Here is an overlooked movie. The reason maybe because of its limited release and subject matter. This movie surely was pioneering for its time. The movie is about a Master Sergeant in the Army (played brilliantly by Rod Steiger) who is a latent homosexual. The setting is at a military gasoline dump somewhere in France right after the end of WW2. You know the theme of the movie at once, when the Sergeant kills a young Nazi Soldier and pets his dead body. The movie then jumps forward in time. The sergeant is at odds with himself and his homosexual desire, but represses his lust due to military and social circumstances. In fact the Sergeant assumes a dominating position and the drunken officer at command ratifies all of his orders. This movie is great because it touches on the old theme that homosexuals cannot reproduce, but must recruit their partners. A must see!
