In, I'll think of a nom in the coming days.

Siddon 07-28-20 07:49 AM

I'm thinking about being a late signup...I've got a long list of possible noms and I want an idea of what this Hall is going to look like before submitting.

I think I've settled on my nomination now. I had a short list going, but had to crossed two of them off because I felt they were too similar to other people's noms.

Your noms do pretty good and I've respected most and loved some of them, so you're doing something right in picking a nom.

I'm considering it. I haven't really watched any films outside of the ones nominated in other HoFs lately, so I don't really have anything in mind.

I'm rounding up a few films to watch over the course of the week, so we'll see if anything stands out.

Just got raul's nomination. It's shaping up to be an interesting and diverse HOF. The lowest rated nominee on IMDb is 7.2/10.

My most likely option is indeed slightly lower than that. Still thinking 1) do I have any other options and 2) how many NHL games I'll be watching once the playoffs start on Saturday.

Mines on that lower end. I'll be surprised if it does well, but I really like it and I think a few others will too. I'm not sure how many have seen it.

It was a tough call, I almost went with a few other movies but I can always switch them out a different time

Meds and Cosmic get with the program and join :)

CosmicRunaway 07-31-20 12:01 PM

I watched a potential nomination yesterday, and one the day before as well, but I wouldn't want to go with either of those films. One is them is probably a bit too new anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to watch or revisit this evening, but I have no plans this weekend so I have plenty of time. Wish me luck finding something I want to nominate, since I'll probably need it haha.

It's actually only been out for a few weeks, as a VOD rental. Maybe I'll nominate it for something next year when it's more widely available and on more streaming services, assuming there's the right group of people for it. I don't imagine it's going to have mass appeal.

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

Alright, I've got 2 first viewings and 2 rewatches lined up. Hopefully something sticks out in this batch.

If worst comes to worst, I guess I could always just shuffle my DVDs and pick something at random to nominate, but I picked up a lot of trash when the local HMV went out of business a couple years ago, so I don't think anyone wants me going with that option haha.

If you run out of ideas, you could go with another fantasy film. Or the random shuffle pick from your DVD stash might be interesting!

I wanted to give people plenty of time to decide on a nom and finish other HOFs. Plus I wanted to start it on a weekend because of my work schedule and this weekend would have been too soon.

I do like these tournaments - have led me to so many films that I wouldn't have watched otherwise.

For some reason, I thought the reveal was this weekend and late nomination deadline the next, but it seems I have another week to ponder this HoF, my nomination, and the universe in general.

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I may participate but it would depend on a few factors.. .

MovieGal makes 9.

CosmicRunaway 08-01-20 07:07 PM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

So those four films were a bust. One was a film I didn't really like that much the first time I saw it, but I wanted to like it more, if that makes sense. I was hoping a rewatch would make it click like Blue Ruin did, but that wasn't the case. Maybe if I come back to it in a few more years, the third time will be the charm haha.

rauldc14 08-02-20 05:42 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

Good Lord there has to be something. I can always nominate something for you lol.

I've been completely opposite of that. I have at least 10 films I want to nominate in a Hall someday and just picking between the 10 is tough. I went pretty lighthearted this time and picked something that I normally wouldn't for a general.

CosmicRunaway 08-02-20 06:18 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

Yeah, I don't know what happens to my brain when it comes time to decide on a nomination, since even films I previously liked don't seem to impress me much. It often makes me wonder if I even like movies any more. But then once the HoF starts, I usually enjoy most of the films so I know that's not the case.

I'm probably just too hard on the films I consider nominating, but I'd like to find something I genuinely want to share with you guys.

rauldc14 08-02-20 06:28 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

Strangely I've nominated 4 of my top 10 in my profile. You would think more

CosmicRunaway 08-02-20 07:17 AM

Is that a subtle hint that I should just nominate one of my favourite films? haha

Which reminds me that one of the films I have on my profile keeps disappearing for some reason (this is the third time), and now I can't remember what I had there. They weren't actually my "top 10 of all time" or anything, since I've never tried to rank my favourites, but rather the first ten films that came to mind that I really liked.

rauldc14 08-02-20 07:42 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I like a few of them!

rauldc14 08-02-20 07:46 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I'm not sure how you'll feel about mine Cosmic this go around. I have a feeling you won't care for it.

Again, I think Ahwell stands the best chance of living it. Well and Meds if he joins.

CosmicRunaway 08-02-20 08:44 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I've been watching primarily darker, vaguely depressing films lately, so something lighthearted would probably be a nice change of pace for me, even if I don't ultimately like it haha.

Sarge 08-02-20 09:51 AM

I just nominate a film that I like and want to watch again.

My nom doing well doesn't overly bother me as I like it regardless, I am just interested to know what others think.

That and so I know who's opinion on movies I value and who's I don't ;)

Yeah, that's what I do. If I don't want to rewatch a movie, then I usually won't nominate it.

I have a text file on my computer of possible HoF noms, it must have a couple hundred movies. My problem is that there's not enough HoFs for all my movies to ever be used.

MovieGal 08-02-20 11:49 AM

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I picked a film I had seen that I thought was good enough for any major HOF. However, the content of the film I think fits my taste. It was the first thing I thought of and made sure it wasn't in any other HOF. It is completely me, to someone who really knows me. Its a beautiful film but a hard pill to swallow. And the director, it is his first film. It has amazing actors as well.

My only fear is there may be many films nominated that I won't enjoy. I guess I will have to give them a try or rewatch them and be honest of what I think or if it's changed my mind. .

Looking at all the HOF Winners - not specialty... there are over 1/2 that I would not be interested in ... but again, we each have a unique taste in cinema.

2nd Inglorious Bastards

Let me add the 10th - Empire Strikes Back.. At first, I thought it was one of Episode 1, 2 or 3, which along with 7, 8 and 9 are terrible.

Just for fun...of those I've seen all but The 400 Blows. I really liked all the rest, except the two Tarantino films.

I do enjoy French cinema and am a fan of Truffaut, for what I have seen of his.

I was just thinking the other day I should see more of Truffaut as I haven't seen many. I do have Alphaville ready to watch.

Whoops, Alphaville is Godard.

You have seen a french director's American films... I'm sure you have seen "Fahrenheit 451" (Truffaut) and "Pretty Baby" (Malle).

Sorry I should say English speaking films.

I always do.

Usually I just bring up my top 100 and pick one of them. The film I picked this time isn’t on that list, but if I ever make another one it will be.

ahwell 08-02-20 01:06 PM

Yep, I pick a favorite too. It’s more my “top 150” actually, but this time it was something in my 100.

I've seen both of those. Pretty Baby was pahaK's nom for the 21st. It finished last, but I really liked it. We had another Truffaut film, Day For Night (La nuit américaine) in the 17th HoF. It didn't do well either, but it was one of my favorites in that HoF.

If I had to pick a french film for a HOF.. it probably would be a French Nouvelle Extémité director.

I think I've barely scratched the surface of any one specific French Director and would love to delve deeper into Jean Renoir. I discovered him along with the actor Jean Gabin at the same time and would LOVE to see more of him, as well.

With the generals I've joined in I've really enjoyed or flat out love:

12th Casablanca
13th Dances With Wolves
15th The Station Agent
17th The Innocents
18th Road To Perdition (which also doubled as the first time a nom of mine placed first in a Generals HoF)
19th Pulp Fiction
20th Phantom Thread
21st The Hunt
22nd Inglorious Basterds

With choosing noms, I've done a lot of times with favorites or older favorites I haven't seen in far too long and I've only picked two of my top ten as noms.
I have also came across some great Blind Grabs of unknowns and a few Must Sees.

As far as Cosmic's Top Nine, I've seen them all and love 'em all with The Re-Animator being one I haven't seen in a few decades and should see again.

Sarge 08-02-20 06:31 PM

I picked a favourite of mine.

All of the ones that I considered are in my top 20

I could never put together a top 100 film list. It's too hard when you have seen as many I have in my "slightly over a half-century". My parents loved cinema. I grew up watching movies all the time. I can say my HOF choice would be in that top 100 because it is memorable but where it would fit would be hard to say. My top 10 here isn't really my top 10 films of all time, they are just films I enjoy.

A top 100 would be hard for me to do, hell I can't even remember what all I've seen? I don't keep a log so it's not uncommon for me to totally forget I've seen a movie.

Same! Also, since my favourite films are not necessarily the ones I think are technically the best, I wouldn't know how to approach ranking them. Should you put a perfectly executed film you like a little less above or below one you enjoy more despite its many flaws?

I'd find it hard enough to make a genre-specific list, let alone one for what I consider to be the all-time best, or my absolute favourites. I have a hard enough time ranking the HoF nominations haha.

I always consider personal enjoyment above all else when ranking any list - that goes for favorites lists, countdowns, and the Hall of Fame.

As to not being able to remember favorites, I don't really have that issue. If I love a movie enough to to call it a favorite, then I buy it on bluray or DVD so I just look through my collection and choose from that.

Re: 23rd MoFo Hall of Fame

I use icheckmovies.com to keep a log of the filmes I watched and favourited. Besides, I have my own Top100 done there also, so it's easy to find favourites or to find good nominations to these HoFs.

Regarding the making of a Top 100, my personal preference comes before the inherent value of a film. And while I see why people struggle to order a Top 100, I never find it problematic at all. I just admit from the starting point that the order is not definite and just go film to film. There are definitely entire bits of my Top that I have ordered, like my top 12 are definitely better than the 15 after and so on.

Back to the subject of this Hall of Fame, it turns out that I'm off this Saturday so we're looking at about a 10:00 a.m. reveal (Pacific Time).

Sounds good. I like it when 10 am, means 10am (I'm on the west coast too and other time zones usually throw me off)

It's crazy how much anticipation there always is for both the reveal and the results. Love these HOFs!
