My Top 100 list & Tell Me Yours

Tools

Hmmm..Karl it seems you are a bit of a Clint Eastwood fan with 5 of his movies on your top list. Those are all favorites of mine among his work too, coincidentally. The rest of your list is solid as well. I would particularly praise your selection of The Mission --though I am assuming that you are referring to the Robert DeNiro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson film, which is, as you say, great. The score is one of it's strongest points, as it is scored by famed Italian Ennio Morricone, who also scored In the Line of Fire and a few of Clint Eastwood's earlier films, including the "Dollars trilogy."

L.A. Confidential, The Matrix, Shawkshank Redemption and Malcolm X are all particularly good as well.

Karl, just a note, if you are referring to Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar winning masterpiece, the title of the film is Unforgiven , not "The Unforgiven."

liam's 14! cool someone else here thats not already 80 years old!

Karl- like how you say in no particular orde, because after the first 50, we are all just thinking of of movies that we like.

"I can't help it..."
Yeah... I probably should have put more thought into some of the placings on the list.

19) Police Academy - What the f**k was I thinking?

9) Road Trip - What can I say... I can't help it. Being a teenager, I usaully have to sit through grueling "teen movies" with my friends, and I just thought that out of all of them that I have seen, Road Trip was the best.

I'm going to make another list this time & not be half asleep.

I hate being so young & my friends don't have their love for movies that I do. So I go on the net to find some with the same love of the Art we have all come to know as movies.
And here you are!

Hey, and L.B. Thanks for saying that my list isn't that bad.

Ain't that the truth! Great observation.

""Hmmm..Karl it seems you are a bit of a Clint Eastwood fan with 5 of his movies on your top list.""

Not really a big fan. It's just that some of his work is really good.

""The rest of your list is solid as well. ""

Thank you.

""I would particularly praise your selection of The Mission --though I am assuming that you are referring to the Robert DeNiro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson film, which is, as you say, great.""

Yes, that is the film. The Mission is just an all around outstanding film experience. It has beautiful scenery/choreography, great acting, a suspenseful plot, action and, as you mention, a terrific score by Morricone. Plus you have DeNiro and Irons. This has got to be one of the most over-looked movies of all time.

""The score is one of it's strongest points, as it is scored by famed Italian Ennio Morricone, who also scored In the Line of Fire and a few of Clint Eastwood's earlier films, including the "Dollars trilogy.""

He is quite prolific. He also did The Thing, which is in my top ten. Just simple, stark music that perfectly compliments the tone of the film.

""L.A. Confidential, The Matrix, Shawkshank Redemption [/i] and Malcolm X are all particularly good as well.""

LA Confidential is a superb film achievement. Shawshank Redemption is pure entertainment, and Malcolm X is very interesting. I really despise the liberal agenda, and I assume this movie is not too historically accurate (just like Hurricane). But it still makes you think, and I really like the work of Denzel Washington. He typically does a great job. I think he should have won the Oscar in this movie, instead of Pacino for Scent of A Woman, although I realize Al was the sentimental favorite.

""Karl, just a note, if you are referring to Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar winning masterpiece, the title of the film is Unforgiven , not "The Unforgiven." ""

Thanks for pointing that out. I actually thought about that before I typed it in, but thought it still had "The" in it. I was wrong.

Now it's time for your top 100.

The One movie I would strongly disagree with on your list would have to be Aliens. it's got the same looking effects as Cameron's Terminator and a really bad storyline. it uses cheap suspence tricks and tacklicks to keep the audience involved like the little girl and the family at the begininng. Most if not all the characters play to themselfs and the love thingy between weaver and Biehn is sad. You also have to consider that the first one was made a good some 7 years earlier and does a the job so so much better.

all in all, I'd say Alien than Alien III than Aliens than the last one which was pretty sick and twist and I for one expected more from the guy how brought us The City of Lost Children and Delicatessan.

It has the same effects as Terminator because they are only two yrs apart. I agree with you in that the little girl sub-plot got carried away. But the movie succeeds because it brings the claustrophobia of the original and even increases it in several scenes.

Plus, we already know what the monster is about, so the suspense will not be as intense as the original. It does, IMHO, make up for that by increasing the action to a considerable degree. I think Aliens is a fine, action/sci-fi vehicle. It blows away anything that has come out in the last several years.

I agree with you about Aliens 3. It was a very underrated film. Everyone was expecting the same action extravaganza as with the first two. I think A3 was delightfully dark and grim. I liked it. It is not as viewable as the first two, but it represented a nice change of pace from the predecessors.

The last film tried too hard to be twisted. It had too much of a European influence on it. Like you said, the director from those two films, plus Ron Pearlman. It had Winona Ryder in it, which was nauseating. However, Brad Dourif's presence cancels her out. The film was still uninspired.

Now don't get mad at me I'm glad you made a list but your list looks like AFI's top 100 there no real movies that I could Identify with you. No movies in their that I could say wow that movie in your top 100 there all movies that are loved & cherished by all expect for a few.

I'd say Dark City is a real intresting pick most people go with Matrix.

Stagecoach I like, but there's a good 5 other John Wayne or John Ford movies I like more (Rio Bravo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Red River The Searchers & The Quiet Man than comes StageCoach).

King Kong I didn't particularly like it's all about man and there destructive nature with a big monster to bring people in and the remake is all about the greed of humans both I like but not top 100 material for me.

81- L.A. Confidential - I don't see the appeal like other do same thing I like it but not Top 100 also the director in my opinion maybe a much better picture called Wonder boys.

I'll make some more comments on your list later

Peace

Crazy. You are right though, my list does have many from the AFI list. Quite frankly, I agree with a lot of what they picked. (and also disagreed with some) Why? They are great movies, some of the greatest ever made. I added some newer ones as well, some that I thought were very well done. How you can look at my list and find any that arent excellent movies is beyond me. My list is pretty accurate.

See the first word of my rant.

Notice your use of the word "I." Does that mean you speak for everyone?

King Kong comes across as a very intriguing movie in my book. Not only the visuals (for 1933), but the story as well.

it's not that I don't find most of them good to great it's just that there nothing in there that jumps out at me everything seems to be what ever body else says is great.

I'm not trying to say that your list is in any way worser than mine or that you are playing it safe by listing the majority of what others love or for that matter that your list isn't honest to you. I just fell like there a lot of neglected films espically foreign films and films that I could say "that's an intresting choice". that's for me thou. keep up the good work and thanks for saying more than just CRAZY .

How do you know this? I don't think I've ever met you before, so tell me. I like these movies, it's not to "blend" in with everyone else.

"I" as in me just me that's it and that's all

you may disagree with what movies "I" like more and put before stagecoach.

There's no one here over 40; BTW. I want to know something about these lists of movies you are all coming up with. Are these your personal favorites or the top 100, if you were the last word in movie greatness?

Those are what I think are the best ever.

Now With Moveable Parts
fair enough.

I hate to admit this; because I am such a lover of movies...but I honestly don't qualify to make a list like these. I can list about 100 of my favorite movies, but I can no way, shape or form, claim to know what is the best. First, I haven't seen a lot of the movies that OTHERS claim are the greatest. There are so many movies out there...most of my movie watching experience comes from movies that I've seen in the last 10 or so years. The only exsposure I've ever had to older movies, are the ones my mom rented and I just watched out of curiosity. How many of you can say that you could pass up the new release section for the oldies? Be honest. I mean, movie greatness doesn't start the year you were born, kids.

honest sades, that's pretty much all I really rent is older films anyting from 1996 to 1920. I think in the last 5 years i've watch maybe 150 of the new releases that have come out and that out of at least 1000 movies made in hollywood alone not counting foreign films. A perfect example is that fact that I just recently watch American Beauty for the first time.

Also watching movies in the theatre which I go to about 2 or 3 times a month. other than that new releases cost to much I'm not rich so I stick with the cheaper ones 2 movies for a dollar in the older movie section.
