Song Lyrics that make you think

99% of all song lyrics are of the "baby, baby, i love ya baby" variety. what band has lyrics that read like the most brilliant poetry? lyrics that completely blow your mind? i'm talking pink floyd style lyrics. something mind-altering.

the band that does it for me? tool. there are others, but right now i'm on this weird tool kick where i can't listen to enough of them. the new album completely rules.

yeah, lennon was a true artist and a humanitarian. how about his stuff with the beatles?

As I know the more observant MoFos have guessed, I'm not a big fan of that song.

Lyrics that make me think?

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
O Death - Ralph Stanley
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
That Thing - Lauren Hill
Stranger in Moscow - Michael Jackson

I'm not saying all of these are deep...but they're lyrics I enjoy and like to think about...especially the first two, which blow my mind.

deep songs are the best, imo.

queen is one of my favorites. not only were they an incredibly ballsy, hard rock band (thanks to brian may) they also had a very operatic quality. almost reminiscent of townshend's work with the who or roger waters' stuff with floyd, both of whom are known for their story-telling-through-concept-album-style.

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouche, scaramouche, will you do the Fandango

i've always been a fan of REM's lyrics.

and i should mention a song that has always made me think-
..it is sad, and i don't like hearing it because of how true it is.......Cat's in The Cradle by ?........Harry Chapin
(oops. fixed it-- thanks for the correction Holden).

Not Jim Croce, but another guy from the '70s who died too young.

Harry Chapin is the singer/songwriter responsible for "Cat's in the Cradle", from his Verities & Balderdash album.

thanks H........i hesitated before i said Jim Croce.
what a shame----we seem to lose a lot of musicians at a young age.
was Croce in a planecrash? what about Chapin?

Now With Moveable Parts
Utopia
=====
We'd gather around all in a room
Fasten our Belts engage in dialouge
We'd all slow down rest without guilt
Not lie without fear disagree sans judgement

We would stay and respond and expand and include
And allow and forgive and enjoy and evolve
and discern and inquire and accept and admit
and divulge and open and reach out and speak up

Chorus:
This is my utopia
This is my ideal my end in sight
utopia this is my utopia
this is my nirvana
My ultimate

We'd open our arms
We'd all jump in
We'd all coast down into safety nets

We would share and listen and support and welcom
Be propelled by passion not invest in outcomes
We would breathe and be charmed and amused by difference
Be gentle and make room for every emotion

Chorus:

We's provide forums
We'd all speak out
We'd all be heard
We'd all be seen

We'd rise post-obsticle more defined more grateful
We would heal be humbled and be unstoppable
We'd hold each other close and let go and know when we do
We'd release and disarm and stand up and feel safe

Chorus:

Alanis Morisette

wow, you consider MoFo a utopia? that's a pretty high compliment.

i like songs with a sort of hidden social commentary. did anyone here ever listen to pink floyd's "animals" album? that's genius. waters takes an orwellian turn with his lyrics and compares people in society to animals. it's great listening, if you haven't heard it.

i know you don't want any profanity (i remember THAT episode so long ago ) but how about links to song lyrics? if i post a warning BEFORE the link would it be ok?

geez, no need to be so enthusiastic. i'm only asking because i don't want to make anybody mad.

k, just like to check. as i said earlier, i've been listening to a ton of tool lately. they are so completely awesome. they are the very antithesis of sugar-pop. one of their best songs is "aenima". did you ever get those days where you're tired of living in this modern era where bland, homogonous, like-minded thinking is encouraged and individuality is quashed in favor of cliques and social standards? maynard knows your pain:

warning f-bombs like you wouldn't believe:

just for the record, the song is about california crashing into the ocean, but he's not literal. think of the lyrics like you would "a modest proposal" by swift. it's just an exaggeration to get a point across.

I've just recently started listening to a lot of Clutch....they're like pro-rock, and I think they've been around for a while. The one thing I really like about them is their lyrics.

I won't bore you with an entire song, because I know reading the lyrics for songs which you haven't heard is somewhat boring (at least, it is for me), but here are some choice examples of the lyrical genius that is Clutch....

=======
Wishbone
=======
In the morning the weathercock was heard
asking what he had learned, of the Earth.
"Is it a round place with deserts and oceans,
housing as many winds as one might wish?"

We were standing by the gate.
He said, "Oh my, it's getting late!"
Then he took off flying to the south
with a black snake in his mouth.

=========
Ships of Gold
=========
Tin shacks and catfish bones
have been about all I've ever known.
The junebugs rattle and roll
around the old maypole.
Thunder and lightning,
the catfish are biting,
I took a riverboat downstream.
I think you know what I mean.
The chicken hawks, they are gathering.
Above my head, they are circling.
Old friends come out visiting,
say, "Hi," and talk about collecting.
Stray dogs won't come near me.
Was blind, now I see clearly.
Believe I'm fixing to die.
