Yes. Yes I did, Spud. I think Joe Versus the Volcano is a brilliant movie, a darkly comic romantic fantasy satire, misunderstood and very underrated. It's one of my very favorites. I've sung its praises elsewhere on the board, including the "Top Comedies of the '90s" thread HERE.

Where's your list, Spudster. Go back as far as you can, top fives, top threes, whatever you can muster.

I'm with you Holden Joe Vs The Volcano rocks I bought it a little while ago and I watched it a fell in love with it I then convince my brother who was like I've seen the movie it's not that good I just told him I was very impressed by "JOE" and that I thought he should definatly give the movie another try so he borrowed it from me when I asked him what he thought he said it was great. I think it's one of those word of mouth movies were someone says it's bad but it really isn't you just have to give the movie a chance and have your own opinion about it. Rent that puppy again spudracer I think you'll love it.

The moon shot were he stands up is incredible I love love love that shot it's a wet dream shot for me HA ! HA ! HA !

2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
3. The Matrix
4. Forrest Gump
5. The Usual Suspects
6. Memento
7. Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone

You have no idea how hard this list was to make.

This is the best you could do for movies in 1990? GoodFellas in the same boat as Jacob's Ladder? Joe vs. the Volcano? Tremors?

What about: Reversal of Fortune
Misery was better than Tremors!
Postcards From the Edge
Greencard was great! A much better performance from Gerard Depardieu.
The Hunt for Red October came out in 1990.

Holden, your list is incomplete.

Quick Change, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, Misery, Awakenings, Dick Tracy, Miami Blues, The Hunt For Red October, Metropolitan, Q&A, and I Love You to Death would have filled out my 16 through 25 spots for 1990, but I was trying to keep 'em to a fifteen maximum on years with lots of favorites, already bending the rules from a "top ten".

Reversal of Fortune had two great central performances by Irons and Silver, but I didn't think the movie was spectacular overall. Green Card is a piece of ***** (and I happen to be in love with Andie MacDowell), far and away my least favorite Peter Weir movie. You think Depardieu's performance is much better than what exactly? And while I like a lot of Mike Nichols' work, I found Postcards from the Edge very overrated, despite an amazing cast. Carrie Fisher's book is much better than the adaptation.

Do you want a list of movies I didn't like from 1990? Young Guns 2, Loose Cannons, The Rookie, The Desperate Hours, The First Power, Graffiti Bridge, Revenge, Days of Thunder, Rocky V and Bonfire of the Vanities were the pits. The Godfather Part III was a big disappointment. I thought Ghost was horrible, I actually fell asleep in the theater watching Edward Scissorhands, and the most overrated movie of the year by far was Dances with Wolves.

And yes, I love Jacob's Ladder, Joe vs. the Volcano, Tremors and everything else on that list: that's why they're there. I don't think any of those are as good as GoodFellas, which is why that movie holds the number one position (and number one for the whole decade too).

My list isn't incomplete, just different from yours (apparently). Where ARE your lists, Sades?

Green Card is SO not a piece of sh*t. It was funny, witty, sweet, endearing...and if you are in love with Andie MacDowell, then this is her best showcase. You have another movie she was in that featured her better?

My list is coming when I'm ready to do it. It's a long excersise, I'm not willing to put anything less than 100% into it. Besides, I'm having more fun disecting your choices.

Since I'm thinking about it, I'll do the year 1990
1. Goodfellas
2. Godfather: Part 3
3. The Hunt for Red October
4. The Grifters
5. Misery
6. Post Cards From the Edge
7. Reversal of Fortune
8. Edward Scissorhands
9. Green Card
10. Home Alone

Personally I thought McDowell looked particularly attractive in "The Muse." She's not "showy" beautiful...which I can't help but appreciate. She sure has aged gracefully (she's 43, in case any of you were wondering).

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
And too old for you there TWT.

It's amazing how well people in Hollywood hide their age. I mean Ah-nuld and Sly are up there almost 60, and they look like late 40s early 50s.

Oopsie...sorry to get this off subject.

Now With Moveable Parts
1991

1. Silence of the Lambs
2. The Commitments
3. Cape Fear
4. Bugsy
5. Thelma and Louise
6. Backdraft
7. City Slickers
8. Fried Green Tomatoes
9. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
10. L.A. Story

Andie MacDowell's best acting is still Soderbergh's sex, lies & videotape, followed by her work in Altman's Short Cuts, Wim Wender's The End of Violence, and Michael Lindsay-Hogg's The Object of Beauty. She also turned in a very strong dramatic performance in "Dinner with Friends", which premiered on HBO earlier this year. I thought she was very funny in Hudson Hawk (the "you must talk to the dolphins" bit always puts me on the floor), just right in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and absolutely perfect in Groundhog Day. Also, I would have been very "obsessed, thank you very much" with her in St. Elmo's Fire too.

All of those are I think beter showcases for Andie MacDowell. She wasn't bad in Green Card, definitely my favorite thing about the movie, but the script was tedious and obvious, and from a filmmaker like Weir it was a huge step backward. You can disagree of course, but for me Green Card was a crushing disappointment, considering the talent involved. This was the same year Depardieu was so spectaculr as Cyrano, and you prefer the garbled would-be light romantic fluff in this flick? OK. We definitely differ on that.

I knew you were going to say that. I hated this movie. It was well acted, I'll give it credit for that, but it was talky and slow moving with no payoff. Soderbergh's weakest work.

Soderbergh's weakest effort.
And I knew you were going to say that. "Talky" was the design and rather the point, "slow moving" isn't a negative here but the best way to unfold a small character study (what did you want, a car chase?), and it had a fantastic, perfect pay-off. Peter Gallagher's hypocritical character having to watch helplessly as his wife opens up and is about to experience real intimacy with Graham is great stuff.

And how many of Soderbergh's movies have you even seen? I'll wager you likely haven't seen at least three of the following: Kafka, King of the Hill, Schizopolis, Gray's Anatomy, The Underneath and The Limey.

"It was well acted, I'll give it credit for that..."
Isn't that what you were asking for? It is Andie MacDowell's best work. You want to see her act, look at sex, lies and videotape, not Green Card.
