some of it can get cheesy, though. no arguments.

True; I find it's one of two extremes. Some of the lyrics are corny, but most, I find, put some really impressive strings of words together. But it's got to be music first, and message second, IMO (usually), to be really good. Your message will reach more people that way anyway.

Soundgarden's pretty cool. I'm not a big fan, but I can't stop digging Spoonman.

hey, do you like ska?

Now With Moveable Parts
Yeah! I don't know a whole bunch...but I love some of No Doubt's stuff...and then the bands I just mentioned. Whoa! When did my post count clear 3000?! Wow! I'm so cool!

some ska is annoying, but less than jake and goldfinger were two bands i listened to during my high school days.

Now With Moveable Parts
Goldfinger...refresh my memory. Did they have a hit?

not really. i mean, they had a really good album called "hang-ups" that came out in the mid-90s but nothing that i noticed on the radio or anything.

Pearl Jam - Last Kiss

--

Oh where, oh where, can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car,
We hadn't driven very far.
There in the road straight ahead,
A car was stalled, the engine was dead.
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right,
I'll never forget the sound that night.
The screaming tires, the busting glass,
The painful scream that I heard last.

Chorus

When I woke up, the rain was falling down,
There were people standing all around.
Something warm flowing through my eyes,
But somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said;
"Hold me darling just a little while."
I held her close I kissed her - our last kiss,
I found the love that I knew I had missed.
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight,
I lost my love, my life that night.
Chorus

my vote would go to pearl jam's "do the evolution". that song has some extremely thought-provoking lyrics.

I'm not old, you're just 12.
Patti Smith is my current favorite, but mainly her first three albums. The later ones are alright, but I don't like them as much. Patti Smith is really poetic and literary, but her music also rocks really really hard. The entire album "Horses" is just brilliant.

Favorite lyric: "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine..." - Patti Smith, "Gloria" recorded in 1975.

speaking of poets, everyone says jim morrison is overrated, but i can't get enough of that stuff. some of it is radio-friendly pop rock, but so much more is thought-provoking, deep lyrical genius.

"Grade" has some of the most interesting song lyrics, and also song titles.

Song: The Inefficiency of Emotion
- You broke my heart before I had the chance to fall in love.

Song: A Year in the Past, Forever In the Future
- This is time in my life where everything is falling apart, and at the same time, it's all coming together.

- Those summer days that I longed for never really were what I wanted them to be, just like when beautiful people drive ugly cars.

Song: Stolen Bikes Ride Faster
- Some people like to go some of the way, but I like to go all the way. You have to claim responsibility for your own perfection.

- Stolen bikes, they ride faster, but you always get caught beneath the wheel.

Song: The Tension Between Stillness and Motion
- I'm at a loss for words, but I keep speaking.

- Your courage cannot be approached with caution.

- I'm 100 percent that I'm not sure.

- If I want it, I'll get it. And you know what? I want it all.

- It's the difference between what's right, and doing the right thing.

Song: Overthrowing Creation Itself

Song: The Worst Lies are Told in Silence

Song: Becoming Not Being

Other Grade quotes:
Why must I be a paintbrush when we need a wrench?
An idea is only as good as its inspiration.
You're a better fantasy than a reality.
Does arithmetic count?
Are we here to understand or to survive?
You can never move forward while standing still.
Why are people more interested in how a building reaches to the sky, than it touches the ground?
Life is different ways of not dying.

I don't feel like spending the time figuring out which song the rest of those quotes are from.

Oh, and two songs of Goldfinger's that were pretty big are 99 Red Balloons ( cover of the 80's song Neunundneunzig Luftballons [ german ] ) and Here in Your Bedroom. Also "Superman" was on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater game's soundtrack.

does anyone here listen to the beasties?

i think i remember sadie liking them.

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez

And it's Eastertime too

And your gravity fails

And negativity don't pull you through

Don't put on any airs

When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue

They got some hungry women there

And they really make a mess outa you

Now if you see Saint Annie

Please tell her thanks a lot

I cannot move

My fingers are all in a knot

I don't have the strength

To get up and take another shot

And my best friend, my doctor

Won't even say what it is I've got

Sweet Melinda

The peasants call her the goddess of gloom

She speaks good English

And she invites you up into her room

And you're so kind

And careful not to go to her too soon

And she takes your voice

And leaves you howling at the moon

Up on Housing Project Hill

It's either fortune or fame

You must pick up one or the other

Though neither of them are to be what they claim

If you're lookin' to get silly

You better go back to from where you came

Because the cops don't need you

And man they expect the same

Now all the authorities

They just stand around and boast

How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms

Into leaving his post

And picking up Angel who

Just arrived here from the coast

Who looked so fine at first

But left looking just like a ghost

I started out on burgundy

But soon hit the harder stuff

Everybody said they'd stand behind me

When the game got rough

But the joke was on me

There was nobody even there to call my bluff

I'm going back to New York City

I do believe I've had enough

L.B.J and I were just discussing them on the other music thread.

Beasties are cool.

I want to add Smashing Pumpkins to my list of bands with cool lyrics.

DISARM:
Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
Ooh, the years burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
To wither in denial
The bitterness of one who's left alone
Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my voice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
