I've seen it three times as of now. I tried watching it for the fourth time, but gave up. Not because I didn't like it anymore, but because I remembered way too much and it really felt like a rewatch. You see, when I saw a film a couple of years ago, watching it again may feel almost like watching it for the first time. I usually remember the basic concept of the film and maybe some scenes that stuck in my mind, but the overall experience feels almost like watching it for the first time. If I were to watch a lot of the films in this top again, this might feel like watching them for the first time, too. And I'm looking forward to it. Obviously, the more time from my initial viewing, the stronger the feeling of watching it for the first time. It will never really feel exactly like it, but it's close at times. Rewatching some of these in, say, 10 years may really feel like an initial viewing.
Well, I pretty much summed up my love for Shame in the post you quoted. The third viewing proved to be less profound (I already comprehended its structure and plot point), but still incredibly fascinating. I actually picked it back up for the third time thinking I may have overrated it the first two times, but (and this is a very noice butt) after my third viewing, my thoughts about the film did not change much. I think it's the best 2011 film along with The Tree of Life and The Turin Horse.
By the way, I just got 67 reps from you. Thanks!
