Tomato Necromancy

Because I'm looking for an excuse to not have to do any work today.

Images from the old days of RT, for those who remember and those who have forgotten.

Sadly, I don't have anything from RT saved. If we were warned about the site closing down ahead of time though, I probably would've saved some discussions. I do have a decent number of discussions on Corrie saved though.

He briefly came back. Claimed to have reformed himself. Then one day I (mildly, I'm sure ) teased him about some ridiculous thing he posted, he had a complete meltdown, and I don't think he returned after that.

Another poster I miss is max314, who adamantly defended The Matrix and each of their much-hated sequels as if they were the best movies ever made. I'd really like to know his thoughts about the upcoming fourth sequel.

I made this for him because he seemed to show up every time The Matrix came up in a discussion. Thankfully, he loved it:

That's too bad. I'm pretty sure it was BL because the images in my trading card were ones from threads he either made or participated in a lot. Plus, it just sounded like him.

As for Red, what an infuriating fellow. I regret pretty much every interaction I had with him or argument of his that I read because it was like being in quicksand: the longer I stuck around, the angrier I got and the harder it was to escape.

The one quote that stuck with me was when I said that Snyder's approach was not what I wanted from Superhero movies, to which Red replied that my "deficiencies as a movie watcher were not Snyder's concern". Fair point.

Ugh, that reminds me of the "the leads are weak? You're weak" line from Glengarry Glen Ross. I'll forever picture Red as Alec Baldwin from that movie, but he's wearing Superman pajamas.

John Dumbear 11-17-21 03:03 PM

There was a thread where posters were assigned a superhero. Red stated, "I'm King Kong". I chimed in saying, "I can see that. Big and strong, not too bright and can't get laid".

He never liked me after that.

Jinnistan 11-17-21 03:41 PM

3 pages in and I still don't know who "phone" was.

I don't think Heino was BL, because I once got in a heady debate with BL over the Kennedy assassination, where he was going very hard in the paint for the then-recent Bugliosi book. Heino appeared to side with the cover-up narrative, citing my points about Jack Ruby. BL claimed to have been so disappointed with Heino for what he considered this lapse of reason. I'm not sure if BL was schizo enough to have done this as a ruse.

Also, I remember Gorb claiming to have met Heino at some point irl, saying that he wasn't an alias of another poster, but someone who was very bright and a "true artist". Or maybe that means that Heino was a Gorb alias. I don't know. I'm not a net shrink.

I assumed Heino was just a guy doing a shtick. I'm pretty sure I saw him interact with BL plenty of times, and like JJ says, both seemed too well adjusted to pull that off.

(I will say that BL was one of those posters, like Izzy Black and Ergill, whose presence I enjoyed immensely in discussions but, despite them not being condescending or anything, I would hesitate to engage with at length. This was definitely insecurity on my part, but it felt like I was pulling up a little toddler-sized chair to the grownups table anytime I tried to get into a discussion.)

If you want real alias weirdness, did any of you ever stumble into that Dollywood thread in one of the subforums? It was one poster running a few dozen aliases having one long cryptic conversation between them. Creepy ****.

If it makes you feel better, Red disliked anybody who disagreed with him about any movie ever. He did have moments where he could nicely articulate the virtues of things he liked, but his awful personality made those moments short-lived.

I think RT collapsed before the whole toxic fandom discourse started, but exhibit A would be Red. I can only hope he chilled out a little after the forums died.

I was fascinated enough to try to read the whole thread, but never finished it. True rabbit hole. Every once in a while, he would start the whole thing over again with slight variations. In short, it was something about David Lynch doing a version of Wizard of Oz, with a mix of poetry (some of it not too bad) and extended dialogues between his various characters. Whenever someone would stumble in and say something, complimentary or not, he would pull out his Hannibal Lector persona and chase them off. Then it was back to the serenity of surrealism.

Interesting, BL may have only been Evil Heino then because that's who posted the remaining trading cards at Corrie. Or, maybe he knows Heino/Evil Heino personally and he did him that favor? Either way, his unexplained return was like a warm hug...followed by a stab in the back.

In short, he had multiple incidents of unprovoked harassment towards several users throughout the time I knew him, especially Jinnistan. He also made multiple attack threads on various people. Yoda wouldn't put up with him for long on this server.

lovesexy was a poster who was clearly not well. He claimed he was manic depressive, but he was also an *******. He was frequently a nightmare who derailed threads because he was angry people weren't talking about the movies he wanted to talk about. Even though he never actually had anything to say about the movies he wanted to talk about except for the fact that he had heard of them and had watched them and wanted everyone to know he'd seen them. He was deeply insufferable. So of course I kind of liked him. At least, until I didn't. As much as I could identify with a lot of his issues, there always comes a point where no matter how much you can empathize, you just run out of patience.

If I remember correctly, he very briefly joined the corrie. But no more than for a couple of weeks, if not days, and was never heard from again.

Reminds me of a fellow we had here named Zotis. He even made a thread attacking Yoda. Then he got banned. So when I makes jokes about people “going fully Zotis, you never go full Zotis!”, that is who I’m referencing.

Edit: there was actually more to it iirc.

If I remember correctly, there were a few times when he seemingly bragged about deliberately going off his meds. I'm perhaps being a bit insensitive here, but it made it hard to sympathize with him, especially given his other behaviour. I probably got along with him as well as one could (or at the very least wasn't one of his usual targets), but did find myself bracing myself for known trigger points (i.e. bring up Brian De Palma and expect a pages long rant, with the films he claimed to not take issue with changing during every iteration of said rant) and trying to post around it.

I have a friend who has to take anti-psychotic medication, and because of its effects on him, I can get why someone would stop taking it. But the problem with lovesexy wasn't that he was mentally ill, it was that he was also a prick. To a lot of people. lYes, part of this was almost certainly due to his other problems. But part of it was also because he was an *******.

I hope he figured things out for himself. I hope he hasn't met the kind of fate I imagine for him. And I did sort of like him, legitimately. He introduced me to Ogroff after all. This is an important thing to do for someone like me.

But he was still an *******.

Does anyone remember the thread "Eat it or wear it?"

It was a game where you're presented with a series of situations, and presented with the titular decision at each turn. I remember getting a good amount of laughs out of it, but don't remember if it was something I participated in or stumbled across when I was looking for an old thread.

Hoping somebody else remembers this.

Given how abruptly he stopped posting, I kind of assumed he'd passed away.

Wonder if that one poster ever made it to third base with his sister. Name escapes me but he had an unnatural attraction to Jennifer Love Hewett. Also remember him blowing up on the board and never heard from again.

Remember Archimmes? Wasn't it revealed that he was purposely flying to Thailand or some such place for the purpose of having sex with underage prostitutes?

This. (Sorry, couldn't resist).

He went from a poster who I was always excited to read to one I wanted to punch in the face. Besides "this," almost all of his posts were "good thread" (ironically), "this thread has a point," "there's already a thread about that on the front page, etc." I don't think he left because he died, but because he probably couldn't take the frustration any more.

Oh yes, I remember. I stopped reading after someone ate the trenchcoat because I couldn't imagine it getting better than that. I guess I should have continued.

My last interaction with him was on the night of the Maple Leafs historic playoff meltdown against the Boston Bruins (and I believe he was from Boston). It was such a sporting embarassment even he offered me some condolences. Then he disappeared, and because I couldn't imagine not at least taking a few pot shots at my crappy team once my wounds healed, I just assumed he must have died. Like everyone else who has suddenly stopped responding to my posts has surely done over the years :shifty:

Not that I think there's any foul play, but Torgo is looking increasingly suspicious.

Also, Dreiser could be a dick, but I found his brand of dickishness to not be particularly antagonistic. He was also fairly supportive of my awkard attempts at film discussion, and could be nudged into making decent contributions often enough. I liked him. He was like a cranky uncle.

Torgo 11-18-21 05:51 PM

Will I ever be able to join a discussion without being accused of murder? :D

But yeah, before dreiser's crankiness got the better of him, his love of TV and film - David Lynch and redheads in particular - made the forum a lot more enjoyable.

Ah yes, let us not forget his endless rotation of sexy avatars.

Speaking of old RTers, just noticed that Lily Von's birthday was just posted here. So I guess she was on this site for a time too.

Rockatansky 11-20-21 01:43 PM

Didn't she leave in an extremely lame flame out?

Can't remember exactly what happened, and maybe I'm confusing her with a different poster, but I remember something about 'no fatties in Auschwitz' being the end of her. Not that she wasn't always a phony, insensitive dunderhead. But something about her last few gasps at RT did seem fittingly lame for a poster whose popularity up until then always baffled me.

Ah, it's coming back to me. If I remember correctly, she had a habit of saying extremely dumb or racist things because she saw them "in a doco". I think the claim you cite was one of the most egregious and resulted in an escalation of calling her out, and then she left in a flameout where she tried to post porn but messed up the image links.

Hopefully somebody else can corroborate this.

John Dumbear 11-20-21 03:06 PM

Lilly started to get bitter when her beau at the time, Paradyne was run out/bailed out. Always found her amusing, her slutty antics et al.

This was about the same time as "Astor"-gate. When astor bolted and founded her own forum, Icine. Also, taking many a good poster with her.

What pisses me off is that I had a few dozen threads bookmarked from the old site but they just wiped everything out. I could understand not letting people post, but it really infuriated me that they just wiped out years worth of posting.

I've tried the Internet Wayback Machine but most of the links on there are broken.

I vaguely recall her leaving over the Auschwitz comment but it's been years now.
