It's looking like Pirates of the Caribbean is going to open gangbusters; virtually every box office pundit, from Gitesh Pandya to Lee Tistaert, has it cruising past $100 million on its opening weekend. Reviews are mixed, though, and the flick'll be fairly front-loaded, so I still don't see it busting into the Top Ten, or really running away with any long-term marks. Should open ridiculously strong, though, and at this point it's hard to imagine any other film grossing more over the summer. So, unless it experiences an X-Men-3-esque dropoff, I'm thinking anyone who had it at #1 overall is going to end up being right.
Box Office Prediction Quiz (Prizes awarded)
Me thinking something is going to make a heap is the surest sign it's going to fall on it's face, so I stayed out of this. Great idea though, 7th!

Yeah seems POTC cant really miss, that is unless Snakes on a Ladder beats it.

Early Friday tallies have POTC2 at a whopping $55 million for Friday; a record by an incredible $5 million. This is probably a good $7-8 million than even the more optimistic forecasts had it at.
It'll certainly suffer some sort of dropoff in the next couple of days, but it looks like we have a new opening weekend champion.

It's at least an opening-day champion. Here's a quote from Greg Risling (AP):
"Move over Darth Vader. Captain Jack Sparrow is king for a day. Preliminary estimates released by Disney show that 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' earned $55.5 million on Friday, which would set the record for the largest one-day take at the box office. The previous record was set last year by 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith,' which grossed about $50 million.
Yowza. Maybe I'll make an effort to see it when there are still big crowds going. I love going to movies with good-sized audiences. And if this one tanks fast, I won't get the opportunity after this weekend!

It's just nuts. $132 million in the first weekend, despite the lackluster reviews. Nuts, I tell ya.
Now I want to see it, just to say I did.

I personally think that a lot to do with the records this film is breaking has to do with the timing. It was perfect in my opinion. I have yet to see it, but I am going to next weekend I think. The movie-going audience was bloodthirtsy for an all around family/action film. This fits the bill I am sure. I look forward to watching it with my family.

I think you're precisely right. Lack of any real competition, right smack in the middle of the summer blahs. Just the right amount of hype and marketing, really good trailers that played up what people liked about the first movie, etc.

i expected something close to 100 mil like 96 or something like that but 130+ i mean this is crazy poor Man of Steel took a bealing like a little kid
and the reviews weren't exactly lackluster they were accually 50-50
but still when it comes to blockbusters reviews rarely come into play
i mean SR got great reviews and got bad word of mouth and poor reaction from fans
x-men movies got bad reviews except for the 3rd one and they did good in box office
and i seen MI:3 which got good reviews and did poor in box office
in most cases the reviews dont really affect the BO result

True enough on fans thumbing their proverbial noses at critics.
By "lackluster" I meant the overall sum-total of reviews averaged out ... which, frankly, for the amount of hype and money spent, were lackluster. In school, a 50% average was failing.

I am currently working on finalizing this. Unless he returns my pm's soon I am going to exclude Tim, he has not posted here recently and he has very few posts anyway. But if he responds soon I will include his answers. Thanks.
