Banned Members

http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/r...ags/banned.gif
I was thinking that this could be the official thread were moderators write down the members they have just banned and why.

I think a thread like this should be around because when ever i'm browsing through the site and i see the BANNED thing in the person's username i wonder when the hell the certian member got banned and what he/she did.

For example i had no idea Verticall Gunn was banned until just before.

Yeah, I've seen that done before (namely because about six years ago I ended up in a banned members thread for a different forum), although it does seem somewhat immature to point out banned people to the others, almost like public shaming and that's just ridiculous.

Plus, in my experience a large cross-section of the members who get banned on here are simply studio plants or spammers for other sites, and it's not really worth wasting time explaining why they were banned (the small post-counts give it away, I think).

I mean like legit members. And it isn't public shaming, its just informing the other members of who has been banned.

I'll admit I have been thinking of this idea as well, but yeah, in the end it'll be up to the mods/admins to decide whether or not to go with it.

Im split on the idea TBH I have also see members with BANNED under thier name and I admit I have been intriged to see why they were banned but naming and shaming is it a good idea I dont know.

I like the idea and i think most plants have 'BANNED- PLANT' anyway. Everyone likes a bit of goss :)

Re: Banned Members

Well isn't it public anyway?
I thought people get banned for something they post - like pornographic pictures and such. Of course these posts get deleted but if the banned people decided to post them for everyone to see, why shouldn't people know they did it?

Neither did I, why was he/she banned? Yup I think this is a good idea.

Like a banned hall of fame?
Rogues gallery?
FBI's most wanted?
Sure.
I'd read that thread.

Vertical Gunn's situation was posted here and there on the board. He did quite a few things wrong, but the one he was warned on, which was also on the board, was his multiple accounts. He then had his "brother" join. No one much believed him. I remembered the "Grill a mofo" thread, checked to see if anyone had asked him if he had siblings, and what do you know, I did. He had answered no.

Read the first page here, and here, for more info.

As far as a thread about them goes, something like this is totally up to Yoda. My opinion, it's usually pretty obvious. It will say (Banned, Plant), or as Special K mentioned, it's obvious because they will have tiny, lame posts, or they posted something dirty. Ten posts = being able to post a link.

I guess if a long time member was banned (This rarely ever happens), everyone would want to know why, but I feel sure everyone would be told about it.

Re: Banned Members

I don't mind people knowing, but it would add a bit of work to the process to have to remember to post things here, and as Iro says, the overwhelming majority of bannings are ho-hum and completely uninteresting, and not likely to pique anyone's curiousity.

How 'bout this: if you see someone who's been banned, and you want to know why, just ask in this thread. :) Or, if you don't like the idea of a public "shaming," PM one of us. It's rare enough that I think one of the two is probably the way to go.

Re: Banned Members

Yeah, I usually just PM Yoda asking why they were banned.

P.S., what finally threw you over the edge in banning VG?

Re: Banned Members

Des' summary explains most of it; after being warned approximately 1.8 gazillion times, he registered another account (his "brother") even though he'd previously said he had no siblings. We'd given the guy a bunch of chances and he just kept doing it. Hate to ban someone for something like that, given that he wasn't spamming or swearing or harassing anyone, but if we don't enforce the rule after someone breaks it several times, well, heck, we'd have to get rid of it altogether.

Re: Banned Members

I've seen this done on another site and it was ultimately useful in a couple of ways.

It meant mods didn't have to repeatedly explain why someone was banned in multiple PMs.
It showed that the same parameters were set for everyone and the level of tolerance of the moderation team.
It was a nice illustration of just how much work it can be to moderate a forum.
It prevented uninformed speculation from snowballing into misplaced bad feeling toward the moderation team.

It feels a maybe a little like hanging out dirty laundry, but as with laundry, sunlight literally does kill bacteria and make your clothes smell better. ;)

Re: Banned Members

Im just confussed as to why someone would make multiple accounts? Its very odd, was it to bump his rep up or something?

Re: Banned Members

I had no idea he was banned either.

Re: Banned Members

From what I read he had like 8 account's I mean WTF is that about?

Ive changed my mind I really wana know who these banned people are and wanna know why they are banned. :yup:

Good idea

Re: Banned Members

Well if somebody registers just to post some spam and leave, will you want to know about that? More than likely, you won't even notice. A point Yoda touched on above.

Either way, I'm not biased. :D

Re: Banned Members

TUS is banned?

n3wt 03-07-09 09:02 PM

Re: Banned Members

I think if someone joins the site and post's one piece of spam there is no need for them to be posted here but I mean if someone breaks the rules or has been here for awhile and they get banned then im sure people will want to know what they did.
