I'm gonna buy it as soon as I get paid next week so I'll watch it many many many many times, just to understand the mysteries of the 'box'

This is what I think.......

WARNING: "Mulholland Drive" spoilers below
It's not that clever on my part, but the segments where the blonde is Betty and the Brunette is Rita are Diane's bizarre fantasy in order to try to make it real with ?Carmella?. Rita has the key to Betty's box, literally, if you know what I mean.......Does that sound sick?

Mischief. Mayhem. Soap.
Most of Barton Fink - still their best work, alongside Miller's Crossing

Did you notice in Miller's Crossing that one of the apartment buildings (I think it is Tom's) is called 'Barton Apartments' or 'Barton' something?

That was intentional. The Coens suffered from writers block, apparently, while putting together the story for Miller's Crossing. They took some time off, wrote (or made? I'm not sure...either wrote, or wrote and made) [i]Barton Fink[/b], then came back and finished. So the name of Tom's apartment complex is indeed a nod to their other film.

And I assume there's the same kind of story with H. I. McDonough in Raising Arizona working at Hudsucker Industries.

Indeed. And let's not forget that the phrase "and if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his a** a hoppin'" is used in both Raising Arizona and The Hudsucker Proxy. In the latter, it was spoken by the newspaper editor, John Mahoney, AKA "Frasier's Dad." The former was Trey Wilson, IE: Nathan Arizona...who was originally intended for the role of Leo in Miller's Crossing. Wilson died before production began and Albert Finney took his place.

God Bless the Internet.

Thank you, Coen Brothers Geek!

The Coens used "Hudsucker" before Raising Arizona (1987), in Crimewave (1985), directed by their friend Sam Raimi, who also co-wrote the script with them. Raimi returned the favor by co-writing The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) with Ethan & Joel.

See? I'm not the resident Coen geek. Raimi also had a cameo in Miller's Crossing, as that dude with two guns in the long (brown?) coat that gets all shot up and whatnot.

Is Crimewave any good?

I also saw Episode I for the first time, really, this weekend.

No, Crimewave is pretty awful. Raimi had no pull yet, and the movie was taken away from him by the investors (still an extremely low budget flick) an re-edited quite a bit. Many other compromises were made during the production itself.

There's a decent chapter about it in Bruce Campbell's autobiography If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor. Campbell was supposed to play the lead, but that idea was nixed by the producers. Instead he has the smaller role of world-class heel and jerk standing in the way of the lead and his potential gal pal. Of course Campbell is in The Hudsucker Proxy as Smitty, Amy Archer's reporter friend at the paper.

Crimewave has a couple moments, but it need only be seen by Coen and/or Raimi fans who feel a need to see absolutely everything those guys have done.
