A movie's age does not make it essential viewing. I find Fight Club criminally overrated, yet I would not deny it status as essential viewing, simply for the fact that it is culturally imporant. Same with Pulp Fiction, which suffers from the same "too eager to be hip" formula. My perception of it not being a particularly amazing film is irrelevant to the notion that it is essential viewing.
Hell, I'd say Gone With the Wind is essential viewing, and I can't stand that movie.
