The MoFo Top 100 of the 1970s: Countdown

The Wrestler has never been called cliche
I wouldn't be too sure about that.

and is generally regarded by film fans as one of the best movies of the last decade.
Very wrong film fans.

Someone explain to me how these movies are that different.
It's simple, I'd much rather watch Rocky again than The Wrester. Granted it means I have to miss out on nude Marisa Tomei and 8-Bit wrestling games, but still.

Of course, the real reason is one is directed by Darren Aronofsky while the other is completely associated with Sly Stallone. So, while wrong, you can see their point.

Out of that lot, all I had was Get Carter in 14th.
Yep, I had it too. My #12 pick. I also had Rollerball at #11.

Sleeper and Wake in Fright were two of mine. Almost voted for Stroszek, as well. So close.

Anyway, here's my list, still-to-come films eliminated:

5. Play It Again, Sam
8. Love and Death
12. Alice in the Cities

20/25 is nothing to sniff at. I'll end up with only just over half seen, though, which is kind of embarrassing. More to look forward to I guess.

Just out of curiosity Holden, can you tell us how many points the two Woody Allen flicks and Alice in the Cities got?
I don't really have the time to look up 98 MoFo's also-rans, one-by-one right now (I can do some of that after the full reveal, next week), but since you asked first: Alice in the Cities had thirty-four points (in only two votes), Play It Again, Sam had forty points (also in just two votes), and Love & Death came the closest with forty-five points (in four votes).

I have a feeling One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest will be in the next couple, perhaps alongside The Godfather Part II.
And when we get to the Top Ten, Jack, I reveal only one title per day. Tomorrow you'll see #10, on Sunday #9, Monday #8, etc., until the final day (next Sunday), when #1 and #2 are revealed at once.

And before tomorrow morning I hope to see a lot more of you post your guesses for exactly how you think the top ten will lay out. Go on record, so we can immediately start mocking you one and two films in when you are completely wrong.

I mean...to see how close you get!

I'm sticking with my original prediction:

10. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
9. Alien
8. A Clockwork Orange
7. Jaws
6. Chinatown
5. Apocalypse Now
4. The Godfather Part II
3. Taxi Driver
2. Star Wars
1. The Godfather

The Mother and the Whore for #1!!!

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
It looks like I'm only going to have 10 movies in the top 100, and 13 movies in the top 130.

1) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (#14)
2) Superman the Movie (#23)
3) Top 10
4) Top 10
5) Didn't make the MoFo list
6) Didn't make the MoFo list
7) Didn't make the MoFo list
8) Didn't make the MoFo list
9) Didn't make the MoFo list
10) Didn't make the MoFo list
11) Didn't make the MoFo list
12) Didn't make the MoFo list
13) The Sting (#57)
14) Kramer vs. Kramer (#44)
15) Didn't make the MoFo list
16) The French Connection (#31)
17) Didn't make the MoFo list
18) Sleuth (#91)
19) Duel (#104)
20) Murder by Death (#101)
21) The Muppet Movie (#69)
22) Didn't make the MoFo list
23) Smokey and the Bandit (#124)
24) Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (#47)
25) Love at First Bite (My One Pointer)

My guess:
  1. Star Wars
  2. The Godfather
  3. Taxi Driver
  4. Jaws
  5. The Godfather Part II
  6. Alien
  7. A Clockwork Orange
  8. Chinatown
  9. Apocalypse Now
  10. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
I'm like 95% sure these are going to be the ten (I think we're done with surprises, especially with this many ballots). But man, I am not confident about order. I think maybe 4 films have a totally legitimate shot at #1, and I feel like I might as well be rolling dice with those last four, which could be in any order, and any of which could sneak into the top five.

My adjusted list

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (13)
2. TBA
3. TBA
4. TBA
5. TBA
6. TBA
7. TBA
8. The Long Goodbye (19)

11. TBA
12. Dog Day afternoon (28)
13. Logan’s Run (100)
14. Blazing saddles (33)
15. Paper Moon (74)
16. TBA
17. TBA
18. Dawn of the dead (35)
19. Young Frankenstein (15)
20. Close encounters of the Third Kind (14)
21. Breaking away (95)
22. TBA
23. TBA
24. TBA
25. The Exorcist (12)

Oh, and just to make things interesting, a prize!

If anyone nails the order perfectly, I'll buy them a Blu-ray, up to a reasonable price. If more than one person does it, I'll see if I can find something cheaper to placate the multiple winners.

Standard disclaimer about reserving the right to refuse a prize to anyone engaging in anything within the vicinity of shenanigans, of course.

In that case:

10. Alien
9. Apocalypse Now
8. A Clockwork Orange
7. The Godfather Part II
6. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

6) Star Wars
7) The Godfather Part II
8) Alien
9) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
10) Apocalypse Now

The Exorcist has the same dilemma that Carrie has. Modern horror movies have evolved to a point where the good ones deliver a strong emotionally thrilling-tense experience. Older horror films can't compete with that. Back in the day The Exorcist was pretty darn terse, creeping out the audiences.

I didn't voter for it, I don't care for horror films. But I can respect it.

Rocky I didn't vote for it but I'm glad to see it on the list. It does have heart! It's great story telling. As VFN said "as was Rocky though the sequels may cast it in an unfair light."

That's true, too many sequels and the original movie gets an egg in it's face. Yo!
