Need help identifying a movie.

My friend remembers watching a movie where a boy makes a wish and accidentally turns into a dog when one jumps in front of him. He says that at the end he is still a dog and he just lays down under a tree and he assumes that he died of old age or something. Anyway I can't seem to find any infromation on this oddly depressing movie.
Does it ring any bells to anyone?

How long ago did he watch it? Was it at the theatre or at home? It's in color? Any other rememberances would help.
