Song Lyrics that make you think

Tools

The Smashing Pumpkins just never grew on me. Didn't like Corgan's (is that his name?) voice. I'll give 'em credit for their lyrics, though ('cept for all that "rat in a cage" stuff. ).

Anyway, here're the lyrics to Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise, which is in my top ten favorite songs of all time, I'd say. Utterly ageless to my ears. The lyrics sound better than they read, of course.

PASTIME PARADISE
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They've been wasting most their lives
Glorifying days long gone behind
They've been wasting most their days
In remembrance of ignorance oldest praise
Tell me who of them will come to be
How many of them are you and me

Dissipation
Race Relations
Consolation
Segregation
Dispensation
Isolation
Exploitation
Mutilation
Mutations
Miscreation
Confirmation.......to the evils of the world

They've been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They've been looking in their minds
For the day that sorrow's gone from time
They keep telling of the day
When the Savior of love will come to stay
Tell me who of them will come to be
How many of them are you and me

Proclamation of Race Relations
Consolation
Integration
Verification of Revelations
Acclamation
World Salvation
Vibrations
Simulation
Confirmation.......to the peace of the world

They've been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They've been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
We've been spending too much of our lives
Living in a pastime paradise

Let's start living our lives
Living for the future paradise
Praise to our lives
Living for the future paradise
Shame to anyones lives
Living in a pastime paradise

the pumpkins were awesome. their lyrics were good, and the guitar playing was unorthodox. very cool.

Sha, right. Bullet With Butterfly Wings, honestly, to me, hardly sounded like music. Did you hear the chorus? Blech. 1972 was more melodic, but I could hardly hear what he said (and the video had him looking like a vampire...I have no idea why).

lol.... what's with you and understanding song lyrics? it's like you want to be able to hear them or something....

seriously, they use way too much distortion, but celebrating your own weirdness is what rock is founded on. progressive rock anyway. somebody probably told chuck berry that his blues-based riffs didn't even sound like music because he played them with an electric guitar.

but you're point is well taken. it's understandable. they were only popular as part of the alternative rock movement that happened after nirvana dissolved. nobody liked them after 98.

Yeah, don't mind me. I've been listening to The Foundations and Stevie Wonder and some other older stuff, so I'm venting over some more modern stuff. As for lyrics: actually, I dunno...sometimes I like not knowing...I almost dislike MJ's You Rock My World more now that I know it word-for-word. Before I just had he basic sounds and kinda mumbled along with it...which was fun.

Anyway, I wish I could post MJ's lyrics in this thread, but fact of the matter is he's not that kinda musician. His stuff's got a beat. I'd say Stranger in Moscow's the only song of his who's lyrics might qualify here.

his lyrics are pretty simple, but the real reason people like his music is it's stuff you can dance to. that has it's appeal too, i guess.

right now i'm laughing my tushy off at dynamite hack's cover of "boyz-n-tha-hood" that's just too funny for words.

the thing that makes it funny is the fact that they didn't change the lyrics from the original at all.

what you're hearing is pure nwa as written by dre and the guys themselves. played on acoustic guitars, of course.

Actually, Ice Cube wrote all of NWA's lyrics. Dre just produced the track.

Wow, I'm interested to hear your feelings on System of a Down, TWT. If you think Smashing Pumpkins are weird...

Well, Frankie Lee and Judas Priest,
They were the best of friends.
So when Frankie Lee needed money one day,
Judas quickly pulled out a roll of tens
And placed them on a footstool
Just above the plotted plain,
Sayin', "Take your pick, Frankie Boy,
My loss will be your gain."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat right down
And put his fingers to his chin,
But with the cold eyes of Judas on him,
His head began to spin.
"Would ya please not stare at me like that," he said,
"It's just my foolish pride,
But sometimes a man must be alone
And this is no place to hide."

Well, Judas, he just winked and said,
"All right, I'll leave you here,
But you'd better hurry up and choose
Which of those bills you want,
Before they all disappear."
"I'm gonna start my pickin' right now,
Just tell me where you'll be."

Judas pointed down the road
And said, "Eternity!"
"Eternity?" said Frankie Lee,
With a voice as cold as ice.
"That's right," said Judas Priest, "Eternity,
Though you might call it 'Paradise.'"

"I don't call it anything,"
Said Frankie Lee with a smile.
"All right," said Judas Priest,
"I'll see you after a while."

Well, Frankie Lee, he sat back down,
Feelin' low and mean,
When just then a passing stranger
Burst upon the scene,
Saying, "Are you Frankie Lee, the gambler,
Whose father is deceased?
Well, if you are,
There's a fellow callin' you down the road
And they say his name is Priest."

"Oh, yes, he is my friend,"
Said Frankie Lee in fright,
"I do recall him very well,
In fact, he just left my sight."
"Yes, that's the one," said the stranger,
As quiet as a mouse,
"Well, my message is, he's down the road,
Stranded in a house."

Well, Frankie Lee, he panicked,
He dropped ev'rything and ran
Until he came up to the spot
Where Judas Priest did stand.
"What kind of house is this," he said,
"Where I have come to roam?"
"It's not a house," said Judas Priest,
"It's not a house . . . it's a home."

Well, Frankie Lee, he trembled,
He soon lost all control
Over ev'rything which he had made
While the mission bells did toll.
He just stood there staring
At that big house as bright as any sun,
With four and twenty windows
And a woman's face in ev'ry one.

Well, up the stairs ran Frankie Lee
With a soulful, bounding leap,
And, foaming at the mouth,
He began to make his midnight creep.
For sixteen nights and days he raved,
But on the seventeenth he burst
Into the arms of Judas Priest,
Which is where he died of thirst.

No one tried to say a thing
When they took him out in jest,
Except, of course, the little neighbor boy
Who carried him to rest.
And he just walked along, alone,
With his guilt so well concealed,
And muttered underneath his breath,
"Nothing is revealed."

Well, the moral of the story,
The moral of this song,
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong.
So when you see your neighbor carryin' somethin',
Help him with his load,
And don't go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road.
"The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest", by Bob Dylan.

OK. You've become my hero. Tool is my favorite band and youre right, their lyrics aren't all mushy gushy lovey dovey type crap which is what I love most about them. Led Zeppelin is also one of my favorite bands. Some of their songs are really beautiful I think. I also think Creed has thrown out some songs which kind of make you think. Sorry, it's 3:30 AM. Another sleepless night. Oh poo.

They're pretty weird, too. I've heard a few of their songs, and Chop Suey is the only one I can stand. What's that other one? Toxicity? Doesn't even sound like music to me half the time. Ain't my bag.

I hate System of a Down. Probably has something to do with the fact that my sister's boyfriend listened to them non-stop. I've had my fill. Bleck.

*Start dancing sexy*

*Take it, Robert Palmer*....

We want to multiply, are you gonna do it
I know you're qualified, are you gonna do it
Don't be so circumscribed, are you gonna do it
Just get yourself untied, are you gonna do it

Feel the heat pushing you to decide
Feel the heat burning you up, ready or not

Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry

The girl is at your side, are you gonna do it
She wants to be your bride, are you gonna do it
She wants to multiply, are you gonna do it
I know you won't be satisfied until you do it

Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry

I was wondering if there was a music thread around here somewhere, and lo and behold! Color me happy--but not badd.

There was some talk of ska earlier... does anyone here listen to punk rock? I love all kinds of music, but if it came down to having to choose just one, for me it would be punk.

Talk about lyrics that make you think. Two sample great, great, great bands:

Propaghandi--mostly-Canadian activist-based band, v. v. pissed off:

You can rearrange my face
but you can't rearrange my mind.
You can beat this shell about me
but you can't touch what's inside.

(from "Who Will Help Me Bake This Bread," a song about--what else--standing up for what you believe in. The music rocks--it's hard and fast and mean. I chose a non-cursing lyric )

Dillinger Four--highly-evolved version of the garage punk band, also pissed off:

There's no room for another way
and you learn that every single day,
till you almost believe it.
And they put you right there in your place
till you spit it back in their f*cking face.
Try to make you a martyr,
they keep on pushing till you push back harder.

(from "Suckers INTL. Has Gone Public" and the album Dillinger Four Vs. God--just kick-ass beyond all belief)

Other great punk bands I like: Bad Religion (the granddaddys of thought-provoking punk, and the guys who helped get me into this when I was fifteen, along with Dead Kennedys and Screeching Weasel), Face to Face, Fifteen, NOFX, Rancid, Descendants...

And, of course, Blink-182:

Fell in love with the girl at the rock show
She said "What?" and I told her that I didn't know

That's some deep sh*t right there, yo.

Wow. That just reminded me of that story about the Red Hen who wanted the other farm animals to help her in all the preperation of baking a loaf of bread...and no one helps her, 'cept when it's time to eat the bread, then they all want a piece. She tells them all to piss off.
**gather 'round children**
There's a moral to the story...

(damn it's late, I need to go to bed.)

Exactly! I was hoping someone would pick up on that. You're one smart chickie .

That's the big message of the song--that everyone wants a world where good things happen and there's no injustice, but no one wants to work for it. The guys in Propaghandi are working for it, in their own way.
