Chappie doesn't like the real world
I highly recommend Schultze Gets the Blues. It's sweet, charming, a little sad, and really funny in places. I don't hear people talk about this one much, but it's really worth a watch.

Also, if you haven't seen My Life as a Dog, that's a must see too. What I said about the above movie applies to this one too.

I don't think I've seen any outside of the already mentioned - but I would really appreciate some recomendations based on my taste.

In '56 Piaf sang exactly what
nearly happened à l'Hôtel du Nord.

On les a trouvés se tenant par la main
We found them [lying], holding hands,

Les yeux refermés vers d'autres matins
their eyes closed, seeing other mornings

Remplis de soleil; on les a couchés
filled with sunlight; they took them to rest

Unis et tranquilles dans un lit creusé
quietly, together, into their last bed

Au coeur de la ville et je me rappelle
at the heart of the city, and I remember

Avoir refermé dans le petit jour
closing their door as the day was dawning

La chambre d'hôtel des amants d'un jour
a hotel room for the star-crossed lovers' end

I'm surprised the original post didn't mention Akira Kurosawa as a great Japanese director.

Most of the ones I could think of at short notice have already been mentioned - Delicatessen and Man Bites Dog are particular favourites. Has anyone mentioned the Spanish movie Intacto? Above average thriller, with one fantastic scene in particular that's one of my favourite moments in cinema.
