Watching an old favorite - The Thing From Another World. It's a terrific classic, 1951 sci-fi/monster film, in which an extraterrestrial plant monster that looks a lot like actor James Arness arrives when his flying saucer crash lands near an Arctic outpost and leaves "eggs" in the greenhouse. It's really a good movie, with a small cast of well drawn characters, military, civilian and those oddballs.....scientists. It has slight hints of cold war paranoia, post-war military "right stuff" and seems to hint at some equivalence between science and people who might be subversive.
Directed by Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby and shot in really nice, high contrast black and white, with menacing incidental music by Dmitri Tiomkin. This classic has been remade a couple of times, but this is the one to see.
