I’ve only been playing since May but I am thoroughly addicted. Practicing about 1-2 hours a week, and I wish I had more time to afford it.

Figured it’d be cool to have a place to chat guitars.

Peavey JF-1

But this Alvarez AD30 has the majority of my focus.

EDIT: And who knows? Maybe Santa will bring me an electric :D

So who else plays? Tag em. Let’s get some pictures up in here. Tips, tricks, generally badassarey.

This week I'm learning Sweet Euphoria, by Chris Cornell on an '81 Takamine F-375sw.

doubledenim 08-21-20 02:29 AM

I’ve become fascinated by Billy Strings. Seeing somebody shred an acoustic is mesmerizing. I don’t even have to ask to know that Rick Rubin loves him.

Dust in a Baggie with the green shirt guy is a moment and Away from the Mire may be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.

Just as usual, I pick my guitar from time to time to play some Black Metal tunes.

And I also improvise quite a bit and record myself playing & singing to send @Swan. He even mixed in some of this into his electronic music!

Here is a little chord practice: A, C, and D

I was testing my audio recorder last night to see how it sounds, and I think it sounds damn good.

Next up, Try working on switching smoothly between two of the chords, making sure all the notes ring out clearly etc.

Lastly, when are you cashing in your free video lesson with me? I would love to do it! Seriously!

1975 Guild F50 - Cracked and resealed multiple times. Sounds amazing.

And a couple of my electrics...

2001 Charvel A Plus Pro - Mahogany body, birdseye maple neck, ebony fret board. Sorry the case is so dirty. I transferred my Charvel into my old 1992 Jackson case after I traded the Jackson away. The case is old, but it has all my bumper stickers, backstage passes, & random stickers on it! ;)

2020 Charvel DK24 Dark Amber - Mahogany body, maple neck, maple fret board. Only pic I have on my phone; I am at work right now, so I can't snap a proper one until I get home later. Will post more pics of this gem soon!

Also have a 2003 Ibanez S470DXQMCN and a 2003 Ibanez SZ 520. No pics available of mine, so I will post some web pics until I can update.

Yeah, I was just testing the recorder more than anything.

My teacher has given me an exercise to switch between three different chords, but it's getting kinda old so I may have him give me another one so I can spice up my practice. I also have a run exercise that I have been neglecting, so I need to work on that, too.

And soon! When is best for you? I will work my schedule to fit yours.

I have a lesson on Saturday, so do you just wanna plan for Sunday?

And I am flexible on the platform. Skype, Facetime, whatever. Just no ****ing Zoom.

Best video quality is probably Jitsi or Discord.

@ynwtf wanted to hear me play. Here's the first part of the first song I linked.

https://voca.ro/eYx0t0oIGV1

Playing on time was always the hardest thing to me. Probably has to do with the fact I never practice with a metronome or a backing track and end up learning the song in 11/23 time signature.

Hi here's my Custom Gibson B.B. King Edition Serie Gold. Bought it 10 years ago 3500$ and keep it new until that time. White Stickers still on it. Took out of the case only 5 times, i use to play with my Ibanez insthead.

Sorry it was first saying Gibson Les Paul but it was just an automatic cell phone corrector... Of course it was easy to see it's not a les paul...

^^^^ Wins the thread.

Mr Minio 08-30-20 05:56 PM

I love to just pick up my guitar and play some improvised black metal stuff without thinking much. That's how I come up with some nice riffs. The third riff is really badass, just have to practice some more and play it tighter.

https://voca.ro/cHzGAl9bqMK

I really love this improvisational approach, so even when I'm composing an actual song, and only have two or three riffs in my head, I would play them for a while, and then go full improv to see where this takes me. Everything in the following recording is improvised safe for the first two riffs. The first two riffs reappear from time to time to kind of build the structure of the song. The stuff at 2:06 is improvised, and I really love some of these melodies I came up with on a spot!

https://voca.ro/gMbcyqanxBo

So that's my approach to guitar playing and making songs. I just have lots of fun and don't really care much about technical perfection.

Anyway, afterwards I got bored with kvlt and br00tal music like black metal, so decided to improvise some mild melodies. Kinda f*cked up towards the end, because the idea I had was apparently too hard for me to play out of the box, and I kept looking for the right notes and fingering, but it's a good idea that deserves to be saved.

https://voca.ro/h9ZpC5kqNRV

ynwtf 09-03-20 02:57 AM

alright alright alright.
No pics of my actual guitars, but here's a run down:

2004ish Gibson SG Special Faded
This was the first guitar I bought. I had an old black Yamaha R-something or another my dad got me in high school but it was falling apart by this time. This SG is still probably my goto, favorite feeling guitar. The neck is just perfect to me.
https://images.reverb.com/image/uplo...bluylhwety.jpg

Late 90s semi-hollow DeArmond Starfire Special (red)
Great story on these DeArmonds and how they were discontinued. Be sure to google them if you're curious. I first learned of them around 2003 and have wanted one since. I was lucky to pick this up off eBay maybe around 2010 before the prices started getting silly.

2018 Fender Limited American Tele (Sherwood Green Metallic)

https://davesguitar.com/wp-content/u...B-768x1104.jpg

2018 Gretsch 135th Anniversary G5420t (Cherry/Casino Gold)
Funny enough, I found this used at Guitar Center and they didn't know it was the anniversary model. Because of that, they had it priced way low as a regular, used, G5420. This one still had the cardboard marketing spacers under the bridge, so I'm sure it had never been used. Win/win on this one. When I play this one, I just feel like I know what I'm doing. Even though I really don't.

2016 Epiphone EJ-200CE (Natural)

https://d1aeri3ty3izns.cloudfront.ne...00/preview.jpg

1981 Takamine F-375SW
Found this on Craigslist last month, of all places. Sounds great. Plays great. Looks great. I could never afford a real Martin, but this clone is a great imposter. I'd buy another if I could find it at the low price I did this one. Hell, I could probably get 4 for the cost of the one Martin it emulates. Those things are crazy =\ The "W" in the call-letters stands for wood. I didn't realize this at first, but after examining the guitar I noticed that all the fretboard dot inlays, bindings, string pegs, and strap peg are all natural wood rather than plastic or mother of pearl. That's kind of neat, I thought.

https://images.reverb.com/image/uplo...sqntzp7g74.jpg

doubledenim 09-03-20 09:37 AM

Never afford a real Martin? What kind of Martin do you want? Mine is a bottom end and it was around $500 in the late 90s.

I’m sure this one isn’t cheap and ol’ Billie Strings is just driving up the price.

Here's an Atmospheric Black Metal song I composed back in February:

Rotten Oak - And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness

https://vocaroo.com/cNBXr9z1aGA

As you can see, all you need to write a five-minutes-long Atmospheric Black Metal song is a catchy atmospheric riff, and a different riff to break the monotony. Nothing else. The funny thing is I no longer remember how to play it, so if I wanted to play it now, I'd have to relearn it by ear listening to my own recording of it. :D

Sorta thinking of starting guitar lessons. I wonder if committing to paying for lessons would help me care more for the scales and theory side. That's something I never bothered with ..on guitar. Playing by ear is fine, I know my fretboard enough to get around, but I know my formal technique sucks. I can't solo for crap.

Re: The Guitar Guild

I turned my back on a 90s/00s model of the coveted DeArmond M75t that I've been wanting for the past 15 years or so. Price seemed too high considering it didn't have the original case and the tone knobs had been replaced. Other than that, it seems just fine. Guitar Center's used department via their webpage is pretty great for finding deals from time to time. In all honesty, the price is fine for a good guitar WITH a hard shell case if anyone is interested. I'm just coming at it more as a collector and would like the hard to find case with it. Still a great guitar and the prices are only creeping up.

You should it. I don’t do well with teaching myself, let around reading music. Last song I tried to learn was...

and like any song, I just end up picking 7 Bridges Road after a while and pat myself on the back.

Got myself a relatively cheap Juarez acoustic guitar. I wasn't keen on spending a lot on my first.

With the help of the kind folks on YouTube I intend to embark on this wonderful journey.

Ok here’s my other obsession in life other than movies. I’ve been playing for 28 years, can’t read music at all but play by ear pretty well. Nothing like cranking these to full volume after a frustrating day at work.

You can never have too many guitars. Roll on Christmas day for the new addition. Maybe I’ll post a picture here after Christmas.

Since my 2 kids came along, making music has been depressingly sparse. I did start up again before the pandemic.

-downloaded reaper software (free and amazing DAW)
-Got one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Focusrite-S...ag=googhydr-21
-Got a midi keyboard and started writing and recording some instrumental stuff.

But again, plans got waylaid as I just don't have the time. Any free time is spent gorging on movies naturally.

Good luck with using YouTube. It’s a great tool for learning. The only problem I find is you can learn a new song, then on a different video someone will play it a completely different way. It’s just up to you to fathom out which one sounds correct.

Thanks man. I know what you mean. Everyone has different ways, especially with chords.

I am following one of those free 30 days guitar courses by an Indian bloke named Adit Kundra. Good man taught everything from the basics like even the anatomy of the instrument, frets, strings, posture, etc. Useful for an absolute novice like me.

In addition to that I am also using Yousician. Very decent app so far.

I have promised myself to take things slowly and not rush through this. I know that can be so tempting, wanting to learn the complex things (or a song) before mastering even the basic exercises.

Put in four hours of work today. My left forefinger and middle finger's tips are hurting but man it feels so satisfying - a feeling I am told might not last once things start to get frustrating :p

lol, yeah. I half considered warning you about cramping up and callouses forming on your finger tips but figured you probably already discovered that ;) it does go away when the skin toughens up a bit.

good job on starting and committing! as long as you're having fun with it, you can't really do any wrong. keep everyone posted on your progress?

Somedays you’ll get frustrated with the guitar and others you’ll get a real buzz from it. Usually after a short break from playing I get really eager. Even Hendrix quoted he hated the thing from time to time.

The more you play guitar the less cramping you will get and your finger tips will harden up so there’ll be no pain.

I’ve never got too in depth with the theory side of things but everyone is different. Some feel the need to try and master the guitar. Some guitar greats can’t even read music and just do their own thing. I’m more motivated to learn songs rather scales and theory. Play till your heart's content but when you need a break take some time off. Good luck.

Glad to see this thread getting some love! Keep it up y’all. I am loving it all.

I finally broke down and bought me an electric. I had been eyeing this particular one at my local local shop all year long. I knew I wanted it but I was waiting to see if my interest was going to wane. Keep in mind just about every hobby I have ever started I have given up after a couple months. Drove my parents insane as a kid by jumping around from so many things. Well, I may suck but music, specifically the guitar, has held my interest longer than anything. That’s when I knew I needed it. :D

https://youtube.com/watch?v=T_WSXXPQYeY

This is the type of music I grew up on as a little kid, and rockabilly is still my favorite genre of music. I didn’t see any sense in getting a standard electric since that 50s sound is what I am after. And as soon as I heard it I grinned so big because I knew this is the guitar for me. At least for the next 5 years. ;D

This is the type of music I grew up on as a little kid, and rockabilly is still my favorite genre of music. I didn’t see any sense in getting a standard electric since that 50s sound is what I am after. And as soon as I heard it I grinned so big because I knew this is the guitar for me. At least for the next 5 years. ;D
This guitar looks killer. These types of guitars are great for pretty much any type of music, even hard rock. My Gretsch has a centre block in it so it’s not completely hollow. This is to help with feedback problems when using distort. People think you can only play a certain style on certain guitars but that’s not true. My Gretsch and Ibanez semi acoustics pictured in this thread are great all rounders.

Chris Cornell rocked a signature ES-335 and, IMHO, he is a rock legend.

I love the look and sound of a semi-hollow body guitar. They're loud enough you can noodle around with them without an amp and still hear everything you're playing.

Nice guitar, McClane.

I only use a few pedals and as you can see I do like the Boss brand. Extremely robust and easy to use. I do have effects on my amp but rather than programming them into my amps memory and using a channel changer, I find an external pedal more convenient to use. Other than a tremolo which I don’t yet have (great for blues) this is all I’ll ever need. I’m not one for a mass pedal board.

Yeah, I agree about the style of play capable from these. I just know right off the shelf this gets me closest to the sound without too much extra on my part. The humbuckers on this model are acceptable, but I can see myself replacing them sooner rather than later. This one also has a center block as well, but I am loving that semihollow sound.

Also, I finally have an excuse to pick up some Orange gear. :D

Few days in and I am reasonably satisfied with my progress. Tried to play couple of songs (Yesterday, Faded, Nothing Else Matters) with little success. Placed my ego aside and moved onto nursery rhymes :p . I can now play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Happy Birthday and Old MacDonald.
I must add that I am using a pick and playing the basic versions. There are couple of YouTube channels which provide those.

Today I worked on Yousician's Celine Dion Titanic number. Again the basic one. And it was worthwhile.

As for the issues. There is only one, and I thought I could best explain it with a meme. So made one.

I have always have flashbacks to my N64 days when I pick up a guitar. “Uh, what is this?” :rotfl:

@WrinkledMind I have been learning Old English melodies and would suggest you check out those for some easy to learn stuff. Plus, they are true classics for a reason. I love me some Greensleeves.

I’m working on memorizing that, Silent Night, and We Three Kings at the moment.

Learn this barre chord and you will be able to play so many songs. It can be played on any fret to give you any major chord. Remove finger 2 and this will give you the minor equivalent. It will kill you hand to start with but this chord will open up a whole new world.

Just looked up tabs for Silent Night. It's perfect. Will keep Greensleeves in my list. Thanks.
And yes, the sound of guitar on those basic tunes reminds me of old video games as well 😁.

This is pretty cool!
Just found this and wanted to join in.
Firstly, here's my lil backroom baby:
https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca88...gHA9zSv-pblrMM
An A-90 Rogue Dreadnought. She's basically a starter guitar that I picked up about 4 yrs ago for about $65. She's got a great mid-range, holds a tune forever, and ideal for the fingerstyle Blues I've been delving into recently. AND I don't have to be afraid of being a newbie and bumping her about, which I have over the few years I've had her. Re-callousing my fingers whenever I drift off in practicing/learning.

A little backstory for those interested:
I've always wanted to learn to play guitar throughout my life. In fact, in Second Grade (1972) my mom bought me an old guitar from one of the nuns at my grade school who taught music. It was pretty huge for me and my tiny, short fingers, and soon after I grew discouraged and it went into storage in a closet.
Just over five years ago, my father died. He was 90 yrs old and while the family was going through the attic and assessing the mass of things that have accumulated over the past 60 yrs or so, I found that guitar.
https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca88...wB8sBl1UXcHA6E
A JOM Mexican-made guitar with 3 of the original nylon strings still on it. The case had deteriorated pretty badly and there were some minor structural issues but she still held a lovely tone.
I was equal parts elated to see it still around and very ashamed and heartbroken that this creature of music was left abandoned for over 40yrs. In the dark.
So I went to a couple of guitar stores to see if it could be given some tender attention; knowing that this was my time to finally learn and I would begin my sojourn with her.
But each place claimed it would cost more than she was worth to restore her and I was pretty broke and did not have the cash to say "Don't care. She deserves another chance to be played. I owe it to her."
So, I scraped to get the Rogue and I keep her propped up in my bedroom for the day that I have the money and come across someone with a love for old guitars who understand the sentimentality I have and is overjoyed to give her that new life she deserves. Kind of like The Island of Lost Toys in Rankin/Bass' Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Meanwhile, I play, I learn. I'm in the beginning stages of Intermediate and since a 6 day work week does not allow time to go to a teacher, I've wandered through YouTube for a number of excellent lessons and followed them to their own sites to expand. Learning and finding a wonderful home in Fingerstyle while bouncing about from Spanish to Classical to some Piedmont style Blues with a couple of Lesson Books I've picked up recently while bookmarking other sites that I had discovered some excellent lessons and online teachers.

In my genesis of learning, I have noticed that touching base in various styles/genres of music really opens up the process and where one may bring up that eventual wall we all come to know, another will give you that certain something to aid you in moving beyond it.

Well, off to practice.
Wonderful to see ya all!

Touching story. I hope you find someone to do it justice one day.

I still have my original electric guitar that my parents bought me for my 16th birthday. Even though I have a collection of guitars that are quite expensive, this starter guitar was probably relatively cheap in comparison. I still play it today and even though I have sold a couple of guitars in the past for better models, this I could never part with. 26 years I’ve had the guitar for. It’s the black Strat pictured earlier on in this thread.

I can also thank my Dad for introducing me to some great Delta blues players. Robert Johnson, Skip James, Son House. I love the raw acoustic stuff.

It probably does! I tend to stick with fairly basic, stripped down tones for the most part. I chose this unit because the distortions were really good for a unit in this price range, as I can't really crank up tube amps etc. where I live. This thing models Marshall, ENGL, Mesa, Soldano et. al. pretty well, so I am happy with it. The PC interface allows for really easy experimentation without having to drill down into a bunch of menus on the unit itself, something I have had to deal with in the past with outer gear.

Blackstar Fly 3
The best sounding micro amp I have come across. I have added a CD case so you can get an idea of true size. I have seen people busk with these here in the UK. I sometimes use this if I just want a 10 min practice. Great clarity for a 3 watt amp.

Or double up on sound with the extension cab.

I've been mulling over the idea of an amp. I really want a Fender Blues variant but I don't want the volume OR the hit to my wallet. I've sat on that fence for YEARS. I have considered the Pig Nose, Fender and Vox micros but haven't really been that impressed and kind of dismissed them all as novelty. That Blackstar does sound pretty good tho.

From little to large. This is my 50 watt which I’m sure my neighbour loves. Strange she has put her house up for sale recently. Funny that. This is the best amp I have owned. I got fed up of buying amps that start to crackle when you adjust the volume/gain. The components on this are of very high standard. No problems here.

These are also worth considering. Not too loud and great sounding for size. Battery or mains operated.

Always something very special about that first guitar. Nearly any guitarist I've ever known keeps a special place for that first one and you always hear the affection in their voice when they talk about it.

The Orange Crush Mini I ordered got lost in the mail, so I’m back to looking at what I want to do amp wise.

I went down to the local local shop today and was about to get a Rage 258 (I also considered the Bandit 112) when I eyed a 6505 amp head and cab covered in dust. No, no, I didn’t buy it but it stopped me from buying one of those combos because, long story short, he said he would knock the price down 25% for the 6505 head and cabinet.

I’m doing research now 😅

EDIT: I’d be an idiot if I bought that 6505 head/cab now, so it’s a toss up between the Rage and the Bandit. He’s pushing the Vypyr series pretty hard, but I dunno.

EDIT 2: Well, after everything I’ve read I will go with my first choice and get the Bandit 112. I can drive a cab with it later down the road, so I think it’s definitely the best choice to grow into and I just love that Peavey sound.

I’m surprised by some of the negative stuff I have read online. For their price point their stuff is built like a tank. I have the Max 112 bass amp and I just loooove the tone.

EDIT 3: I came home with the Bandit 112 today. :D You can even still see the shop dust!

Oh yeah, most definitely. Thankfully it has a power level switch on the back (25%, 50%, and 100%), but even set at 25% it can get stupid, stupid loud. I was fiddling around with the tone options and damn near blew an eardrum out. :D

Yeah, it's seriously wayyy more than I need right now, but I'll grow into it. Better to learn with an amp I could use at a live show if I ever get good and get over my crippling fear of performing in front of others. Plus, it is a tank, so there's no reason it shouldn't last 15-20 years. It would have been far cheaper to buy a used one, but the used guitar gear in my area is either stupid expensive or cheap trash. Besides, I want to put my own scuffs/history on it. :D

I get mental blocks playing in front of others. You can know a song so well but performing infront of people can be a different ball game.

Ooo, cool thread. I started back in September. Initially on the cheapest crappiest, classical guitar that I got for free, but it was enough to give me the bug - something like this:

Then as I got into it I got myself a Squier Strat, which I love:

And looking at getting a Yamaha FS830 in the new year:

I’ve never had any desire to perform, but just like the cliche request of a comedian, people tend to ask you to play for them. Do something for me they cry!

Whenever we would have “weekends” I would bring my guitar around and even drag the amp along. Strictly for after-after hours weird. Like playing with the tire gauge and spoon extravaganza stuff.

During operating hours, patrons may have seen the Stepthru Martin or heard the tales and ask for a performance. Me being the well-adjusted person I am, did not tire of this immediately. What would happen is a skit, that I envision could be found on the cutting-room floor of Spinal Tap.

I would agree to perform and begin setting up. Tuning the guitar, adjusting the soap-bar pickup, adjusting the tone, peeling off a quick little burn to stoke the crowd....and then starting the process over again, insisting it wasn’t quite right, but I was gonna make sure it was purrfect, just for them 😏

It use to make me so happy, especially when the ones that knew what was gonna happen played along.

”Nap on the Floor (of the Liquor Store)” was about the best you could hope for.

I wrote a song for @Swan. Him being my best friend et al, I think he deserves a little mention. In this song I'm trying to show him my appreciation of our friendship through my substandard singing and guitar playing.

WARNING! The song contains profanity, although not directed at Swan but at that assh*le sadness.
