Dark Skies is Poltergeist with aliens. Still one of the creepier alien abduction movies you will ever see, it looses significant points for not having an actual ending. The family being pestered by the supernatural represents a trope typical of the 90s and new Millennium in Hollywood, i.e dysfunctional.

The tone of the movie is dark giving it an X Files feel, so at any moment you expect Agents Scully and Mulder to turn up. There are some 'nightmaric' sequences of pure 'surrealness' as well, which adds to the overall darkness of the movie. One of the best aspects of this film is that its 'scares' are played subtly for the most part.

As a comparison to similar genre films, its better than Fire in the Sky but no way near as creepy as The Fourth Kind. Like I said, this is Poltergeist for the new Millennium with some shots and scenes lifted directly from the Spielberg classic. There seems to be a fine line between plagiarism and a paying a homage.

The film fails terribly due to a botched ending and climax. Was there an extra 20 minutes cut before the final credits? The anti-climatic ending we are shown relies too much on a twist most people would have probably figured out halfway through the film. 6/10.
