Alain Resnais, one of the most prominent and important French filmmakers over the last fifty years, has died at age 91.

Here is the report confirming his death.

This is very sad news. Resnais is known for many films, some of them being the ambitious documentary on the horrors of the Holocaust Night and Fog, Hiroshima mon amour, Last Year at Marienbad, Muriel and Je t'aime, je t'aime. He played an imperative role in the French New Wave movement, and his work in the 50s and 60s broke the very conventions of storytelling and pushed the boundaries of where a film can go and how it can be told.

His latest film, Life of Riley, was released only this year. An amazing accomplishment to still shoot a feature film at 91 years of age. Still, he will perhaps be most recognised and remembered for his seminal work in the 50s and 60s, arguably at the peak of the French New Wave movement and an incremental contributor to it. His films generally pushed the boundaries and even bended storytelling conventions, and for that, he will be remembered. In my opinion, one of the most overlooked French filmmakers, right up there with Louis Malle.
