American thriller, 90s

Two couples go to their common secondary residence on the beach. One takes the plane, the other the car. Couple number one is made by a manipulative bitch and a dull engineer, couple number two by a normal girl and a dumb wuss. The nerd and the girl start an affair but can't find the heart to consummate, while off camera the bitch seduces the wuss and uses him to commit the perfect crime. Together, they shot the girl in front of the engineer, who calls the police in shock, but all the evidence points to him. He is arrested, and he explains his version to the prosecutor. The prosecutor, a black guy fond of chess metaphors, believes him, but also adds he's going to jail. In prison, the engineer opens his walk-man and uses the components to activate the electronic lock of his cell. Once free, he calls his wife and threatens her. She panics and meets her accomplice to coach him once more on the version to tell the police, all the while the framed guy records the conversation. With a confession on tape he feels confident, until the walk-man falls on water. He fishes for it and pays a visit to the prosecutor, in the middle of the night. The two listen to the tape, but the audio quality is poor, so the prosecutor's wife, with professional equipment, records a fake version. Then the fugitive comes back to jail and the police summons the conspirators. They are interrogated in separate rooms, and while the woman stands by her version, the wuss cracks down and signs a confession. In the last scene the engineer pays a visit to his wife in prison, and gives away a last reflection while driving back home.
