Whats Your Faviourite Horror Movie?

Tools

The best horror film ever was the original The Haunting--no ugly monster, no blood splatters, no silly special effects, and nothing jumps out of the dark at you; just a well-told spooky tale that lets you use your imagination to scare yourself.
I agree with your sentiment and almost with your assessment of 'best'.

I'd have to put The Innocents just a tiny bit above the Haunting

I should add though not really scary I still really like The American Werewolf In London and Underworld.

Surely though, modern day horror is just the american industry taking a quick glance at the surface of japanese horror, grabbing some generic by-the-book first time director and ripping it off.

Horror is in a sad state of affairs, as a lot of people don't care about it.

It's not good That's why I'm living in the past. :P
Filmmakers these days make the mistake of "making a MOVIE out of a horror movie".

By this i mean they try too hard to scare u. Put some cheap scary music in every single scene, have the girl walking around checking weird noises, loud annoying soundtrack that makes u cover your ears rather than your eyes etc.

Due to these cheap tactics, we are reminded we are watching a movie and therefore, dont feel scared. A movie has to feel real and use less editing and less flashy camera work. Just hold the camera still damn it!!!

And as u said, they hire some by the book director.

For me, Saw I-IV are my favourite modern horror films, but my all time favourite has to be A Clockwork Orange.

Halloween movies, saw movies, any zombie movies. i just love how they do them and they don't scare me just entertain me

I've watched some of the horror genres, and the scariest I've seen were the Ringu Series from Japan... No blood, no gore, no hacking.. but all of them were totally sooooo scary, I couldn't watch TV for a long time, and watch any resthouse scene from any other movie without being freaked out... If some of the MOFOs have watched it, you'd totally understand why...

The last movie that made me get scared was:
The Ring

The last movie that made me get scared was:
The Ring
The Ring was actually a spinoff of the Japanese trilogy, Ringu... I highly recommend you watch it... Pretty scary stuff, Ray...

Here some that stand out in my mind:
(I own and love pretty much all of these)

Ju-On [Aka The Grudge - Japanese Original]
Ringu [Aka The Ring - Japanese Original]
Black Christmas (1974)
Fright Night (1985)
Re-Animator (1985)
Audition (1999)
The Orphanage (2007)
Salem’s Lot (1979)
Amityville Horror (1979)
Friday the 13th (1980)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Pet Sematary [Stephen King] (1989)
Halloween (1978)
The Haunting (1963)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
The Wicker Man (1973)
The Thing (1982)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Omen (1976)
Braindead (1992)
Let The Right One In (2008)
The Fly (1986)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Shining (1980)

I recommend all of these, there's a real mixture here from gory stuff to psychological horror.

That'll do for now...I think I'd better make a top horror films list soon.

Best Horror Film:
1. The Ring
2. The Grudge
3. Shutter.

I have to agree with whoever said Hellraiser. I enjoyed them all immensely. Though, the later ones never scared me as much as the original! GO PINHEAD! Also I have to agree with Pam1120. Shutter did scare me pretty bad. It was definetely a quality movie, plus I was LITERALLY scared. I had to keep it in a drawer that was NEVER opened so I didn't have to look at the cover. haha. I still love the movie though!
