Best Movie Soundtracks?

Tools

There are many wonderful film scores through the years, but here's a few which never fail to impress.

Ben-Hur - Miklos Rosza(simply a perfect epic film score, with one of the most beatuful central themes you will ever hear)

Conan The Barbarian - Basil Poledouris (quite possibly the best example ever of how important a score can be to the film's sucess. Simply stunning)

Rocky - Bill Conti (inspiring, timeless, reflective, undoubtedly the best work of Conti's career)

Vertigo - Bernard Herrmann (one of many classics from a master in film composing)

Lord of The Rings Trilogy - Howard Shore (when the film score world was in a awful mess of blandness, Shore's masterful work was like a much needed breath of fresh air)

The Final Conflict - Jerry Goldsmith (the icing on the cake, for a superbly written trilogy of terror which began with the oscar winnin THE OMEN)

There are loads more besides, but that's some of my personal faves.

James

I do agree with you though, I liked almost all the songs on the CD, that was one that just didn't mix well.
not to sure what your trying to say, if your talking about the differance between scores and cd's with songs on them from the film, dont they both have the same purpose to convey the feeling of the film,to get a sense of it and kinda get a feeling what its about? never mind that some may be thrown together without thought by bigwigs who think'yeah that group is hot now throw them in' or to earn more cash for a film.

What about Gladiator? That was gnarly.

i think that in 51st dates the song that is played at the end when they are in the boat and when she wakes up is really cool and fitting with the scene....

Rocky Horror Picture Show has the best soundtrack in my opinion! Grease comes in at a close second tho!

Requiem For a Dream
Lord of the Rings
Once Upon A time In China and Claws of Steel(they really go together)
Gladiator
The Godfather
Hero and House of Flying Daggers-I like the music in Hero more but the soundtracks go hand in hand.
Snatch
Deadly Outlaw: Rekka is my fav.

Please help if anyone knows this song. Its close to once upon a time in the west but it is something else.

Queen of the Damned and Maximum Overdrive both have cool soundtracks and both films suck. Highlander is cool and so is the soundtrack, but my best is American Werewolf in London because they use the soundtrack as part of the story if you know what I mean. It just fits in prefectly and doesn't intrude.

My best soundtrack that doesn't use pop/rock songs is undoubtably The Godfather.

Remember the bar band in "Pretty in Pink?" They were playing in the background while Ducky was looking for Molly Ringwald. They were a band called the Rave-Ups.

They sang two songs in the scene and were promised to be on the album ("Positively, Lost Me" was one of the songs and it rocks). Well, they were replaced on the album by OMD.

I spoke to the lead singer of the Rave-ups after a show in Providence like five years later and he was still bitter about the slight. He was convinced if they had been on the album (which was a mega-hit) they would have made it to the big time.

I think the RAD and Rocky soundtracks were the best of all time. full of those montage type songs. Scarface was pretty good too.

Romeo and Juliet

Dune-The Toto score was perfectly overblown
Highlander/Flash Gordon-Ditto except switch out Queen for Toto
2001
Casino-Best use of DEVO by far
