oscar winners...

Of course, even really bad movies can have some Oscar winners. Look at Last Action Hero. It had Joan Plowright, Mercedes Ruehl, Anthony Quinn, Art Carney and F. Murray Abraham (all Oscar winners) in it, as well as Ian McKellen, who was later nominated for his portrayal of James Whale in Gods and Monsters.

Well, it's my belief that despite the great ensemble casts that appear from time to time in all sorts of movies (a lot of them Oscar winners, like you say), I'm sure none of them got their Oscars or their fame from these roles!

Usually, it's my experience that if there is a great ensemble cast, then it's usually to try to make up for the flaws in the story.

Still, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest had a great ensemble cast, and it launched almost all of the actors into stardom:
-Jack Nicholson
-that guy from Back to the Future
-the guy who plays Billy...I can't remember their names without checking the credits, but it's one hell of a movie!

I think that It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World had a great ensemble cast.

I seem to remember the Thin Red Line having some big names...

And there's that film where the President has a stroke and his secret service agents find a double. A lot of cameos. Sigourney Weaver is the President's wife, but the name of the main actor escapes me.

LOL Ollie It was Michael Douglas, I'm pretty sure of it...the movie was called Dave.

That's the film.

But it wasn't Michael Douglas. AARRGGHH! I hate it when something's on the tip of my tongue!

Kevin Kline was the main actor in Dave.

What about "Goodfellas" and "Casino?" They both had killer casts too.

What about the teen-horro flicks? Scream had a few good ones in, if I remember?

THAT'S RIGHT!!! KEVIN KLINE!!!!! How could I forget that?! I'm wondering how Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas got mixed up in my head!! DOH!

Speaking of Douglas, has anyone seen "War of the Roses"? Really hillarious!

War of the Roses - I love that film. Some great pranks - alarmingly vicious though.

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner (who, incidentally, has one of the sexiest voices in the world, along with Kirstie Allie) were also great in Jewel of the Nile and Romancing the Stone.

I figured you got Douglas and Line confused because Douglas also played the President in a comedy in the '90s (The American President, which was less of a comedy than Dave, and not as good.)

But that's just a theory.

American President is the one where they spent most of their time slamming the Republican party. It was not nearly as good or funny as Dave.

Kevin Kline has been in a lot of great movies, IMO.

My all time favourite presidential movie is Bullworth...ahh brings back memories

I love it in The American President when he's all cocky and tries to buy flowers over the phone. His credit? "Well this is the President of the United States. Hello? Hello??"

Kevin Kline was the star of that film—(DAVE) ;^)

Ensemble? Think British! Think the Monty Python films, think GREGORY'S GIRL, think A FISH CALLED WANDA, think the Carry On films...

Think Irish! Think MY LEFT FOOT, think THE COMMITMENTS, think THE GENERAL...

and think Dennis Leary for his help with this posting and this frenetic schtick. Gotta love him!
