I really loved La Haine and the Prophet but Mesrine is really my kind og guy.

Here's one that slipped my radar - Claude Lelouche's modernized version of
Les Miserables ( totaly diiferent, a WW II slant ) with Jean Paul Belmondo.

Martyrs
High tension
Inside
Irriversible
The ordeal
Doberman

The only one not mentioned so far (I think) is Day for Night (La Nuit Américaine). But I'll mention again (because they're great):

Les Quatre Cents Coups
Orphée
Buffet Froid

I was subjected to many an arthouse french film in my media study days, so took a while for me to warm up to one. LOL

Top picks on equal footing but from very different genres:

I Love Movies! That's all
WOOOW, where to begin :P I'm Belgian, born in a french-speaking family, so I grew up watching a lot of french films. There are sooo many good ones, its impossible to name them all.

A small list of all time favorites would be:

Asterix et Obelix - Mission Cleopatre
Le Grand Blue
Les Visiteurs
Le Gendarme
Le petit baigneur
Bienvenue Chez les Ch'ties

But really, the entire Gendarme franchise, Taxi franchise, every single Louis De Funes movie, Les Bronzés franchise,... The french are the masters of humor, in my opinion.
Any movie with Jean Reno, Gerard Depardieu, Christian Clavier, Danny Boon, Louis de Funes, Thierry Lhermitte or Jean-Paul Belmondo are great and fun to watch!

Edit: Damn! I almost forgot to include "Le FabuleuxDestin d'Amélie Poulain"

Mississippi Mermaid
Cyrano de Bergerac
BON VOYAGE......hi guys these movies are my favorite.

Some of my favorites are:

La Haine (1995,Mathieu Kassovitz)
A Prophet (2009,Jacques Audiard)
Leon: The Professional (1994,Luc Besson)
Delicatessen (1991,Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003,Sylvain Chomet)

Oh and I still need to see "Joyeux Noel" and "La Femme Nikita". Those would most likely make my list.

I prefer '...contre caeser' myself.
