Secret Favorite Movies...

Tools

Well, when some friends (who are not very knowledgeable about movies) asked me what was my favorite movie I said I didn't have an specific one (which is partly true, while I say I like Totoro more I think it is very hard to choose each one from my top 10) and so I said a couple of some from my top 15 which were more popular, or I though they had maybe watched, so I said: Seven Samurai, 2001 and Apocalypse Now. Movies from my top 15 which I though many people have seem. They though I had a strange taste in movies! I should have said Totoro anyway...

Really, all my friends who have a favorite movie cited The Godfather as their best movie, how boring that can be? Not that it is a bad movie, but please, make a more creative choice.

And of course it only goes downhill from there... but, the director (or some other main guy involved with it,) went on to create Summer Wars (2009), a feature-length and much better produced anime movie with the same plot of the first half of Digimon: The Movie! So I'd advise just watching that if anything I just described seemed remotely interesting, because Summer Wars really was a phenomenal movie.
Indeed, Summer Wars is easily one of the best animated movies ever made.

It's not about being creative, it's about what's your favourite film. Why can't you get this?

I am not really hush hush about certain movies I like. Hell one of my top ten favorite movies is The Book of Eli. A movie that seems to be very divisive. People either love it or hate it. And my 2nd all time favorite movie is Red Dawn. Something truely awesome about Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen vs the Russians and Superfly. Clearly I do not have a card that says pretentious film snob. lol

Now if we are talking guilty pleasures, I have a few movies I legitimacy guilty about liking. Mostly because I generally hate movies that have these characteristics or by certain directors.

Bad Boyz II: I do not like Micheal Bay. Everything that defines Micheal Bay as a director are in this movie in spades! I should hate this movie. But for some damn reason I like it. Not enough to by on DVD but still I will watch it if it is on HBO.

Rock of Ages: I hate juke box musicals. So why do I like this movie? Number one this actually has some music in it I like, and number two the music fits the damn time period. Nothing more jarring then watching Moluin Rouge and hearing KISS, Madonna, The Police, and modern music in the year 1899. And I thought it was kinda funny. But oh boy do I see the major flaws. Cliche, predictable, corny, and according to wikipedia not respectful to the source material at all! But for some damn reason I dug it. I think the jabs at the PMRC helped too.

Well, like I said, you're not going to see many of those at all. What, 3 movies listed here have qualified so far? I think "Black Sheep" should reasonably qualify, at least for me, because I can't even THINK of any movies anywhere offhand that I'd be GENUINELY embarassed to admit I liked. "Black Sheep" was unrealistic and stupid, with a few funny moments, and for that, it won me over.

Logically, I shouldn't like it, but I do, even though the public, and the critics, did not. If that still does not meet your strict criteria...well, sorry.

Ok this quote is exactly what I was looking for as I was thinking/reading the posts. I love the movie Black Sheep, and of course obviously its not a quality movie, but its a silly funny movie which I think are just as good and valuable (to me, anyway, because I love comedies). I think it's hard for people to judge what's a "bad" movie and a "good" movie because if we thought it was a bad movie we wouldn't like it. But if Black Sheep qualifies, I've got tons, because I love stupid movies often, but I also appreciate well done movies, though I think alot of "classics" or highly regarded films are not that great. Anyway, my pick is...

Zoolander. I never hear anyone give this movie a good word, I think it's one of the funniest movies ever and I have watched it very possibly a thousand times, no exaggeration, and one of my favorites.

Wanted to stick up for Mallrats too! Horrible acting? Yes. Ridiculous story? Yes. Fun to watch? Yes.

And I guess along those lines I should add anything Jason Lee is in, I like him but he is an awful actor.

Really? everyone I know who has seen Zoolander loves it. Before I saw the film, all I read about it was positive.

Zoolander is very good. It has some problems, though, preventing it to be a great movie, in my opinion.

I guess I should explain myself a bit more..?

Zoolander is funny. I obviously think so, but I wouldn't consider it a good movie. Besides the characters of Zoolander and Mugatu, and MAYBE Ballstein and Hansel, being awesome and well written/acted characters, its pretty dumb in my opinion. Again my opinion.

I love Mallrats! But again, not a very good movie. The acting is horrible! It's Kevin Smith, I'm a fan, but I have to say, he's got downfalls.

Which also, I think I should add Mallrats to movies in mostly 1 location...

I generally don't like "bad" or badly received movies but one movie I loved that was panned by critics and audiences alike was the Topher Grace movie "Take me home tonight" I've watched it no less than 10 times. I'm a sucker for 80's throwback stuff.

I am the Watcher in the Night
mmmm I'm not gona say there;s any movie that I like and keep secret. If I like a movie that most people dislike or vice versa, they have to deal with that. It's all about personal opinions. I still remember one of the first times I posted on this forum got into an argument why I believed Vertigo is not worthy of a top 10 listing let alone number one...personal preferences.

True. No one has the same tastes. Myself, some of the movies I like a lot of people would think were crap. And a lot of movies other people like I think are crap. Someone above me said Vertigo was a dog, but I really like that movie. One of my favorite movies is a 1950's low-budget cheapie called The Giant Gila Monster. Terrible special effects, worse acting dumb script, but theres something about it that makes it a very enjoyable flick for me. Its just what a person likes, even if its crap.

Superbad and Borat. Both just have the same sense of humor as I do.
