Is Loach the greatest British film-maker still working? Maybe. This is a brilliant film and plays out like a desperate plea for compassion in the face of ever divisive politics of immirgation and poverty.

There are two fantastic performances from pub landlord Dave Turner (TJ) and Ebla Mari who plays Yara, a Syrian refugee. TJ tries to do what's right and show a little hospitality to the newly arrived refugees, but the locals dissent and are confused as to why the local population (in dire need of income and regeneration) aren't being helped first. The ending is a gutpunch of emotion.

This is a situation being mirrored right across the UK and further afield. Loach nails it beautifully and unsurprisingly has a swipe at the government of the day for causing this situation. What's the answer? It's not straight forward, but the very least we can do is to re-discover a little humanity. One of the best films of the year.
