Fallen - I liked this interms of a single viewing it really doesn't have to much to offer after that for me at least.
Fantastic Four - If this wasn't bad enough they had to make a sequal that somehow made this look like a masterpiece that no easy feet.
Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - for me this is the best of the bunch
Gridiron Gang - I'm a rock fan so yeah i like it
Jumper - the rep this film has gotten has been quite harsh over the last couple of years I throughly enjoyed it nothing to original or creative but good entertainment
Kingdom - Intense film really caught me off guard. The part were the unit is driving on the highway and they get ambushed is beautifully paced and increasingly thrilling.
L.A. Confidential - One of the best films of all time.
Out of Time - I remember being so excited by the trailer of this movie and then being so let down by the film. I recently rewatched it seeing if my view had changed it hadn't.
Red Eye - what's this one like ?
Secret Window - should have been a whole lot better in the end it's a decent suspense.
Shooter - Warning action fan here! waiting for sequal
Taking of Pelham One Two Three - Watch the original. This is good but nothing compared to it.
War of the Worlds - I love the way Spielberg keeps everything close to his hip pocket never really giving you what you want. it's almost as if he's testing you to see how many imes he can get away with dissapointing you.
We Own the Night - Check out Narc. I think you'll dig it.
World Trade Center - Oliver Stone's done much much better if you liked this one I recommend almost anything else he's done.

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

It is find of ironic that you chose to comment on the majority of my bottom tier movies of my collection

of the ones you've mentioned, I'm only a big fan of Jumper, Red Eye, Shooter, and L.A. Confidential

Red Eye is just a solidly fun movie. No it isn't the greatest hour and a half of cinema, but it is a fun movie to watch.

World Trade Center, Out of Time, Taking of Pelham 123, and Gridiron Gang are decent collection items I suppose.

The rest are in my bottom 15 of movies owned.

I've enjoyed most if not all of wes craven's stuff in some way or another yet I have yet to see Red Eye. Looks interesting.

Partly why I choose those films, is because that is what I found to be some of the more unique choice of your dvd collection. Partly as well I own quite a few of them and didn't feel like commenting on stuff I already own. And Partly mentioning certain others for lack of a better word would be redundent they already get there fair or more than fair share of praise.

Of the ones you own I own these
Bone Collector
Bourne Supremacy
Casino Royale
Collateral
Dark Knight
Deja Vu
Fourty Year Old Virgin
Gran Torino
Heat
I am Legend
I Robot
Independence Day
LA Confidential
Man on Fire
Million Dollar Baby

Pursuit of Happyness
Platoon
Prestige
Rain Man
Royal Tenenbaums
Seven
Shawshank Redemption
Silence of the Lambs
Stranger than Fiction
Traffic
Transformers
Troy
Unforgiven
V for Vendetta

I have to add a lot more strong films to make my collection look good......there are some movies that I have that aren't necessarily "worthy" of being in a good collection but I bought them because I hadn't seen them before or they were a gift.

I own a lot of movies that people would scough at. I think they all have there place. Over the years I've gotten ride of some but many have remand. Some you find for cheap some are given to you as you said. Everyones taste are different which is a good thing. Don't be swayed by others. Choose your movies based purely around your own taste because in the end your the one who will be watching them.

One of the toughest decisions I make now which I would have liked to have done when I first got into collecting dvd's. I would buy a movie on dvd that I loved but here's the kicker I wouldn't nesscaraly watch that film more than 2 or 3 times at most a hand full of times including commentary. I've been collecting dvd since the christmas of 1998 my first dvd was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. More than 10 years have passed and I can honestly say i've probably watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 3 or 4 time that's it.

I know tend to look at what i'm buying based off of how great the repeatability quality of the movie is rather than it being within my top hundred or what have you from an owning point of view. As an example I own James Buelishi's K-9. It hasn't even been two years and I've already watched at least 3 times that I can remember and had it on in the backgroung a few other times.

I love the fact that you own bone colector, deja vu, distrubia, I Robot, national treasure, shooter and many others because well from me they all have great repeatability quality. something you can go back to rather than something you can say you have and own in your collection.

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

I agree. I do have a lot of movies that sure aren't the finest films of all time, but they are just simply fun to watch (deja vu, wedding crashers, lucky ones, disturbia, independence day, etc. etc.

Great start its a good collection. One question wasn't it you that called some of the movies you own overrated and bad: (Blood Diamond, Platoon) Just curious if I'm wrong sorry.

Indeed it was. That's what is weird about my collection: I do not necessarily love every movie in it. Blood Diamond was given to me as a gift which I hadn't seen the movie before and didn't really like it too much (it DOES need a rewatch though). Platoon I bought in advance of ever seeing it before ($5) and just wasn't totally impressed.

5 spots left on my tower (till I get another one)

Thinking of what movies to fill it with (North by Northwest seems like a good choice)

Do you have a list of films that you really want to buy ?

rauldc14 03-09-10 04:22 AM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

I don't know there are a few I've been looking towards getting (North by Northwest, Dial M for Murder). I'm thinking about the Hitchcock box set but I might just want the movies individually.

I was also thinking that I need to add The Hangover at some point in time as well.

I could always go the route of buying random movies with good reputations that I haven't seen before and see how that works out as well.

Who knows, I'm confused with what to do hah.

Any suggestions based off of what I have? (Yes I need some more classics as well)

L .B . Jeffries 03-09-10 05:02 AM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Well you've got Mann's Heat and Collateral you should check out Manhunter espically because you’ve also got Silence of the Lambs which it parallels to some degree. Another serial killer movie you own
is David Fincher's Se7en have you seen Fight Club or Zodiac.

Maybe pick up something by Kubrick Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orangeand The Shining.

How about the New Star Trek film

Big blockbuster fun i'd go with The Day After Tomorrow, The Fugitive, The Great Escape, The Guns of Navarone, The Hunt for Red October, The Poseidon Adventure.

Traffic - If you liked this film then there's little you wont like about other Soderbergh films. Maybe go with Out of Sight or The Limey its extremely experimental.

Troy - Not sure if your into war films or not but the same director who did Troy made an amazing Submarine film called Das Boot. Its foreign so if subtitle are an issue it will be an issue

Denzel Washington Training Day, The Siege, Courage Under Fire, Devil in the Blue Dress, Crimson Tide, Glory, Philadelphia and The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three are all worthy Denzel Washington DVDs to own.

Some off the cuff recommendations

Bullitt
Escape From New York
Koyaanisqatsi
Lord of War
Open Range
Once Upon a time in the West
The Right Stuff
Stripes
John Carpenter’s The Thing
Three Kings
Tremors
What’s Up Doc
The Warriors

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

I've written a few of the movies that sound pretty good down. I wasn't a big fan of Traffic (bought it initally without seeing it) so I probably won't like any other Soderbergh stuff I'm guessing.

At some point i've definitely got to add Glory, Malcolm X, and Training Day

I haven't seen Once Upon a Time in the West and Das Boot, but I've heard good things. The Shining sounds like a good add but haven't seen it as well. I've seen Zodiac, Fight Club, Crimson Tide, and Courage Under Fire but don't know if I want any of them

Holden Pike 03-09-10 06:17 PM

Since you're obviously a big Rachel McAdams fan I suppose you just plain haven't gotten around to Mean Girls or The Notebook, but one that may have gotten by you completely is the Canadian TV series "Slings & Arrows", where she co-stars in the first season (and appears in the first episode of the second season). Definitely worth tracking down.

And by the by, you'll be interested to know that there is an entire thread devoted to Ms. McAdams, HERE.

I've seen parts of Mean Girls and The Notebook, but as a 22 year old male it may be a bit too much to have in my collection. Slings and Arrows looks great might have to check it out.

Thanks for showing the McAdams thread!

North by Northwest has been added as a "blind buy". Haven't seen it yet but hopefully it will be great. Doubled my movies from the 1950's.

North by Northwest was a fantastic film and a definite classic.

I've also now added (or given to me I should say) The Blind Side

rauldc14 06-20-10 01:16 AM

I'd recommend The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I'd recommend both... They are both one of the best westerns out there, you wont regret it.

Brodinski 06-20-10 09:16 AM

You should enjoy The Blind Side. It was nothing fantastic, but it was a good story. I enjoyed it because it was about a Ravens player.

I don't know how rauldc14 will feel about it, but I found that movie quite disappointing.

Of course you did, look at the title. It's a rubbish title, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a rubbish film. I've certainly had no desire to see it, simply because of the title.

Me too... I had high hopes on it based on the trailer..
But Ryan Gosling did a good job.. I really liked him in Stay.

Some like it Hot has been rising higher and higher on my list of favorites. You really just got to love that movie.

rauldc14 04-22-11 12:58 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Two new additions, the price was just too good: Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Pale Rider

rauldc14 05-01-11 04:42 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

And once again, 3 more: The Ring, Dr. No, and Goldfinger. Goldfinger ruled so much when I saw it 2 weeks ago I figured hey why not get it. And The Ring is one of my favorite horrors of all time.

The Japanese version or The one with Naomi Watts?? I love both of them :)

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

The Naomi Watts one. Though I do like the Japanese version as well.

Unstoppable
Hangover 2

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Two more buys, both blind:

Midnight in Paris (come on, I mean really did you think I wouldn't buy a film with Rachel McAdams in it?)

and

Ben-Hur (random find for $5. Not sure if I will like it or not, but it's fairly highly acclaimed. I just don't hear anybody saying they love it, though.)

rauldc14 01-01-12 12:09 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Just watched Midnight in Paris. Love the visuals and it does indeed make you fall for Paris as a city. The acting was really solid I thought from Wilson and McAdams. But I really think it would have been better without Cotilliard, who made a solid movie just average in my opinion. I don't know what it was about her performance, but it seemed too fake to me. Still a good movie, but had potential to be even better.

rauldc14 01-14-12 03:15 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

2 more DVD's:

10 Greatest Games- Green Bay Packers DVD Set

and

Jeff Dunham Controlled Chaos

rauldc14 03-09-12 05:09 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

3 buys today:
-The Bridge on the River Kwai
-Mulholland Drive (blind buy)
-Up in the Air (blind buy)

anyone seen the last 2?

honeykid 03-10-12 03:13 AM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Almost everyone seems to love Up In The Air. I liked it, but thought it overrated and completely depended on Clooney being just so damn likeable. Which he is. He carries the film completely, IMO. The only other thing that raised the film beyond the ordinary was the chemistry of Clooney and Farmiga.

Nausicaä 03-10-12 06:32 AM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

Up In The Air is a fine film, Farmiga helps though, wonderful actress.

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

once again I'm taking recommendations for blind films to buy and also for films to watch...any suggestions?

Nausicaä 03-12-12 08:17 AM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

If you like Vera Farmiga, try:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

From the director of Winter's Bone.

I've yet to see it but Vera Farmiga has directed her first film:

Added to my Bond collection with Thunderball.

Also bought Notorious (1946) to add on to my Hitch collection.

I don't get why it's so hard to find Vertigo, though.

Added to my Bond collection with Thunderball.
I'm waiting for the new Bond collection to be released later in the year, every Bond film on blu-ray, except Sky Fall obviously. I only have Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace on DVD, so will be a nice collection - even if it has Die Another Day in...

Forgot to say that I added Thor as well.

rauldc14 06-29-12 07:47 PM

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

I added Lord of the Rings: Return of the King mainly because it was $3. Secondly it is a stunning film visually and it deserves a rewatch.

I honestly cannot comprehend purchasing a DVD of a new flick without special features. Thats what torrents are for.

Re: rauldc14's DVD Collection

I haven't bought a DVD in forever, aside from LOTR. Looking for suggestions once again please.

honeykid 07-06-12 07:33 PM

Finding Forrester
Mean Streets
Zodiac
21 Grams
Rocky
Zelig
Romancing The Stone
Wag The Dog
State Of Play (TV series)
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (film and/or tv series)
Barton Fink
Jacob's Ladder
The Big Lebowski
The Iron Giant
To Live And Die In L.A.
All About Eve
Harvey/Anatomy of a Murder/Rope
Manhatten Murder Mystery/Manhatten/Annie Hall/Everyone Say I Love You

Or, of course, you could just take a look at any of the films on my 100 list that you've yet to see.

Have a look at page 16 of my reviews thread matey. There's a list of all the films I've done so far, plus two or three more reviews after that post... there might be something there you'd like.

I will say honeykid has a couple of decent ones in the above list. Zodiac and The Big Lebowski especially.

Well since I am getting married next year, I decided to add my fiancee's DVD to the main page as well. If anybody sees any good ones in that section let me know, though it looks somewhat rough lol.

There are some scoffy films in there. But I agree with the ones you stated above, as well as Howl's Moving Castle, possibly Avatar and Incredibles (haven't seen either), Sound of Music (it's pretty good, just long) and Polar Express. It just got to the point where I had to "merge" the collection. And in all fairness we've bought a lot of films together that I have just added into my pile.

Also went to Barnes for the 50% criterion collection sale. I wussed out and only bought Stagecoach, and then bought a Streetcar Named Desire. Looked like some good deals, just didn't know what ones to get. Any suggestions on some good criterions and maybe I'll make a return trip.
