A Song For July

Same as was done in April and last year.....
  • Join in and drop out as you please
  • No set number of nominations, nominate on the fly
  • Max song duration: 10 minutes
  • No individual matches means no random or host 'fixing' the matches
  • Only one nomination per person per 'round'
  • Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish

Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.

Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).

The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.

Songs that made it to previous 'finals' are ineligible -
list here

Simples but if any relevant questions just ask.

Welcome in HollowMan,

External linking is easy:
  1. Copy the url of the song link you want (it has to be a free to access link - most of the time we tend to use YouTube)
  2. Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. "The Beatles - In My Life"
  3. Highlight the text
  4. In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. are) click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
  5. In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier
  6. Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
  7. Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it

You can verify it looks right and even that they work by previewing the post.

For example here's the one for The Beatles - In My Life

Thanks, however I don't see the symbol of the globe with chain underneath. The only symbols I have are smiley face, bold, italic, a person, warning, speech marks and the picture one. I'm using a tablet if that makes any difference.

Ah, I'm on a Mac and get this:

Do you get a "Go Advanced" button like the one you can see at the bottom of my screenshot? Perhaps the globe with chain underneath might be in there for you?

If not perhaps someone else that uses a tablet might be able to assist?

No advanced button unfortunately. I guess I'll just put the YouTube link in as it is.

No worries - I'll message Yoda about this when he's back fit and able but for the time being just drop the ordinary video link for each round you want to play into this thread and I'll format the links for you when I'm collating the songs for the rounds.

cat_sidhe 07-01-20 04:02 PM

As far as I remember, it was always impossible to do the "m." thing on mobile. Even writing it correctly would bring up the entire youtube clip. It's a desktop thing only.

Edit: I see you're on a mac. Ops, no experience with those...

@Captain Spaulding @John-Connor @gbgoodies @jiraffejustin @Sedai @resopamenic @Derek Vinyard @HollowMan @cat_sidhe @CaptainT @honeykid we've started ;)

Captain Spaulding 07-02-20 02:23 PM

Round 1

1. Cody Jinks - Watch the World Die
(Apocalyptic country. Timely lyrics.)

2. George Jones - The King is Gone
(No song with "Yabba Dabba Doo" in its chorus should be this good.)

3. Cerrone - Supernature
(One of the YouTube comments summed it up perfectly: "If disco and porno music had a baby." First-time listen. Great nom.)

4. Rush - Big Money
(Strongly tempted to rank this dead last for that dorky ass music video. Gotta remind myself to judge the song on its own merits.)

5. Saving Escape - Rhyme or Reason
(Comfortable, if perhaps overly familiar sound. I'm always partial to female-fronted rock, and the song builds nicely.)

6. American - Sister Golden Hair
(Beautiful, breezy harmonies. Perfect song to play outside on a warm summer day.)

7. Toothless - Sisyphus
(Pleasant, upbeat, if a tad monotonous.)

8. The Alan Parson Project - Sirius
(I wondered why this sounded so immediately familiar. Thankfully the YouTube comments pointed out the reason: Jordan-era Chicago Bulls introductions. Wish this was 2-3 minutes longer.)

9. The Beatles - In My Life
(Simplistic perfection, but I respect the Beatles more than I enjoy listening to them.)

10. Hell on Wheels - The Soda
(A little too indie-sounding for me, though it did grow on me.)

11. Depeche Mode - Little 15
(Never been a fan of Depeche Mode. Their sound just always bums me out.)

12. Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You
(I love a lot of Journey songs, mostly for Steve Perry's soaring vocal abilities, but this one has never done it for me.)

13. Neil Diamond - Hurricane
(Don't hate it, but it definitely makes me think of elevator music.)

14. No Buses - With or Without You
(Grating.)

Captain Spaulding 07-02-20 02:32 PM

Round 2 nom:
Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue

John-Connor 07-02-20 02:34 PM

  1. The Alan Parsons Project - Sirius
  2. Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You
  3. Cerrone - Supernature
(I hear 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ' in there?)
  4. America - Sister Golden Hair
  5. Rush - Big Money
  6. Neil Diamond - Hurricane
  7. Depeche Mode - Little 15
  8. Toothless - Sisyphus
  9. The Beatles - In My Life
  10. Cody Jinks - Watch the World Die
  11. Saving Escape - Rhyme or Reason
  12. George Jones - The King is Gone

Re: A Song For July

1 Rush - The Big Money - One of the best Rush tunes from the 80's synth era...
2 Cerrone - Supernature - DAT FUNK! Love the trance-y synth lines.
3 Saving Escape - Rhyme or Reason - Kid has some pipes!
4 Alan Parsons Project - Sirius - Classic APP tune...too bad it isn't longer.
5 Beatles-In my Life - Good tune, but not a favorite from the band.
6 Toothless - Sisyphus - Good energy.
7 Cody Jinks - Watch The World Die - A country song I actually like!
8 America - Sister Golden Hair - Fairly good classic rock, but doesn't do much for me.
9 Depeche Mode - Little 15 - I like quite of bit of DM music. But not this one.
10 Journey - I'll Be Alright Without You - One of the few duds from this band that is somehow still popular.
11 Hell On Wheels - The Soda - Got better as it went along, but a bit too stripped down for my taste.
12 No Buses - With or Without It - What did I just watch?
13 Neil Diamond - Hurricane - One of the few Diamond tracks I just don't dig.
14 George Jones-The King Is Gone - Nope!

No contest. This has been a fav of mine since I was a kid, complete with its freaky album cover and music video

2. The Alan Parsons Project - Sirius
Love me some APP. Sirius is a classic.

3.The Beatles - In My Life
Great song. Kind of sad, though. Like the kind of song you play at someone's funeral.

4. Toothless - Sisyphus

5. Hell on Wheels - The Soda
Sweden's Violent Femmes, I guess. The first band my boyfriend ever worked for.
Kind of heartbreaking lyrics though.

And I will take that dollar bill
And I will drink so much
That it could kill me
Because it's sin
Because it's my nature

Then we bounce into the water
And we bounce into the soda
And we bounce into the whiskey
And we bounce...

Round 2

1. Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue
(I've listened to this album a ton ever since watching the excellent documentary Searching for Sugar Man a few weeks back. Incredible story of a transcendent talent who was completely ignored in his own country but unbeknownst to him was a revolutionary artist half the world away.)

2. Prince - Purple Rain
(One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists from one of my favorite albums. Might dock it a few points for being such an OBVIOUS song, depending on how the rest of this set shakes out, but in reality this would be my #1.)

3. Luke Bell - The Bullfighter
(Sounds like he was transplanted from a 1950's roadside honky-tonk bar.)

4. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
(I dig its murkiness and low-driving energy. The tunnel imagery in the video fits the sound quite well.)

5. Vintersea - Illuminated
(Tough one to rank. Wasn't really feeling it early on and its length was a turn-off, but I was pleasantly caught off guard when the demon vocals materialized after the solo. Even though I don't love the song as a whole, I loved enough little moments throughout it that I'd be down to sample a few more songs from this band.)

6. Nadine Shah - Fool
(Original link was unavailable, so I went with this alternative.)

7. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong
(I wish I liked The Pretenders more than I do. As with most of their stuff, this falls under the less-than-enthusiastic "alright" category.)

8. Apocalyptica ft. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough
(I don't think the vocals mesh too well with the gothic styling, but I can rock this no problem.)

9. FINNEAS - I Lost a Friend
(Not my thing, but listenable.)

10. The Very Unknown Band - The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet
(Just because it's mysterious doesn't make it good.)

11. Trace Adkins - The Rest of Mine
(At least it's not "Honkytonk Badonkadonk.")

12. Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease
(Sounds like they're mangling their own instruments beyond recognition.)

R2
  1. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong
  2. Nadine Shah - Fool
  3. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain
  4. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
  5. Luke Bell - The Bullfighter
  6. Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue
  7. Apocalyptica ft. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough
  8. Vintersea - Illuminated
  9. Trace Adkins - The Rest Of Mine
  10. Finneas - I Lost A Friend
  11. The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet - The Very Unknown Band
  12. Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease

R3:
Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover

Captain Spaulding 07-04-20 07:33 PM

Round 3 nomination:
Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise

jiraffejustin 07-04-20 10:09 PM

1. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain
- Prince is undeniable. "Purple Rain" is undeniable. If you are ever sad, about anything, just turn on "Purple Rain" and yell the chorus even if the rest of the song doesn't have anything to do with your problems.

2. Morbid Angel - Angel of Disease
- When the good captain said these dudes sound like they are mangling their own instruments beyond recognition, something I do probably too often fyi, he wasn't kidding. I think it sounds dope. It's very aggressive and just feels good, like a warm gun.

3. Luke Bell - The Bullfighter
- It's refreshing to hear newer music that sounds like it's from another time without losing any authenticity.

4. Rodriquez - Hate Street Dialogue
- Not having seen the Sugar Man doc or having listened to any of his music before, I don't know exactly what I expected. Maybe a folksier tune, but I'm really digging this song.

5. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
- I like that they are doing a Joy Division thing.

6. Trace Adkins - The Rest Of Mine
- Right in the middle for me. Bonus points for being country, but it's pretty sanitized stuff. Not bad, never will be a favorite.

7. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong
- I am mostly neutral on this track. It's not good or bad. By the middle of it, I kinda zoned out. By the end of it, I kinda remembered what I was supposed to be doing, and I didn't hate it.

8. The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet - The Very Unknown Band

9. Vintersea - Illuminated
- I don't hate it or anything, but I am not moved by it in the slightest. I don't know what to make of this kind of music. And this song is pretty long, and I'm still not too keen on the growly, screamy stuff, at least in this context.

10. Nadine Shah - Fool
- Maybe I'm just in a sour mood, but this was pretty grating.

11. Apocalyptica feat. Brent Smith - Not Strong Enough
- I am getting Chris Gaines vibes the dudes, but I probably shouldn't judge the song on that. It's not really my thing.

12. FINNEAS - I Lost A Friend
- I was out as soon as he said he lost a friend like keys in the sofa.

1. Nadine Shah - Fool
I'm LOVE this woman! Discovered her through a Ghostpoet song where she did backing vocals and loocked her up. I adoooore her!! <3

2. Raskolnikov - Hunde sind an der Leine zu führen
Never heard this before and I instantly liked it. I'll actually put this on my playlist comprosed of things I discover through movies, pubs, incidental circumstances.

3. Vintersea - Illuminated
Liked this quite a lot. I like a chick who can both sing and growl, and it wasn't cheesy. Another one for my playlist!

4. Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue

5. The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong

Holiday weekend! Sorry I missed the round. Back for R4...

Round 4 Nom

In Flames - Fear is the Weakness

Captain Spaulding 07-06-20 01:13 PM

Round 3

1. Colter Wall - Caroline
(Brock Lesnar of all people brought Colter Wall to my attention. A sound as sparse as the open plains. Unfathomable to me that he was 20-years-old at the time of this recording. He sounds more like an ancient, weathered horseman returning home from decades of toil and trouble.)

2. Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring the Noise
(This is my "Walk This Way" barrier-breaker/genre cross-over. TURN IT UP!)

3. Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
(If all goes as planned, I'll be taking my first mushroom trip in a few weeks. Part of me would love to play this while tripping, as it's got that meditative/third-eye quality, but I worry that its sinister undertone might unnerve me too much.)

4. Naneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
(Charmingly dated and very fun.)

5. Prince - I Wanna Be Your Lover
(Pure sex. It's still strange to me that Prince's music is so easily found on YouTube, when his team used to constantly shut this sh*t down when he was still alive.)

6. Long Night - Barren Land
(Feel like I can hear slight echoes of simplified Tool in there during a few moments, which is a favorable comparison. Lyrics are overly repetitive. Like it, don't love it.)

7. Medicine Boy - Alina
(Didn't grab me on a first listen, and I'm rarely into whispered vocals, but I appreciate its haunting quality.)

8. Brad Paisley - Me Neither
(Still think I prefer him when he's selling insurance with Peyton Manning, but I like Paisley more than many of his mainstream contemporaries, and he's always been skilled with a guitar.)

9. Bring Me the Horizon - Parasite
:affleck:
