QUEST INFORMATION

If you've never joined a HoF before or would like a refresher, here are the rules:
  • Everyone who joins must nominate a fantasy film by sending it to me via Private Message. Do not reveal your nomination in the thread!
  • Any film that is tagged on IMDB, the Google sidebar, or described on Wikipedia as fantasy is eligible for this HoF. If your film is not described as fantasy in any of those locations, we can discuss in PM whether or not it is an appropriate nomination.
  • Your nomination should be under 220 minutes in length, and cannot have won any previous Hall of Fame. Some popular fantasy films that have previously won include Beauty and the Beast (1991), The Princess Bride (1987), and Spirited Away (2001). For the full list, please see this thread.
  • Everyone who joins must watch all of the nominated films and post about them in this thread. You do not have to write an extensive or elaborate review, but you do need to say something about each film. While you are free to progress at your own pace within the timeframe of the HoF, falling too far behind and failing to keep us updated may result in disqualification.
  • The amount of time you have to watch all films will amount to approximately one week per film nominated. More films means more time to watch them, and less films means the deadline will be closer.
  • When you have finished watching all of the nominations, PM me a ranked list (where #1 is your favourite film) of all nominations. Films will be scored based on where they ranked on everyone's lists, with the final reveal happening after everyone has submitted a list.

An ancient stone pillar has recently been unearthed.
It appears to have been engraved by the members
of a party who embarked on a dangerous quest.

As archaeologists are able to decipher the writing,
the history of this fellowship will be revealed.
Some fragments are already legible.

Wow! Very stylish presentation, love the attention to details and the little extras too!

I'm in (of course:)) and I believe I have my nom picked out. It's solidly fantasy. I have a very unfantasy day of work:( But when the toil is done, I'll PM in my nom. Really looking forward to this HoF!

If The Princess Bride isn't eligible, I might join. :p

Though I'm still not sure cause I don't know what kind of movies would be in this!

Wyldesyde19 06-26-20 02:21 PM

She always has the most creative HOF openings. I have to think of a nom, but I have a long drive while I go to the Outer Banks for vacation with some friends this next week so that gives me plenty of time to think.

Thanks! The little details are fun to come up with. I'm glad they don't put people off haha.

I had a pretty brutal day at work too. Hopefully yours goes more smoothly!

I should've checked it off ages ago, considering there are like, 2 copies in the house right now haha.

I'm very likely to join this one. I just need to figure out a fitting film (while I like fantasy as a genre, most of the films are actually trash). I have a few decent options already.

Are you trying to imply that films like Deathstalker and Barbarian Queen are not fine art?

For real though, there are a lot of subpar fantasy films out there, but they often have their own charm and can be quite enjoyable to watch. I'm not going down that route for my own nomination, but I'm always happy to watch a B-grade sword and sorcery flick.

I've probably seen the majority of the B-grade sword and sorcery flicks (as a kid, sword & sorcery, post-apocalypse and ninjas meant an automatic watch for me). Some of them still have their charms though, and I still watch them if I happen on a one I haven't seen before (I even rewatch the old ones at times). I won't nominate any of those either and I surely won't go with a children's film so I'm choosing from a rather small number of films :D

HollowMan 06-26-20 11:36 PM

I'd like to join but where can I see a list of previous nominees/ winners? I can't see fantasy films among the speciality HoFs linked to in the introduction.

Like Wyldesyde said that's because we've never ever done a Fantasy HoF before...which makes this HoF extras special! Who knows, if you join maybe your movie nomination might receive the most points and be honored in the MoFo Hall of Fame Archives.:)

Thanks for the invite. I'm thinking about joining this HoF, but I'm on the fence because fantasy films can go in many different directions. I might wait until the reveal to decide, but I've been looking through some fantasy movie lists to try to choose a nom so I'll be ready if I decide to join.

Miss Vicky 06-27-20 04:30 AM

I probably won't join this, but I'll take a look once the nominations are revealed and may give it a shot if it looks promising.

As CR already mentioned, there hasn't been a HoF just for fantasy films before, but there have been some fantasy (or fantasy-adjacent) films nominated in previous HoFs. You'd have to read through all the winners, but I've already taken a quick look and called out the films I thought people would most likely want to nominate.

He did send me his nomination a few minutes ago, however it was already taken so I hope he has a second choice ready to go.

If not, there's still plenty of time to come up with one. I don't have a nomination yet, though I've collected a number of films to watch over the next week, and have an additional 3-4 films in mind to fall back on if no one beats me to them.

Pity I was counting on you to pick something esoteric like Brand Upon the Brain!, Black Moon, of The Exterminating Angel

Anyways I went with a friendlier genre than my second choice.

Re: The Fantasy Hall of Fame

I just rewatched a possible nomination candidate. Now I just have to decide if it's fantasy enough. Such difficult decisions.

CosmicRunaway 06-28-20 06:47 AM

Out of the 8 confirmed nominations so far, our films span 5 decades, and 3 languages. There is a fully animated feature, an anthology, and an apparent preference for high fantasy.

If the fantasy elements are only subtle, that's perfectly fine. There is no minimum amount of fantasy required, as long as it's described as fantasy on IMDB, Google, or Wikipedia.

I think I'm just going to go with the first movie that came to mind when trying to decide what to nominate. It doesn't appear to be on any of the lists, so I can't check who else has definitely seen it. I imagine it'll be a rewatch for most, if not everyone though.

As soon as @Citizen Rules mentioned it to me.. I knew what my film was. My 2nd and 3rd choices came after I mentioned I may join. I even asked @Mr Minio what he thought as I respect his opinion on movies or at least the three I had in mind.

Considering you're keeping new moms for a while after and yeah, we were all pretty decisive right from the get-go, going with a Wednesday Reveal works great.

Yes, new MOMS. It's something we've been talking about and Cosmic seemed like the IDEAL host to run with it since she can keep it fun, exciting and not entirely sexist.

migod, ya miss-spell ONE thing. . .

Hey, I support you on this moms thing. Let’s not be too eager to dismiss this Idea quite yet....

Moms HoF? I thought we decided this was a Video Game HoF now. :p

We'll do this Thunderdome style. Two HoFs enter, one HoF leaves. Place your bets now!

I've seen a few angry moms in my day, I'll not only go with Moms but I'll go as high as 3 to 1.

Strongly considering Harriett Winslow for my nomination.

Re: The Fantasy Hall of Fame

Easy to see where Ed's confuddlement sprang from - it's not all that unusual for there to be a bit of overlap between Fantasy and Moms for guys (even if it does generally occur to those slightly younger) ;)

For the record, if you need a tie-breaker I'm 100% voting for 'Moms that are game on video' :)

CosmicRunaway 06-30-20 11:54 AM

Here are some teasers for tomorrow's reveal (which will likely happen around this time, assuming I'm not late getting off work).

The most recent film is 15 years old.
The oldest film is 56 years old.

The 1980s is our most popular decade with 4 films released that year.
The 2000s is runner up with 3 films released that year.

Two of the nominations were released the same year.
Two of the nominations are from the same director.

Wow, looks like the preference for old school fantasy is reigning rather highly - nice!

Are we talking the full anthology with the side quests or we sticking with the numerical series only?
Just asking cuz I'm a bit of a fan with quite the library to choose from.
;)

I had actually watched a few newer films since I usually go with a nomination that isn't as well known, but even I went with a classic this time haha. I imagine there are going to be a lot of rewatches for this HoF.

I've previously seen 7 of the nominations in their entirety, and part of 1. Most of these I haven't seen in over a decade or longer, so I don't mind that there are going to be so many repeat viewings for me. The other 2 are films I was already familiar with, one of which my roommates have owned on both VHS and DVD for some time now. I know why I haven't watched that one yet, but the other is by a director whose work I typically enjoy, so I'm not sure why I've put it off for so long.

My film does not fall in to any of the common scenarios here.

CR2....Is mine the "odd film out"?

I wouldn't say it's a complete outlier; I just went with commonalities that were easy to condense into simple, bite-sized sentences.

For example, we don't currently have any other films in that language, but we do have two other non-English films, though one of those has a popular dub that some may choose to watch instead of its native language release. So I couldn't really say "3 Foreign Language Films" without that qualifier about the dub.

That and the women here aren’t too keen on it either. They freaked out over the crab that washed up into our canopy 😆

Ed after they are announced I will message you and @Citizen Rules my others I was going to pick from.

CR2 Aalready knows them. I was undecisive before going with my pick.

I’m interested as well. I’ve been watching a lot more foreign films lately.

Cool, I like to know that they were. I made me a list of potential fantasy noms. I just counted and I had 25 on my short list. Some I hadn't seen though. I might end up using some of them in future HoFs.

I have a hunch who the director is.

I didn't have a long list to choose from. There were like three, maybe four films I was thinking. In the end, I decided to go with perhaps the most divisive of them (plus it had some extra value I actually mentioned to CR2 when I sent in my nom - we'll see if I even have to explain myself).

Oh, and I'm also interested in @MovieGal 's potential noms :D

Wyldesyde19 06-30-20 06:25 PM

A few musing as I recover from horrendous sun burn:
I wanted to go with an older film as my nom, and one that *maybe* wasn’t seen by many. But outside of foreign films, which I confess I haven’t watched many when it comes to fantasy, I realized it was going to be hard to find one that was lesser known.
I knew right away I wasn’t going with Conan, LoTR trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy or the Harry Potter series. Nothing against those, as I actually enjoyed many of them, but I wanted to step outside of the box so to speak. There were a few I looked at but was confident someone would nominate them. Hoping I’m correct in that assumption.
I’m really excited about the foreign films that might be nominated as a result.

I've never seen a single Harry Potter movie or Hobbit movie. I did see the original Conan The Barbarian at the theater...and I seen the first 2 LoTR, but hated the second one so I never watched the third one.

I don't know what the other films you considered were, so I can't hint at whether you'll be pleasantly surprised, or horribly disappointed.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but the second one is actually my favourite of the three.

Harry Potter is worth watching. It gets better as the series nears its end, as it gets much darker.
The Hobbit Trilogy as not very good.
Really enjoyed the LoTR trilogy as a whole but agree the second one is the weakest of the 3. That really isn’t a slight though.
I’ll go ahead and state what I almost nominated as I don’t think it will give anything away, but I almost went with Jason and The Argonauts, Clash of the Titans (original), and Krull. Decided against them.
Also, there is a fantasy film for the life of me I can’t recall but it involved the heroes fighting a 3 headed hound very obviously based off of Cerberus around some stone building.
Help? 😑

Hah, you certainly like the Finnish cinema more than I do. Other than that, many of your past recommendations have good (I haven't necessarily liked them always, but they've been the kind of movies that have a high potential for me).
