Hands down, the single greatest animated science fiction film.
I would disagree on this. It is in my top 5 favorite science fiction animated films, but not first but I will show in my list if science fiction films.

Highly influential masterpiece which is the Clockwork Orange of ultra-violent anime.
Indeed. It was the highest grossing film in Japan in 1988.

A serious animated film that is rated R in the US.

Sit Ubu Sit.... Good Dog
I recently watched Metropolis for the first time and really liked it, I always put off watching it because I thought I'd be bored out of my mind watching a black and white silent film but was pleasantly surprised instead.

you covered most of my sci-fi favorites... especially the Thing, Alien, Star Wars, Empire, Blade Runner, Terminator and Terminator 2

is They Live considered sci-fi? would have liked to see that one make it. some others i enjoyed not on your list- the Invisible Man (1933), the Time Machine (1960), Forbidden Planet (1956), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and the Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). but since it's your list,

My name's Bobby Peru, like the country.
12 monkeys was a great film of it's time, It explored time travel in a different light keeping the film's universe in a constant loop.
