Obscure film recommendations?

Tools

A few British gems: The Ruling Class - A man who goes from thinking he's God to a mass murderer. Black comedy mixed with musical.

Naked - Mike Leigh's only dark film. Lots of rich, yet sometimes silly dialogue from a man who knows he ****ed up his life.

Withnail and I - A film about friendship and the lack thereof simultaneously as two people drink themselves into a million british slurs worthy of quoting on a daily basis

I'm trying to find some lesser known films that might be interesting, cult films and indie films, stuff like that.

Any recommendations for me?
Clue has built up a culty sort of following. It was panned by the critics but it's a funny campy comedy (based on the board game Clue)

This Property is Condemned is not that well known a film but I'm not sure why because it's good.

I love The Ruling Class (a lot of people don't) but which version is commercially available these days? There is a short version, a longer version, and an even longer version. It didn't occur to me it was an obscure movie because O'Toole was nominated for an Oscar and I figured with that kind of attention it wasn't obscure. But that's why obscure is a personal thing. If you don't know the movie, it's obscure.

Most of the films recommended here aren't "obscure". I don't think an obscure film is a personal thing at all, but that's just me.

Yeah, seriously. Obscure is does not mean quirky, weird, or anything to do with the subject matter. It just means that it hasn't been widely released in any format for people to access it. Chances are, if you've heard of it, it's not obscure. Kind of a catch-22 term, but I think it holds. For example, have you guys ever heard of this terrible film? I have, but I found out on a blog so that means thousands of other people know about it too. At the least thousands that is.

Here's two films that I watched yesterday that I would consider obscure. You've heard of them now, are they still obscure? By the way, I would recommend them both to someone looking for something a little different. There's probably only one way you can find them, and not everyone is down with this method.

Moi un noir (1958, Jean Rouch)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051942/

The Unscrupulous Ones (1962, Ruy Guerra)

Nice. New rule: if there's an "add poster" image for the film on IMDB, it is obscure.

I see. You want to keep this method on the downlow...d.

Then again, how is it up for DL unless there was some kind of DVD copy first? Unless DL is not what you are talking about.

As far as I know, it's only on the Criterion Collection, which is the 140 minute version

Might be from a VHS, or something. I know I'm reluctant to dump my VHS collection, as a lot of the films still aren't on DVD.

The Ruling Class isn't that hard to find. I got my copy from play.com, though it is the 2 hour 4 minute version and not the R1 Criterion verision. So, if that's the version you have, then keep your VHS one for a bit longer, but if not, then you can get a copy for about a fiver.

I can only assume you've seen Donnie Darko?

If you like intelligent sci-fi you could do a lot worse than checking out Phase IV directed by Saul Bass (who was best known at the time for designing film title sequences - including Hitchcock's Psycho). The story revolves around a couple of scientists studying super intelligent ants in a hi-tech desert lab. It's largely overlooked and very underrated in my opinion; with some exquisite macro-photography of said ants, and an enchantingly weird Zen-like atmosphere. I'd say this fits perfectly into that 'interesting cult' category you referred to.

Yes I love the title sequences by Saul Bass. I'll have to find that film.
