Potential Oscar Candidates for 2002

That's not relevant, man. Did you read what I was talkin' about? You can't make up for past mistakes by making more of them. Don't give someone an Oscar because you "owe" them. Give it to the best...if you fail, don't try to make up for it later...give it to the best each year. If you give it to someone other than the best to make up for before, then you've just snubbed someone else.

I'm tellin' ya...the academy loves that handicapp business! Look at all the past recipients that played a physically or mentally challenged individual. Sean Penn is in prime postion this year, I'm sold on it...for sure a nomination, maybe not the prize. Hey, wasn't Dancer in the Dark released this year too? Ooooh, if it was, I'm goin' Bjork.

That was last year. All the critics were saying 'Bjork, Bjork, Bjork".
She sang a song dressed as a swan but did anyone else even HEAR the name Bjork let alone "Dancer in the Dark" around Best Actress as everyone said we would? Hell no.

She's not American!! Julia Roberts is American!!
We have a winner Johnny!! Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!!!

I agree with you TWT [for once] DON'T PAY PEOPLE BACK!! IF YOU STUFF UP WITH GIVING THE WINNER TO SOMEONE WHO SHOULDN'T NECICARRILLY BE WINNING IT, DON'T PAY THEM BACK 'COS YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT IT!!

STOP LIVING IN THE PAST!! MOVE ON!! LIFE IS TOO SHORT!!

Who will get the lifetime achivment first?
Coppola or Scorcese??
If either....

Coppola has won Oscars for his directing and writing. He won Best Director for The Godfather Part II. He also won Best Screenplay Oscars for his writing on The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and Patton. Both Godfathers were also named Best Picture.

Scorsese has zero Oscars...though he has accepted one. When Ellen Burstyn won as Best Actress for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore at the '75 ceremonies, Marty went on-stage to pick up the trophy for his absent star. Who knew then he'd never be back?

Sadly it is Scorsese who will probably end up with a Thalberg Award before an actual Oscar. That should be embarassing to the Academy.

Yeah I knew their respective Oscar tallies, I just wanted to know what people would think.

And actually you're wrong, Holden, he was up there once collecting an Oscar and another time not accepting -- what was he doing??

He was up there with Bobby DeNiro presenting the controversial honorary lifetime achievement award to Elia Kazan at the '99 ceremonies.

I meant of course that he'd never be back accepting an Oscar of his own. He still hasn't been. But he's attended the ceremony many times since 1975. He keeps getting nominations of course. And many of his actors have been nominated/won, so he's there to support them.

Scorsese's nominations...
as director: Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and GoodFellas
as screenwriter: GoodFellas and The Age of Innocence
Best Picture: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and GoodFellas
actors (winners notated by asterisk): Ellen Burstyn*- Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster - Taxi Driver, Robert DeNiro*, Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty - Raging Bull, Paul Newman* and Mary Elizabeth Mostrantonio - The Color of Money, Joe Pesci* and Lorraine Bracco - GoodFellas, Robert DeNiro and Juliette Lewis - Cape Fear, Winona Ryder - The Age of Innocence, and Sharon Stone - Casino.

Hopefully they'll wise up some day before he's dead and buried like Hitchcock and Kubrick.

Oh yeah...oops. My bad.

Didn't he also present a lifetime award to the singing in the rain guy in 1997?

Yes, Scorsese presented Stanley Donen, another notoriously snubbed director, with his lifetime achievement Oscar as well. Donen's acceptance speech was one of the best in recent years. He even did a little impromptu tap dancing.

I think Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone has a very good chance of getting a best picture nomination, so far this year. But I would be very suprised if there doesnt come many movies that beat it out

I have to disagree heavily...I don't think it has any real shot at getting a nomination (and yes, I'm a huge Potter fan, and enjoyed the movie). I think LOTR has a much better shot, but honestly, I'll be a little surprised if it's one of "The Five" as well. The two awards I REALLY wanna see this year are:
  • Best Animated Feature: "Shrek" against "Monsters, Inc." Wow, I don't know which I liked more. Maybe the latter, even though I love "Shrek."
  • Best Adapted Screenplay: Potter and LOTR. Yikes. My opinion is that if LOTR does anything other than make a real mess of the story, it's got to get it...LOTR seems much harder to adapt...plus, it really looks like it's kept more to the spirit of the book than the Potter movie did. Harry Potter covered all the plot points and most of the major characters were okay, but the feeling of it was somewhat mixed...you only heard from the select characters, mostly. Anyway, I've already covered these gripes in my review...I won't go over them agian.

I would be surprised especially with the healthy looking roster of movies coming out in the next few months to see Harry Potter get a best pic nomination but it will definitely be visible come March.

Best adapted screenplay. I loved Steve Kloves screenplay. How do you condense Potter the book into Potter the screenplay and keep the fans happy? I don't know, ask Mr. Kloves. Wonderful screenplay. Colombus couldn't have gone wrong.

Best supporting actor. It could be a stretch to see acting nominations for any of the kids but what about Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid? In many ways he stole the film. He's gotta be in consideration.

Best Visual Effects. Maybe.

Best Art Direction. A shoe in. I don't know how much of Hogwarts or Diagon Alley was made in a machine but if any of this was a set then give those guys the award this instant.

Best Cinematography. I loved the lighting on Harry Potter. Most movies that have special effects go for dark lighting to hide the flaws, but Potter was bright, bright, bright.

I definitely think the technical awards are going to be a race between Potter and LOTR this year.

If it's done right, and well LOTR should get the adapted screenplay, directing, and (really depends on how the other contenders pan out this december) best picture nod. The acting looks good too, so ya never know. Hey -- star wars got the nomination, only that wasn't based on the most popular fantasy book in history.

I thought Alan Rickman did the best acting in Harry Potter!

Royal Tennenbaums, if it's as good as it looks should get the best pic nom.

might not even get a nomination, but i think tony scott for best director.
And so far this year harry potter should win best visual effects
If ocean's 11 is any good soderbergh will get a nomination for director, i thought daul was good in joyride.

Just read that "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge is ineligible at the Oscars for Best Song.

I sooooo wanted to see Nicole and Ewan performing together on stage.

"Come what May" was written for Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet but wasn't used. It was then put in Moulin Rouge. INELIGIBLE!

What a stupid technical rule from the Academy.

Ed Gonzalez from Slant magazine described it as "Good Will Hunting Redux". Since Good Will Hunting was good and Apocalypse Now Redux was better than Apocalypse Now, A Beautiful Mind=better than Good Will Hunting= Definite oscar candidate.
