Re: 20th Hall of Fame
I do believe I'll be going with a classic that has had zero presence in this, as I was previously considering.
Nomination sent. |

Narrowed my possible noms down to 3, can't decide.:confusedwhite:
|
I’ve narrowed mine down to 33 :) and finally decided to just randomly generate one from my options because I couldn’t choose.
Edit: I “generated” and it’s an animation, hope everyone’s okay with that. |
Re: 20th Hall of Fame
Also... just to confirm anyone can host these? I thought that whoever won the last one has to host the next one, since I saw Siddon won 17th, hosted 18th, Edarsenal won 18th hosted 19th. Just to confirm, I’m definitely NOT volunteering to host, just curious how it works.
|
Just checked, one of my possible noms has already won A Specialty hof, so that one's out..

Sent my nomination.

I also sent my nomination in, once again I chose a film predicated on it's anniversary

How long do these usually take to complete? I have a lot of free time coming up at the end of the month (endless days of movie watching) but wouldn't get to too many movies in this month.

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
Sorry. After I hit enter I noticed how bad/confusing that looked. Was hoping nobody caught it. I'm busy through October. I can still get a few movies in during October but come November, I have weeks with nothing to do.

I went ahead and typed out the full rules and procedures for the HoF. They are on the second post of this thread. That's the same general rules we've used for awhile now. If you have any questions? just ask! I'm always happy to help:) that's my job as host to help:p |

I legitimately can't think of a film I want to nominate. I feels like it's been ages since I've seen something that I really loved, or at least appreciated enough to want to share. So if anyone thinks they know of a film that I'd like, and it's something I can easily track down and watch this weekend, feel free to send me a PM or drop it in a post comment.
I guess I could always nominate an old favourite, but I think it's a bit boring to nominate classics that everyone's probably already seen. |

I guess I could always nominate an old favourite, but I think it's a bit boring to nominate classics that everyone's probably already seen. Just a thought, you could peruse the MoFo list and find some hidden gems there that not everyone has seen. I know I haven't seen much on the Roger Ebert Great Movies list and only 22% of the Cannes Winners list. |

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
And @CosmicRunaway, you DO pick some extraordinary films I haven't seen, so even if you went with a classic, there's a good chance I may not have seen it OR one that it had been AGES since I last saw it.
So, it'll all work out. |

Just about every movie I've ever nominated has been an old favorite and the few that weren't were movies that I probably wouldn't have watched if I never joined MoFo. I actually considered re-nominating the first film I ever nominated, since many of the people who are participating now weren't participating back then (or weren't even on MoFo yet). I ended up picking something else, but I might do it at some point. |

@Miss Vicky @edarsenal @Siddon @ahwell @john connor @Hey Fredrick @Frightened Inmate No. 2; @rauldc14 @cricket
The noms are up on the second post! Have a look-see. We've have 10 fine film nominations for the 20th HoF. I'm liking these movies:) I see the lovely Grace Kelly makes two appearances this HoF as does the equally lovely Shirley Jones. We have some heavy hitters, some beloved classics, some cool under scene films, an indie comedy, a Pixar and a musical who in the hell nominated that:D |
Nice mix of films I've seen before and first time watches.
Rewatches: Blood Diamond One of my favorites. I hope it does well. Cool Hand Luke I've seen this a couple of times before, but I honestly can't recall what I thought of it. Rear Window My favorite Hitchcock Ghostbusters A fun movie, but not a favorite. Monsters, Inc Love this movie, though I'd probably rank it somewhere in the middle of Pixar's films. First Time: The Music Man I'm going to hate this. No doubt about it. High Noon I have a rocky relationship with Westerns and I suspect I'm not going to like it. The Squid and The Whale I have no idea what I'm going to think of this. Blood Simple As much as I love The Big Lebowski and enjoy Burn After Reading, my history with Coen films is pretty spotty. I suspect I'll either dislike it or be indifferent to it. Elmer Gantry No idea what I'm going to think of this one. Phantom Thread I don't like Paul Thomas Anderson so I'm probably not going to like this. * * * For My Reference: Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick, 2006) IMDb 2 hours, 23 minutes / Source: My DVD Nominated by Me Rewatch? The only two I haven't seen are The Music Man, which actually sounds pretty good, and The Squid and the Whale, which I've always wanted to see. Out of the rest, there's nothing I'm dreading watching again and that is unusual.
|
There is 1 besides my own nomination that I consider a favorite.
|
My thoughts as the nominations came in were, 'yes! these are really good noms!'.
The Music Man (1962) this is my nom...Robert Preston makes the movie as the likable con man who comes to a quaint small town in 1912. He's there to dupe the people into buying goods they don't need, but he's a suave salesman and flim flams the townsfolk into buying a dream. In that way The Music Man is like Elmer Gantry. Yes this is a musical:cool: but it's not like the typical light farce musical. Here the songs are endemic to furthering the narrative and emphasizing the emotions of the scene. Cool Hand Luke (1967) Nobody does defiantly cool like Paul Newman! I've only seen this once and loved it. Blood Diamond (2006) I believe I watched this years ago when it first came to DVD, all I remember is that I liked it. Ghostbusters (1984) I seen this back in 1984 at the movie theater, along time ago. I can hardly remember the movie but now I have the Ghostbusters song stuck in my head. Good choice for October. Monsters, Inc (2001) I've enjoyed or at least appreciated all the Pixars I've seen. I haven't seen this one, so am glad I now have a chance. Rear Window (1954) Hitch, James Stewart, Thelma Ritter and the lovely Grace Kelly....what more do you need! This is a movie I can rewatch and each time appreciate it more. High Noon (1952) One of my all time favorite westerns and I've seen a LOT of westerns. Elmer Gantry (1960) This is a great film as I always like films that explore the complexities of con men, only this film is so refined that we're never sure if Elmer Gantry is a con man or is he just extremely motivated. I've not seen these two, so I'm glad they were nominated! Blood Simple (1984) Cool to have a Coen Bros film, the cast looks good and I'm looking forward to this. The Squid and The Whale (2005) I love indie films, they often can go where mainstream films don't. It looks intriguing and glad to be watching it. |

Three I haven't seen, not one I don't like/love. High Noon is top 3 Western of all time for me. Blood Simple very recently re-watched, high level Neo-Noir! Looking forward to all the re-watches and first time viewings, getting started right away. Watching Elmer Gantry tonight! |
So I was thinking of ways to get the conversation back into the HoFs. Back in the day we had some really good convo about the noms, lately not as much. So I had this idea:
Each week there will be a Movie of the Week and if anyone is interested they would watch that movie and discuss it. This would be totally optionally, so anyone can watch the movies in any order they want. But for me I'd be willing to try (when possible) to sync up viewing of the noms so that at least a couple of us could talk more about the movies and maybe have more fun. Any thoughts? Any one interested? |
http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walt...idandwhale.gif
The Squid and the Whale (Noah Baumbach, 2005) Imdb Date Watched: 10/07/19 Cinema or Home: Home Reason For Watching: 20th MoFo Hall of Fame, nominated by Frightened Inmate No. 2 Rewatch: No. I chose to kick off the 20th Hall of Fame with The Squid and the Whale because I hadn't seen it before and it was short. Unfortunately, it didn't feel short. It dragged on endlessly and I was utterly bored and annoyed by it. With the possible exception of Laura Linney's character - who was just really bland and forgettable - I ****ing hated everybody in this movie. The kids were horrible. The dad was horrible. The tennis coach/mom's boyrfriend was irritating. The student shacking up with the dad was equally so. They also all felt very one dimensional and incomplete (which is no surprise considering Baumbach co-wrote Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Fantastic Mr. Fox). By the time any of them started to redeem themselves (which was nearly at the end of the film), I was too disengaged to care. Making matters worse was that the film's attempt at humor fell flat for me - in much the same way that Wes Anderson's films do. And as I'm sitting here typing this, I'm trying to find a single aspect of the film that I found praiseworthy - and I'm failing. There is absolutely nothing that stood out to me here, at least not in a positive way. Not the performances. Not the screenplay. Not the cinematography. Not the music. Nothing. The closest I can get to praise is that I've seen a lot of movies that I hated more than this one. - |

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
Monsters, Inc.
I love Pixar. Which is probably pretty apparent since I already have hosted a Pixar Hall of Fame. But there's something about their style, their animation, their characters, their music, and everything that else that bring them right to the top of Animation Studios. Sure they've made garbage films (looking at you Brave and Cars Franchise), but most of their movie are totally amazing and Monsters, Inc. is no exception. Pete Docter behind Andrew Stanton is my favorite animated director, and Monsters, Inc. was his "sort-of" debut, since of course he wasn't the only director, and of course he had worked with Pixar before that as well. But it is truly a masterpiece in my eyes. The voice acting is great, Billy Crystal is perfect for Mike and John Goodman is great as Sully. Boo is adorable even though I'm not a huge fan of children in animation. It's funny, colorful, heartwarming, just everything you would expect from a Pixar movie. It doesn't do anything out of the ordinary for Pixar, which is why it's not my favorite of their movies. But it's a film that checks all the boxes of what you'd expect from a Pixar movie. I don't expect this to win, but it certainly deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame in my eyes. |
Re: 20th Hall of Fame
Interesting set of noms. I've seen most of them already surprisingly

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
Blood Diamond (2006)
Director: Edward Zwick Nominated by Miss Vicky Had been on the fence about ever seeing this, and now, with it being nominated by Vicky, I got me a very good feeling I'm going to be enjoying this one. Cool Hand Luke (1967) Director: Stuart Rosenberg Nominated by Edaresnal I've actually only seen this once, edited on Prime Time TV back as a kid when TV was three major networks and that's it. And when I saw it was never in one of these, that kinda sealed it for me to be a nom. Rear Window (1954) Director: Alfred Hitchcock Nominated by John-Connor A Classic that I never got to see completely and now I get to. Ghostbusters (1984) Director: Ivan Reitman Nominated by Siddon A great comedy that I've seen countless times and since it has been a while, I get to revisit The Music Man (1962) Director: Morton DaCosta Nominated by Citizen Rules "That's Pool and that starts with P and that rhymes with T and that spells TROUBLE". Haven't seen this since childhood, so I'll be in for a treat. High Noon (1952) Director: Fred Zinnemann Nominated by Rauldc14 THANK YOU Raul! An iconic western that every Western SHOULD see and I have not. I finally will! Monsters, Inc (2001) Directors: Pete Docter, David Silverman Nominated by Ahwell An old time favorite of mine and glad to get to revisit The Squid and The Whale (2005) Director: Noah Baumbach Nominated by Frightened Inmate No. 2 Have not heard of this so very curious to see what becomes of it. Blood Simple (1984) Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Nominated by Hey Fredrick One of the few Coen films I haven't seen so looking forward to it. Elmer Gantry (1960) Director: Richard Brooks Nominated by Cricket An old time heavy hitter that, like a few others here, I'll finally get to sit down and watch |
Re: 20th Hall of Fame
I'm not sure I've ever seen Gantry before myself, so I look forward to that the most currently. Well that and a Rear Window rewatch.

I have The Music Man on order at the library, so I hope it comes soon, though I never know for sure how long it will take. Maybe that can be a Week 2 MotW, (or whatever works for people.)
I do have The Squid and the Whale to watch tonight. So seeing how Miss Vicky has already watched it let's say: Week 1...Movie of the Week is The Squid and the Whale. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/c...g?format=1000w |

High Noon (Fred Zinneman, 1952) Imdb Date Watched: 10/07/19 Cinema or Home: Home Reason For Watching: 20th MoFo Hall of Fame, nominated by rauldc14 Rewatch: No. High Noon is a bit different than most films in that its events take place in real time. This is an interesting concept and it serves well to enhance a feeling of urgency and dread, but unfortunately that "real time" is less than 90 minutes. Now I'm not necessarily saying that I'd like it to be longer, but the time restriction leaves little room for character development. As such I didn't feel like I knew Kane at all and didn't really care one way or the other what became of him or the others. I could only muster a tiny sliver of sympathy when the people of his town - and even his bride - turned their backs on him. So, once again, I was pretty bored. But the final shootout was at least mildly interesting and I didn't particularly dislike any of the characters so I'll give it a very apathetic -. |

Elmer Gantry 1960 Directed by Richard Brooks This was the first time I've seen Elmer Gantry, it has been on my watch list ever since I checked out mark-f's top 100 list. I added it to my own 1960's favorite films list, I think I will place it somewhere between position #40 and 50. It's a big powerful movie with lots of thought provoking subjects in the story, that must have made an impact back in the 60's. Which makes me think why hasn't this movie appeared on my radar before, my guess would be that the European promotion and word of mouth on this movie has been kept low deliberately because of all the religious parties/powers that could possibly be affected in a negative way by this film. Burt Lancaster really shines in this film with his incredible performance displaying a full range of human emotion and abilities. I didn't know Burt could also sing that well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amznbi0lFaU The film and the Elmer Gantry character end strong and wise, showing that a man and his religion or his beliefs are a very personal journey and an introspective experience that is not meant for circus shows.

Seven of the noms will be rewatches. Two of them I have at 6/10 but haven't seen them in years so maybe they've aged well. The other five I have seen are all 8+ movies. Not bad.

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
High Noon certainly isn't for everybody so I can't say I'd be shocked with any bad ratings. I do think it's an extremely well made film though.

Anybody have a link for Blood Diamond? If not I can just get the DVD from Netflix.

Citizen, you mentioned a one week open door policy, so I might still try to come up with a nomination over the next few days. I had high hopes for a film I watched Saturday evening, but it wasn't as engaging as I was anticipating.
There are a couple more films I wanted to watch as potential nominations, but work has been an absolute nightmare lately, so I haven't really had the chance. My supervisor wants us to come in an hour earlier for the rest of the week as well (4am ), so hopefully I still have the mental energy by the time I get home haha. |

The Squid and the Whale
Well, it's hard to talk about this film. Not because of the personal experience or anything, my parents never divorced, but because it's such a non-plot-based film that it's hard to really analyze. It reminds me of The Florida Project in terms of its structure and pacing (not so much its material). I didn't like it as much as the Florida Project, but, after seeing it yesterday, I think it's been growing on me. None of the characters are all that great of course, and none of the acting is amazing. But this movie just stuck with me. I liked a lot of the script and dialogue scenes, especially with Walt. The story for the most part could have been handled better, but that's a minor complaint. The younger kid, Frank, is certainly weird and I could see him growing up to be a psychopath. I actually didn't like the Squid and the Whale analogy. It was stupid and although it obviously connected to the plot they could have done a better job. So, I know this has been a vague review, but I'm finding it hard to share what I think about this film. In the end, I really liked it. Not sure it'll be a favorite ever, but I liked it. Also: I loved the soundtrack! "School House Rock," wow that brought back deep childhood memories!:D - |

The Squid and the Whale 2005 Directed by Noah Baumbach A film about a family of two / three different types of people trying to co-exist in harmony. And a cat who clearly wasn't feeling any of these people. The characters and their individual stories weren't very likeable they were all kind of 4ssholes. With the exception of William Baldwins character who seemed like a pretty cool brother, the film leaves it in the middle if the guy is an actual 'philistine' or not. As an art/music/cinema lover there is still some relate-ability with some of the issues the dad and the older son experience. For example the in depth analysis of a film with references to writers and directors and that way excluding other people at the table from a conversation. Overall I thought the film was realistic, well acted, awkward at times, but gave some insight and food for thought. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YulxHcy54Ac |

https://www.movieforums.com/communit...chmentid=57633 The Squid and The Whale (2005) *spoilers* Somebody tell me what makes this movie special? Because I'm at a loss to see anything remarkable about it. To me it seems like a rather pedestrian film that focuses on adding in some cleverness and some tacked on provocative scenes in order to cover up the fact that the movie has really nothing to say. At least I liked the way it was filmed, the scene length and the personal feeling one gets when a steady cam is used in close quarters, suited the film. I liked the editing too, it was linear, thank goodness! The editing never became self aware or distracting to the film which is a good thing for this type of story. I even liked the actors. I thought they were cast well for the personality types they were playing. But was this comedy-drama funny....nope. I laughed once at something flippantly said by Jesse Eisenberg. And I liked his character the best, especially when he was dating and told the girl he wished she didn't have so many freckles...An OMG moment for sure and one that showed a spark of creativity by the writers. But I think what bugged me the most was all the lost chances that the script writers squandered. I mean the basic premise has tons of potential and it seemed during the freckle scene that we'd ultimately learn that even though his mom had ended the marriage with her affairs...the divorcee was really caused by his dad being so intellectually high tone and so lacking in human understanding and empathy. The writers could have explored that dynamic in the marriage via Eisenberg's character who seemed to be just as unemphatic as his dad. Well I guess they explored it a little but I felt unsatisfied with it as it could have been so much more. The movie is set back in 1986 to give it some 'coolness'. Only nothing about the events were endemic to the mid 80s, nor did the film even attempt at having an 80s vibe and look to it. Other than an old push button phone and some 80s cars the film didn't even look like it was from the 80s. Which to me feels like a cheap ploy to dress up a dull film. Same goes for the little kid who's always swearing, drinking and going topless for some reason, not to mention his self exploration...OK but what does this say about him? I kept thinking he would blow a fuse and end up dead or something. But nothing was derived from his colorful character other than just some quirkiness...then at the end credits I seen this name, Wes Anderson. |

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
You know what bothered me about The Squid and The Whale, besides the silly title....The damn Purell hand cleaner on the hospital room's wall.
That's why I used that photo. |
Yup, no 80's feel whatsoever.

Re: 20th Hall of Fame
I think The Squid and the Whale is about moments, small moments of life, much like the Florida Project (as I said in my review). I enjoyed that it explored characters that were different and ventured into territory that isn’t normal. However, it IS totally in the wrong era, and I’m pretty sure the only reason they set it in the 80s was so they could include that Blue Velvet scene.
It seems that people are looking for a typical plot in this film, and once you understand that it’s not a character analysis or rise-and-fall plot archetype I think it gets a lot better. |

Cool, that some of us are watching the same movie, around the same time, maybe this Movie of the Week idea might work out after all:p

"i didn't like any of the characters" is a funny criticism of the squid and the whale. it's the most searing indictment of the male ego i've ever seen, of course you shouldn't like the characters. i find every character in it to be loathsome on some level (except for maybe the children, but only because they are victims of their parents flaws), that's why it feels so honest

It's not really criticism nor saying it's 'a point' more stating what type / sort of characters we are shown in the movie.
