Monsieur Spade

Has anyone watched the new neo-noir Sam Spade series, Monsieur Spade? Clive Owen plays Spade and, although he's no Humphrey Bogart, he might bring it off. Hopefully with male writers and a male director it'll be more hard boiled, and not so feelings oriented...

We plan to watch the first couple of eps this evening.

Heh, heh. Well it doesn't look like many have watched this series, perhaps because it's on AMC.

We finished it up last night. It's a first rate neo-noir series focusing on D. Hammett's famous shamus, Sam Spade, starring Clive Owen. I was pleased at how good this production was.

It takes place in a small French town in 1962 where Spade has retired, having left San Francisco. Natually he's drawn into a local murder and mystery, which he decides to investigate. It's a pretty good plot, and besides going a little hinkey in the 6th episode, the story is well designed.

But it is Owen's portrayal of Spade, along with very noir-like dialogue and photography that make the show first rate. Owen even faintly resembles Bogart, although his dialogue delivery is not as fast paced.

Doc's rating: 8/10
