A Tune for June (song tourney)
Same as was done for March.....
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'. Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point). The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month. Winners of previous 'rounds' are ineligible -
list here
Simples but if any relevant questions just ask. |

Just a reminder for anyone else looking to join in Round 1 that nominations for it will close in a little under 19 hours from now.
|
Giving a shout-out to @Derek Vinyard, @jiraffejustin and @pahaK since they played last time and may not have seen this thread. Would be fun to have them join again, even if it's just for select rounds.

Setting myself up for failure. Pusha's probably not an entry-level rapper, but whatever. I like it. |

1. Joshua Ray Walker - Lot Lizard
(I think JJ either nominated or messaged me a song from this dude before, but if so the song didn't really make much of an impression on me. Well, this one certainly did. Dude has the range of a hound dog. That may not sound like a compliment, but I mean it as one. Good lyrics as well. The genuine article.) 2. Slipknot - Unsainted (I've never really given Slipknot their due, probably because of dumb high school associations (the kids who were obsessed with them were the same ones rocking KoRn t-shirts just a couple years earlier, and the mask thing also seemed like a stupid gimmick), but I haven't been able to get enough of this song since first hearing it. I think it's time I put aside biases and dive into their back catalogue.) 3. Wolf Alice - Blush (Vulnerable and pretty. I can see myself listening to this again. Thank God someone in the comments clarified that the person in the video isn't the actual singer, because I was very confused at first.) 4. Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver (As a big fan of Dio's version, I was ready to write this cover off, but they did just enough to make it their own while still saying true to the original. Also I'm just in a metal mood at the moment. The video was also very entertaining, parodying all those nerdy, cheesy 80's metal music videos.) 5. Electric Youth - Tomorrow (I always enjoy this nostalgic, 80's-inspired synth sound.) 6. The James Gang - Walk Away (I've heard this song many times on the radio, but never knew who it was by.) 7. Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche (Makes me want to take piano lessons.) 8. Martin Delray ft. Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm (Much prefer Cash's original over this hillbilly stomp cover, but Cash's involvement at least keeps it close enough to the real thing.) 9. Johnny Mathis - 99 Miles From L.A. (A driving song that threatens to put people asleep behind the wheel. Despite being a bit sleepy for my tastes, it's still a pleasant/chill listen.) 10. Beethoven - Choral Symphony, End of Mvt. 4 (I recognize the liveliest part, around the 3-minute mark, from many shows/movies, usually as the backdrop for something comedic like a slow-motion food fight.) Liked every song to some degree. |

Round 1
Johnny Mathis - 99 Miles From LA - I don't think I've heard this before, but it instantly worked on me. After about a minute or so I was thinking I might have this above my own choice. Which is the only one I knew I knew before listening. Wolf Alice - Blush - I've only recently found this band and haven't listened to much, but this grabbed me straight away. Even if it's the only song of theirs I end up really liking, I know it'll be around for a long time with me now. If you do like this, I'd also recommend Moaning Lisa Smile. That's the other one I thought of using but went with this one. ELECTRIC YOUTH - Tomorrow - I liked this but it's one note and outstayed its welcome. Had it been a couple of minutes shorter I'd probably think better of it. Slipknot - Unsainted - I think I have this so high because a lot of this round was quite mellow and, well, I've just had a really rough few days. Beethoven - Choral Symphony, End of Mvt. 4 - It's Beethoven. He does big and overblown really well. The rest is just... nice. The James Gang - Walk Away - Pleasant, easy 70's listening with a hint of country. Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche - Is nice. Sounds like we all went for something pretty subdued and mellow., Martin Delray & Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm - It's country, but it's not really annoying. I wouldn't choose to listen to it, but that's OK. Joshua Ray Walker - Lot Lizard - More country but not horrible. I think if I was in a better mood I might enjoy it a bit more. Engage - Holy Diver - Even when I really liked Iron Maiden, those middle albums of the 80's weren't my favourites and part of that was because of this kind of thing. I thought it sounded like a Dio cover even before I found out it was. :D Just not my thing. |

Round Two
1. Turnpike Troubadours - Gin, Smoke, Lies ('Cuz all I smell is authenticity and great f**king music.) 2. Lynyrd Skynyrd - That Smell (One of my favorite Skynyrd tunes.) 3. Santo & Johnny - Sleepwalk (Crazy how just a few strings can evoke such emotion and imagery. Like being transported back in time courtesy of a steel guitar. Just wish the song was longer!) 4. Megadeth - Addicted to Chaos (Enjoyed this a surprising amount given my typical indifference toward the band and my general dislike of Mustaine.) 5. Carla Thomas - (I'm Afraid) The Masquerade is Over (I love the wide range of music that's being nominated so far. This song is pure class.) 6. Pusha T - Come Back Baby (The sampling of George Jackson's soulfulness really helps to elevate this. Also: can't hate on a song that namedrops Ric Flair.) 7. Redbone - Come and Get Your Love (Another song that I've heard countless times but never knew the artist. A definite mood lifter.) 8. Vanic - Save Yourself (ft. Gloria Kim) (Not terrible, just not a style of music that ever does much for me.) 9. Neil Diamond - Remember Me (Neil Diamond =) |

Maybe top five. I love it. Those dudes are kind of local legends around here. I hope Evan gets his life in order and they can keep making music. |

Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart
I fully understand that country radio won't go full underground and play all the nasty looking dudes I like, but I wouldn't mind if they would play more stuff like this Maddie & Tae song. |

Re: A Tune for June (song tourney)
Man that "3" is waaay bigger than I expected, guess I should've looked at the dimensions before adding it to the post :D
Nominations now open for Round 4..... |
1. William Clark Green - Ringling Road
2. Enamel Animal - Unfaith 3. Champaign - How 'Bout Us 4. Brother Cane - Got No Shame 5. Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart 6. Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind 7. Symphony X - Electric Messiah 8. Michael Romeo - Fear of the Unknown 9. The Runaways - Cherry Bomb 10. Jean-Michel Jarre - Fourth Rendez-Vous Round 4 nom: Horse Party - Animal |
The Runaways - Cherry Bomb - I didn't expect a song to be nominated which would beat this one for me, but Champaign got a lot closer than I expected. I'm not a big fan (I barely know any of their stuff) but this song has always been fantastic.
Champaign - How 'Bout Us - I've always liked this song but never knew who it was by, so thank you whoever nominated it (too lazy to look back:D) this was a nice interlude in my day. :) Brother Cane - Got No Shame - Well that was a rocking good time. Thank you. Michael Romeo - Fear of the Unknown - Fast and punchy. It doesn't go on too long. I like it Symphony X - Electric Messiah - This is on the outskirts of my wheelhouse, but I like it. These always seem to be a little too long, but other than that I'm happy with it. William Clark Green - Ringling Road - I quite liked this. Not sure if it's something I'd listen to again and again, but it passed its time nicely and didn't outstay its welcome with me. Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind - More emotive than the following, so goes above it this time. Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart - Radio-friendly country. Light and inoffensive. Jean-Michel Jarre - Fourth Rendez-Vous - Familiarity and the fact it's short means it just finds itself above next place. Enamel Animal - Unfaith - Maybe it's just my mood today. It's ok, but it's just kind of there. Turns up a little after a few minutes, but even then it's just the same. Maybe it's just because I'm unfamiliar with it? |
Hard round, liked all songs!

Nom Round 4
The Clash - Rock The Casbah |
Round 3
1. William Clark Green - Ringling Road (I haven't liked anything else I've heard from this guy, and I don't necessarily think this song is great or anything, but it's impossible for me not to dig it given the various elements: a circus theme, substance abuse problems, a noir-ish intro, a coda that spirals into madness, a video that circles around a dead clown . . .) 2. Enamel Animal - Unfaith (I love how this song continued to morph and change as it went along. At first I thought it was going to be a whispery, ambient piece; then the guitars suddenly come to life. Just as I thought it was going to be an instrumental, the vocals start. What began as sleepy background music had me banging my head by the end. Impressive. Never heard of this group, but judging by the video views, neither has anyone else.) 3. Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind (Pretty sure I've nominated this in the past. Sound quality feels a bit off in the link, but it doesn't take away from the song. Love the sparseness that's like a western desert. It really puts the emphasis on the emotion and the lyrics.) 4. The Runaways - Cherry Bomb (I wish we had chicks with this level of spunk and attitude in the mainstream today.) 5. Champaign - How 'Bout Us (Pretty smooth. The type of song that slow dances the listener while subtly grabbing two palmfuls of butt cheek.) 6. Symphony X- Electric Messiah (For the most part, this song didn't do much for me, but that guitar solo was killer.) 7. Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart (Solid, radio-friendly country. I feel that the emotion/lyrics are undermined by such an upbeat approach. Or maybe that approach is meant to speak on the ability to get over such heartbreak. Either way, it doesn't quite work for me, but it's a pleasant listen.) 8. Brother Cane - Got No Shame (Not bad, and I can listen to this type of rock all day, but sorta generic/forgettable. I dug the emphasis on the harmonica, though.) 9. Michael Romeo - Fear of the Unknown (Love the ferocious pace and instrumentation. Hate the singer's voice.) 10. Jean-Michel Jarre - Fourth Rendez-Vous (Felt like the intro to a song more than anything.) |

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion - Call Me - Blondie's version is one of my favourite songs and I only recently found this version. Thought it was a great cover. If you like the style but not the cover, try a few of their others. I'd recommend Down On Your Knees or Motorhead Girl. Nice version of Chick Habit too.
Horse Party - Animal - I like this. It's my kind of thing. Texas Hippie Coalition - Moonshine - I liked this, but a little too heavy on the country feel by the end for me. Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman - So mellow and familliar. No problems here. Pretty Reckless - Make Me Want To Die - Pretty sure this has been nominated. That's good though, cos I like it. :) The Clash - Rock The Casbah - I like this song, but I don't like The Clash anything like as much as so many others. Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over - Honestly, I don't know if I could name a Dionne Warwick song that wasn't a cover. Had it not been for Whitney, I don't know if I'd have known who she was at all. :o It's ok, though to me, it sounds pretty much like every other song which sounds like that from back then. Dan Seals - Addicted - What is it with all the country? Still, not too bad but fairly plodding and down. |
Round 4

Re: A Tune for June (song tourney)
|
Round 4
1. Texas Hippie Coalition - Moonshine (More southern metal than southern rock. A party song for redneck headbangers.) 2. The Pretty Reckless - Make Me Want to Die (I've yet to hear a song from The Pretty Reckless that I loved, but I've liked most of what I've heard from them, and I like this more than the average. I'll always have a soft spot for female-led rock.) 3. Horse Party - Animal (I dig the fuzzy, garage-band sound, and I'm sure I'd enjoy it even more if I wasn't a bit hungover at the moment.) 4. The Hillbilly Moon Explosion - Call Me (A fun twist on Blondie's original. I've nominated this group before and likely will again.) 5. Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over (Agree with honeykid that the song sounds a bit same-y compared to other such songs from the era, but it still boasts a magnificent vocal.) 6. Dan Seals - Addicted (Not exactly my brand of country, but I just love that the genre has been heavily represented so far in this tournament.) 7. The Clash - Rock the Casbah (An overplayed classic.) 8. Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman (Never been big on Glen Campbell.) |

Re: A Tune for June (song tourney)
Sorry about spacing out the vote in round 3! had a very busy weekend.
Round 5 Nom: Dream Theater - Untethered Angel |
Round 5 nomination:
The Cramps - What's Inside a Girl? Since participation seems to be lagging a bit, I'm recruiting my pals @cricket, @Nostromo87 and @cat_sidhe. Maybe one or all can join. If so, the rules are in the first post. This tournament's not time-consuming at all (always 48 hours to vote), and you can drop in and out as you please. I know cricket has stopped joining tournaments because he said he's run out of songs to nominate, but surely he can think of one song at a time, even if it's one of the many he's nominated in the past. |
