Rate The Last Movie You Saw

Watched "Diana" earlier. Very disappointing. Everything about the film feels wrong, from the storyline and cast to the feel for the movie itself. It is very slow going and generally discouraging.

4/10

American Hustle

I should probably try to explain this one. First of all, I'm a real sucker for movies that at least partially take place during the 70's or 80's, and have a great classic rock/disco soundtrack. Movies like Goodfellas, Casino, Boogie Nights, Wonderland, Saturday Night Fever, Forrest Gump, Summer of Sam, and Almost Famous are all favorites of mine. I guess it's a nostalgia thing for me; I just love those times, and the music. The second thing I loved about this movie was the cast; Bale, Adams, Cooper, Lawrence, and Renner are all outstanding. These are 5 actors who are all already well accomplished, and still have long, bright futures. Years from now, this cast may look even better. I also liked all of the characters these actors played. Not only that, but throw in 5 minutes from Robert De'Niro that remind you why he's one of the greatest actors who ever lived. *Now, the strange thing about this viewing for me, is that after about 35 minutes, I was ready to shut this movie off. I give credit here to this forum; since I've been a member here, I try to watch every movie in it's entirety. It's the only way that I can later give a movie a fair rating or opinion, during a discussion. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but after about 35 minutes, this movie suddenly and unexpectedly, started to blow me away. I've never before had such an extreme change of heart while watching a movie. It's like someone snapped their fingers, and everything changed for me. The third thing I loved about this movie, and the reason it became special for me, is also the most unlikely reason-the emotion. I did not expect any emotion at all from this movie because I didn't hear of anyone else getting affected like that. This is another credit to this forum. I used to be just a guy who watched a lot of movies, and wanted to be entertained. Now, I try to just let myself go into the experience. At one point, I completely broke down in tears. I don't know if this film aimed for that, or if it was just me. My wife loved the movie too, but she was looking at me laughing her ass off. I think this is because, while I enjoyed the story, my main fascination with the movie was the different dynamics of all the relationships. This aspect was very effective for me. I wouldn't necessarily say that American Hustle is a great movie; I think in great movies, there are no wasted scenes. I wouldn't even be sure that anyone I recommended it to would enjoy it. It's just the type of movie that I personally enjoy, and one that unexpectedly affected me emotionally. I was so confident that The Wolf of Wall Street would forever be my favorite movie from 2013. Now, I am not so sure.

Yeah, American Hustle is a great flick. I also really liked it. It currently ranks as my 4th favorite film of 2013.

Glad you liked it!

When I saw the first trailer, which basically just showed the style of the film while playing Zeppelin's Good Times, Bad Times, I was beyond exited to see this movie. When the more conventional trailer came out, my enthusiasm completely disappeared. This movie was a roller coaster for me before I saw it, and while I watched it.

I saw American Hustle in theaters, back when it was considered a front-runner for Best Picture. Like you said, it gets off to a really slow start. Eventually I did find myself engaged in the story and the characters, but I was still pretty underwhelmed by it. For me, it was probably a victim of hype, since I went in with sky-high expectations. I still think it's a good movie with some great performances, just nothing spectacular. I'm happy to hear that you had such a positive reaction to it, though. A lot of people said it was David O. Russell doing a Scorsese impersonation, so since your such a big fan of Scorsese, it's probably not surprising that you loved it.

I think Boogie Nights is closer to being a Scorsese type movie; my hope was that this movie would be something like that, but it turned out differently for me. This one was sappier than those types of movies to me, but it sucked me in. So, it wasn't what I hoped it would be, but it was something else that worked.

The Gold Rush (1925)

Although I've only seen a handful of Chaplin's films (most notably, The Great Dictator), I'd never seen this picture, only clips of two classic bits in the film: the scene where The Lone Prospector aka The Tramp and his friend Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain) are starving in a frozen cabin and The Prospector makes a boiled boot for them to eat; a dreaming Prospector entertains lady friends by sticking forks into two small loaves of bread and makes them dance (a bit done over-and-over in films in TV throughout the years and supposedly done first by silent film star, Fatty Arbuckle). Of the ones I've seen, Chaplin does it best. But there are other great moments throughout.

My particular favorite is where our hero dances with a saloon girl and his pants start to fall. He hikes them up with his cane while dancing, sees his chance and ties a bit of rope around himself as a belt, with the rope's other end attached to a large dog who gets in the way while they dance, and said dog sees a cat...well, you get the picture.

The whole film is infused with Chaplin's trademark sweetness. If you like silent films at all or slapstick in general, see this film. Great, classic stuff.

300:Rise of an Empire

First I want to say,I liked first 300 movie...It was ok,nothing fantastic just simple action, good effects a lot of blood and epic speeches.300 is 8/10 for me,I didn't ask for epic deep story or wonderful acting when I went to watch 300,I accepted movie for what it was,and it is a lot better then other actions. Now 300:Rise of an Empire is different and same...They used same formula but this movie had better story, better character development and battles were on the sea so that was different.Good main villain, good back story for characters, and one scene I find very funny ...I mean go into this movie with open mind and wanting action that is all you need for this...I also need to say one thing, how ignorant people can be when they go around talking this war and this battles never happen?Do they teach history in USA?(no offense)...I mean ofc they added a lot for the movie but that dosent mean this never happen LOL...People say "this never happened it is based on comic" omg...So if I make ww2 comic that means it never happened?I really like to study history that is why I'm talking about this.

Verdict: 8/10(same as original but different..if that makes sense.)

A stellar example of why boys should never be left unattended. Boys *shakes head*.

I wasn't sure if I'd buy this movie, but now I have, and it's all because of your review, Cricket, so, IT BETTER BE GOOD. I trust your opinions right now.

I loved the movie, but it probably isn't your type of movie SC.
Don't say that....

I saw that you have it. After I watch it once, we should do a commentary.

Yeah, of all the David O. Russell movies I've seen, I've loved them all. The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, I Heart Huckabees....
