Hi
Seabiscuit could take adaptation due to the source material popularity and the likelihood of ROTK cleaning up best picture, director and technicals.

What happens if our personal picks win and not our predictions?
What'll you do then, huh?

I saw Triplets of Belleville today...it better win Best Animated. It blows Finding Nemo away in originality and entertainment value, hands down.

I would advise you not to count on it...but only if Spirited Away hadn't won last year, thus proving that anything's possible.

Put me in your pocket...
I have a question hopefully someone can answer.

Millennium Actress was originally released in 2001 in it's native language, but was released with english subtitles in 2003. Technically, Could it have been nominated this year for best animaton? Just wondering.

I have to mention, I'm glad Billy Crystal is hosting this year.

I am having a nervous breakdance
I just wanted to mention the swedish film Evil that is nominated in the Best Foreign Film category.

Subtitled or not, doesn't effect its eligibility at all (it's the same movie). But you're only eligible for Oscar consideration once. Whenever it played in those specified NY and/or Los Angeles theaters that a film must have a run on to qualify, that's the year it is eligible.

The story of Chaplin's Limelight is an odd illustration of the "it must play at the specified qualification theaters" rule. Released in 1952, Limelight was considered a misfire from Charlie Chaplin at the time, and it hardly played anywhere. In 1972, a revival print played at one of the qualification theaters in Los Angeles. It didn't play in one in 1952, and hadn't in any year since then. That made it eligible at the 1973 Academy Awards....where it was nominated for, and won, the Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score.

Thank you Holden. I was hoping you'd have the answers. D@mn your good.

Chaplin's Limelight...thanks for sharing this interesting bit of Academy Awards history. I never realized movies had to be played in certain qualified theaters in Los Angeles and NY to be considered eligible for that year. Thank you.

I thourougly enjoyed lost in translation an think it deserves best picture of the year. I'm glad that the oscars were taken over by small independant films this year! I think the movies nominated for best picture year are very good. As for me i wish lost in translation would win best picture and sofia coppola would win best director it would be nice for a women to win.

The Mad Prophet of the Movie Forums
Yay!

Although I'm slightly upset that Murray didn't win best actor. He was PERFECT in Lost in Translation (which, for my money, is a perfect film). Head-and-shoulder over Penn's great performance...alas...just one more person that was robbed by the Academy.
