Sunsplash 2002, thus honored at the VSDA show, will be held Aug. 10-12 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The 15th annual event will once again feature a full schedule of seminars and workshops, but the focus will be on social activities conducive to networking.

“The purpose is to get regional retailers together at one location, to go over marketing ideas and industry trends and also just to have fun with friends and family,” said Dave Batten, president of the Carolinas Chapter, which organizes Sunsplash.

• Sunsplash 2002 opens Saturday, Aug. 10, with two big social events. Attendees can take their pick of a golf tournament sponsored by Universal Studios Home Video and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, or a deep-sea fishing cruise sponsored by Rentrak Corp.

That evening, MGM Home Entertainment sponsors a “Southern Pig Pickin’” barbecue.

• The schedule for Sunday, Aug. 11, begins with a breakfast sponsored by Sun Ergoline, followed by a trio of workshops. Ingram Entertainment’s Billy Crystal will present the latest results from the VSDA’s benchmarking study at 9 a.m.; at 10:15 a.m., retailers can attend seminars on employee hiring or tanning. During the tanning seminar, Sun Ergoline will give away a Sundash Tanning Bed valued at $2,995.

That night, dinner will be served at the Myrtle Waves water park. Sunsplash attendees get in for free, courtesy of Warner Home Video, New Line Home Entertainment and HBO Home Video.

• On Monday, Aug. 12, Paramount Home Entertainment sponsors a breakfast presentation. The exhibit hall opens at 10 a.m. and will feature more than 50 exhibitors, from studios to tanning bed providers. Lunch will be served on the show floor.

In the afternoon come two more popular social events: the Spikers’ Classic beach volleyball tournament, this year sponsored by Ingram and Millrock, and the Kids’ Olympics.

“You’ve got to have some fun in this business,” said Batten, who was named rookie chapter president of the year at the VSDA convention. “Sunsplash keeps you updated on where the industry is headed, and what’s new and improved in the marketplace, in a social setting.”

Networking, Batten said, is key.

“If everybody’s doing something that works, it’s a good time to find out about it and maybe try it in your own store,” he said.

Sunsplash 2002 will once again be held at the Kingston Plantation, a resort just north of Myrtle Beach. Registration is $50 for VSDA members and $75 for nonmembers. Rooms are still available and include the $99 villas (for VSDA members only).
